To Quit Or Not To Quit That Is The Question!

Hi Everyone,

Just recently I have grappled with the idea of quitting Internet Marketing after having been at it for the better part of 5 year with minimal success. So recently I posted this same title in another forum and asked the following question"

"If you have been in the internet marketing arena for about five years and have yet to experience any real "success" would it be safe to decide that it is time to quit or should you hang in there like a good solder and see it through to the bitter end.

Is 5 years a good time line to start considering other options."

I must say that I was encouraged and inspired by the responses I got from the forum members

So if you would indulge me I would appreciate your thoughts on my question. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated

Thank You

  • It depends what you want out of internet marketing. Obviously its taken a good portion of your life, so the bigger question is what do you want to do with your life?

Does internet marketing lead you there? Is it the best use of your abilities?

I so agree...I bet when you started you never had a 5 year plan.

Because the real problem is you never planned to fail...

      You failed to plan.

Think were you want to be in the next 5 years and set targets to reach there.

Breakdown the time frame into 1 year goals, then monthly, then weekly then finally daily.

So then you will have you 5 year plan broken down into managable daily tasks.

If Internet marketing is in you plan continue, if not quit...it's as simple as that.

if you feel like quitting.. quit.. don't let the "sunk cost" get in a way with your decision.. sometime it is just not working out...

then maybe you can give us some figures.. have you been losing money all along? are you losing money less.. or actually making money now?? how involved is your business? is it not on autopilot? i thought once you have it set up.. it takes little to maintain...

we need more information to provide any meaningful input for your situation

It's not so much about how long you have been trying, but what actions you have actually taken.

The more specific you are about the things you are doing will help get you receive better guidance for a serious decision.

Buddy, only one person on this earth can really answer that question, and that's you.

The question is, do you have a "WHY"?

If there is a big enough / good enough reason to persist, then don't ever quit your dreams.

Do you have any goals or dreams? What made you get started in internet marketing in the first place? Does that dream / goal still motivate you today?

If you do have a set of goals, it helps to write them down and keep them right by your computer screen. If you have the motivation, the rest can come via help available right here in this forum.

    All the best.

Yeah, a lot of things to consider especially without knowing what you mean by minimal success. To some that is no money, to others it is a $50K per annum. To me....well...my bar is higher.

In fact some real world business owners would consider it a success to ONLY have a net loss of $10K!

So what you want Vs Return Vs Effort...got to figure all that out.

Now if I were talking to someone who had been working away for 5 years and made no money I'd sum it up this way.

Making money online is not complicated. There is no magic and no secret weapon and the gurus are not telling you lies all the time. So that means you may need to do one of the following:

    - Change your approach (this could include quitting).
    - Stop learning and take action.
    - Keep focused and work the plan - reading another ebook is not the same as Internet marketing, nor is reading you email or browsing this forum. (You need to learn sure but making money is the whole point so do that first.)
    - Be honest with yourself.

If someone made no money working IM for 5 years then something is seriously wrong!

I can see anything up to a year, especially for the part timers, but 5 is a problem.

So the two options are find the problem and fix it or quit. IM is not for everyone. Anyone could do it but most people should never touch it.

Just like running any business. There is a huge difference between being employed and being self-employed - most people seem to have serious problem being their own boss.

    Cheers,

    Jonathan

        Do you really believe that?

What about creating your own "luck"?

mate.. you misunderstood my response... there are other factors involved.. to say it more bluntly.. sometime someone just does not have what it takes... it is cruel... then it may have something to do with luck... it just a string of bad lucks... this guy is not waiting for luck.. it appears he had tried.. it is just not working for him.. that is all

Honestly , just speaking for me , I would have hung it up 4 years ago.

In no way am I trying to sound mean but if you have really been actively marketing for five years with little return, I only see three options .

1: get a mentor that will help you . Listen and take action on whta they tell you to do.

2: Just enjoy it as a hobby .

3: cut your losses and use your pc to play games and such.

    Yes. GIVE UP NOW

Give up what you are not doing right and do the right things.

Jason Moffitt put it clearly in one line. "It's about how many order buttons you have"

The answer to that will reveal tons.

How many products do you have?
How many leads look at your stuff daily?
How many articles, ads, press releases, videos, etc. do you have out there?
How many tests have you made of your sales pages?

It's all about numbers. The more you do the more you'll discover what works and what is BS. Some just take longer and there is nothing wrong with that.

Lee McIntyre went from newbie to guru in less than 2 years. Some have been at this since the internet started and are still not full time. Everyone gets discouraged, everyone has failures. Ask Mike Filsaime or Frank Kern, or anyone else that has "made it" if they have ever fallen flat on their face. The answer would be yes.

It's not how many times you fail it's how many times you get back up.

    Hello,
    DO NOT QUIT!!
    This what I did:
My brother and I are very close,he has been doing his thing with im and me mine,we both have had some medium success.
We finally put our heads together and what we could not do on our own we are doing more together than ever.
Find a partner that may be able to help you with some new ideas or show you what
    you may be doing wrong.

I think you should consider your cost of opportunity. For example I was a VP in a regional bank doing 6 figures a year, and then decided to pursue my passion; however, the first year was a bummer. In other words I had a 6 figures negative year because I could have stayed at that job or anything similar and maintain my income. However, my health improved notoriously last year for the lack of stress. So in my prospective 2009 was a great year. I guess my questions to you are what do you value the most in your life, and what do you want to do with your life?

I think so many people fail because they pick the most profitable niche (potentially profitable that is) and think they can throw up some junk website and backlink the hell out of it and google will index it, rank it, and eventually you will become rich. There is a reason that big name brand companies rank so well. They provide a value and a reason for visitors to come to there site. That doesn't mean that idividuals can't do this, it just means that a site has to hold value. If you have the energy and drive to learn a niche, become an expert and build a valuable site that would help customers then stick with it. If you think internet marketing is just throwing up a shallow site and getting rich, then you might as well get out and save yourself the headaches. Backlinking is an important part to ranking, but building a quality site that helps the reader is equally important. I'm not saying that a lot of people haven't made a lot of money off small, next to worthless sites, but it isn't the way to go in the long run. It deffinately isn't internet marketing. If you have spent 5 years and haven't had success, then you probably haven't built any sites that are filled with rich, quality content for the readers. In the end you have to go with your own heart and do what you think is best. If you decide to stick with it, then build a quality site and put together something that really helps the reader and eventually you will have customers and success!

    Good Luck!!

Why is it everyone that thinks about quitting comes on here and wants an opinion about whether they should quit or not? Is it that hard of a decision? If you have been doing this for five years and have had little success then obviously you are doing something wrong. If you can't figure it out, then you should get some help. If you just don't want to do it anymore then QUIT.

Geez! Can't you make your own decision about your own life? Why should you let someone else tell you what to do?! If you are really coming on here to get advice, then be honest and get help! I am so sick of seeing these "Should I quit" threads! If you are thinking about it then just do it!

Sounds like this has been a hobby for you and not a real business.

If it were a serious thought to you and a business, you would have a business plan, and some goals for the year.

You don't wait 5 years to figure out it's not working - or that your plan isn't working.

Forget that what you are doing is online, because that has nothing to do with anything.

IM is marketing your product or services on the internet. What are you trying to sell exactly?

The op isn't wanting to quit . They are wanting people to encourage them.

Notice ... the only thanked post are the Come on ... you can do it post .

If I ever decide to quit ... I won't have to ask anybody ... I will just disappear.

Yeah I agree Troy. That's why I said in my original post that if they were coming here to get help to just ask instead of whine and cry and ask someone if they should quit or not.

    Hi Prime777 -
Unfortunately, there are literally thousands of people in your situation. They struggle for many months or years without much to show for their efforts and money spent. That's sad.

Bottom line is this: Most marketers usally never find the right mentors. Most of the real marketers are "underground" and they seldom reveal their methods. Most of the celebrity Internet Marketing so-called coaches sell over-priced courses which give very little results. Some may argue with this - but we all know people who struggle even after they try to implement their ingenious methods. It usually doesn't work as well as promised.

Many marketers go broke buying all these expensive ebooks and courses. Stop the Insanity!

A good portion of the marketers who are getting rich are those selling the Internet Marketing courses.

I say quit for now and do something else for a while! It might be that you need to take a break from all this.

Is it that you have been following too many people and buying courses and ideas that every body keeps pushing?

This could make us spend too much money and confuse and freeze us from taking action!

I say quit. Save some money then come back strong, (angry - in a good way) and motivated and create your success!!

    Hi,

I have a very great job back to 2 years ago. But when I found out about IM, Wow... I think it's so cool and I believe IM is a lot better. So, with confidence... I quit my job and spend almost all my time on IM. Reading what people do and doing research.

In 6 months, I earn no more than half my previous job income in 1 week. It's so frustating and I almost quit several times. My financial keeps getting worse and worse.. but I can survive because of I still have faith... I will success someday...

I found out what's my fault: To many idea... this kill my previous idea.
When found more promising idea, naturaly people will change...
This is no good because 'nothing is best'. 'There is always a better thing than the best thing'.
If you always catch at the best, you'll never find anything and you will end in the loop forever.

Now I've been in IM almost 2 years... My income already pass my previous job income

the key is: 'stick to your idea'... and of course.. 'hard work'

so, the answer is ... 'Not To Quit'

    all the best,
    ayaw
