Product Launch Bandwidth Question

Hi everyone on the Warrior forum. This is a question for the more advanced marketers on here...

When launching a new product of your own, how do you estimate how much server bandwidth you will need to prevent being billed excessively for over -usage?

This is kind of like going blind. I know you do get hosts that scale the bandwidth as needed but the one i use has to be pre set when you order the package.

How much bandwidth have YOU used in a week after a successful product launch?

    All of my launches occur on my dedicated sever, never had it overloaded and costs are always what is expected. Currently running all my products on the same server - still never an issue.

    That said, my launch and your launch would be two totally different things

    Chris,

    Stevetp is trying to tell you it may not apply in your case. They can't scale the bandwidth as needed. If they go way over, it costs more, etc... If they go under, how can they switch mid cycle? Amazon and Google offload some tasks, and have the routers select the most available system, but that costs money. They can STILL exceed capacity too.

    If you have a dedicated server, only a few referrers, no special ads, and your items are physical, or small, you will probably be fine. If you get a shared server, all bets are off. If the items are large digital packages and/or you have LOTS of referrers, etc... then WHO KNOWS?

    If you are encountering problems then try to split the content (especially if its video based) on another site somewhere leaving your sales site up and running off the original server.

    I think you would be looking at a serious amount of traffic to cause issues with the more well known hosts.

    my sales video was about 35mb and in total our launch week used about 2TB on the CDN

    used simplecdn for it all

    its just plain stupid to host the video on your server.
    one of our friends did that and his server company didnt tell him and just got him to upgrade to an $800 a month dedicated just because he didnt use a CDN

    You see what I mean? An old style HTML site, which is similar to many today, could EASILY handle 1000 hits with only 35MB allowed bandwidth. To do what Greg Jacobs spoke about would require OVER 35GB(1000 times as much) assuming they all left the video running, for the SAME number of hits!

    Most DEDICATED sites say they let you have about 2TB. So OLD HTML is OVER 57MILLION hits. Greg Jacobs site would be UNDER 57THOUSAND. ALSO, they can charge a LOT for excess bandwidth. ALSO, what of actual line speed and cpu horsepower?

    BTW, do NOT believe a shared account will be cheaper and work. They will NOT like all the complaints, and would rather just shut down your one site.

    Details mean a LOT!

    The only detail needed to know is if you are doing a big product launch, get a CDN for your video. Its not just about total bandwidth consumption for the month, but when George Brown emails to his list and you get a gobsmack visitors to your site at once all loading your video at the same time
    That is exactly the time you dont want to go down
    (do you really want your HTML payment button not working because of video loading down your server?)
