Default How do you use Google Trends?

In a lot of literature about niche hunting, Google Trends is mentioned as a means to finding some ideas. Of the few dozen or so times I've checked it out over the last few months, I've never been hit with anything that I thought I could use.

For example, just now, I pulled these searches:

1. joe stack
2. joseph andrew stack
3. plane crash austin
4. fort jackson
5. denmark women s curling team
6. brian grant
7. zebra atlanta
8. benny hinn divorce
9. charles shaughnessy
10. stacy the bartender

Usually, everything is so topical for a very short amount of time, I can't think of any particular good use, either for a new niche area or use within a niche I'm currently pursuing.

What say you? How have you used it?

I feel the same way you do. I have found a couple of things and set up a blog on them, but never made much. I have never been able to find anything every day that I could set up a blog on and since the topics don't last very long you would need to find a couple of topics a day I think.

There are some people that have made a little money with Google Trends, so they must really know how to pick a topic that will last a little longer than the ones I tried.

I have never used Google Trends but people do claim to make money with it.

With google adding more emphasis to localized search and me wanting my sites to rank well in the target area, I use google trends to see where in the world the keyword I intend to build a site around is searched for the most...

My hosting provider has servers located in various parts of the world so using the information I gain from google trends I upload my site to the server location where the keyword is searched for the most.

Dhira,

Ok, but I guess I'm trying to illustrate with my example list of how "finicky" the topics are and difficult (for me) to wrap into an article for either a new niche or into any of the niches I'm currently pursuing.

You will rarely find long term niches with Google Trends.

What you want to look for are trends that are very hot relating to things
like entertainment.

I started a thread about this a long time ago that you can find in the
archives somewhere, but the basic steps are as follows:

1. Find a trend.
2. Put up a quick Blogspot blog with content, Adsense, and Amazon links.
3. Bookmark the hell out of it.
4. Tweet it

On the really hot ones you will get tons of traffic, especially if there is
no competition because you get indexed early.

I've made as much as $500 in Adsense in a day from one trend. No, it
doesn't happen often but for the little amount of work (you can do the
whole thing in under an hour) I find it's worth it.

Also, a lot of these trends bring traffic for a long time.

For example, when Levi Stubbs of the 4 Tops died, I put up a blog as a
tribute.

I am still getting traffic, Adsense clicks and even an occasional Amazon
sale of one of their CDs.

If you do just one of these a day, it starts to add up.

I don't recommend it as a main business model by any means, but for an
hour out of your day (unless you have more pressing matters) it's worth
giving it a shot.

On those days when there is a trend that is so new that there are like
only 10 sites online that have anything on it, those are the days when you
can really make out like crazy.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents on Google Trends.

For me, it's worth doing.

I use it to chose "general" keywords for AdWords.
