Don't Ask Me Why I Bought a Men's Blog - What Do Men Like?

lol .... haven't got a clue what men really like. Bought a men's blog, Trend Spike. It's pretty bare bones in content. Half-naked girls, mostly.

What would men want to read in a men's magazine or is it really all about the half naked girls?

Give me some clue what guys like.

      • What do men like?

More or less in an order:

Anything about Sex -- but I am afraid the pictures on your site need some makeover? You will need to have some really amazing content to make them come back for more.

Power -- Secretly, men are more obsessed about wielding power, next only to sex and money. This power can manifest in many forms, though. As a father, husband, boss, alpha in groups?

Money -- Most men have a single-minded, almost mono-maniacal focus on building wealth. Their pursuit of wealth can almost blind them to anything on the ground.

All other stupid things : Don't forget those toys money can buy; crappy things to do like smoke, drink alcohol and flirt with women. They would also be interested in shoes, accessories, fashion, boots, automobiles and such like.

Good example for you to follow would be Askmen

Nice site. Never been there before but I really like the content. Made me smile just reading some of the headlines. That's what I'm looking for.

I just bought it yesterday, so all the girl content came with the blog and it really needs some good content.

The women on that page are good looking, no doubt about that but it is just pictures and only pictures. There is nothing which goes along with them pictures, just some model or college girl posing... Now if there was content which surrounded them pictures, it would make sense, since there isn't, them pictures become useless.

          Chris / Skyfox,

I have no idea why you're turning this thread personal. And why, in particular, you're laying your own emotional baggage at Ashwin's feet.

          But, just FYI...

... Ashwin is a man. And being that he has a wife, I really doubt that he cares one way or another if men flirt with him.

          Cheers,

I'd want to see the DNA results first. Looks more like RuPaul is running a bodybuilding spinoff...

Suzanne, if you're looking for what trips the trigger of early-20's wannabe "playas", half-naked women are a good start, along with content on how to bed such women, how to impress such women, etc.

If you want to hook the "bros before hos" crowd of macho men, then things like good booze, cigars, sports (both active and spectator), gadgets, shiny objects - and half-naked women.

For the rest of us, especially as get "more mature" (read 'older'), just remember that we have brains, too. Mix in some really smart content that engages and amuses, but not on the same page as the half-naked women.

Have to second the beer, sports, and women. Then i'd add cars, gadgets, maybe some small business advice or money saving tips.

Lots of links and PR there though. Good platform to work from! Looks like mainly girlfriend type pics on there at the moment. Could reduce them and add more of the other stuff. You think you'll keep the site?

I'll keep it for at least awhile. There have been two men owners and the content has never really been developed beyond the girl photos. I want to add content other than girl photos, like ... from what I'm getting here, I'm thinking something like this in a magazine format:

      Left Column
      Health & Sports
      Exercise/Fitness
      Entertainment
      Dating & Sex Tips
      Joke of the Day
      Videos

      Middle Column
      Breaking News
      Grooming
      Galleries
      Gadget Reviews
      Movies
      Fashion
      Cars
      Travel

      Right Column
      Ads, etc.

Pick up any 'lads mag' and you'll be filled with ideas...

    Start with the usual:

    Get fitter/better abs etc
    How to perform better
    How to chat up girls
    Skincare for men
    Sports
    Cars
    Babes

Keep it aspirational and it will most likely be more popular.

Beer, women, sports in some order.

Also, pretty much anything sold at Best Buy, especially if it is overpriced and under delivers, makes a lot of noise, has more buttons than anyone could possibly ever figure out how to use, or has a screen that is so big you have to be at least 10 feet away in order to see the whole thing.

Interesting responses. Either some of these guys are just posing or I am. Maniacal fascination with money? Really? That is how you want to characterize the cultural (and anthromophic) impusle of men to care for their families and be the breadwinner?

First, having a political post in there was a bad idea - you will offend one side or the other.

I would model the site after Maxum magazine. Pena made millions upon millions with that vehicle and your site reminded me of it in electronic format. His bio on the subject may help you - great read.

Why, as a woman, did you buy this? Does this niche really appeal to you? Are you interested in the prurient side of men?

Lastly, the question of what interests men is not pointed enough. What interests men interested in soft porn is better. I for one have no interest in such a site or any advertiser that would be there. I'm interested in family, lifestyle, and church. If I need gadget info, or sports, or other 'manly interests' I'll find a site without naked/semi-naked woman on it. Frankly not a single woman on the web is as good looking as my wife. I'll stick with that.

    Good luck.

Try to forget the semi-naked women, although AskMen.com has plenty of that going on and I'm sure that it is a busy part of the site. These naked women or half naked women came with the site and won't be what this blog is about in the long run, although I'm not against some sexy photos on the site, as AskMen does with it's gallery.

Why did I buy it? I'm a site flipper and web developer and I intend to develop this blog into a blog that men like to read in a magazine format. I knew the original owner from another forum and he and the new owner mostly neglected the content and went for the girl thing. This blog can and will be a lot more than that. Initially, I'm not interested in how I'm going to monetize it. I'm interested in how I will make it interesting to read for primarily ... men. I've gotten quite a few good ideas from this thread on how to begin.

Are you serious? Trying to typify men into one category of likes??

There are many groups on men out there who like many different types fo things. You have to narrow down your target market more.

If, like your site suggests, your going to the men who like to look at pictures of semi naked girls, then you have narrowed down your market a little (let me add semi naked young girls with good bodies)

These type of men are looking for a little light hearted fun, where that be video;s of mishaps, jokes or the pics you have. Pretty easy when you narrow it down.
Go find some of the louder guys in a bar, and ask them, they seem to be your target market.

lol .... judging by the responses in this thread, there are a few generalizations most agree on
Beer, Sex/Girls, Sports, Cars and a lot of other suggestions that fit in with those. While guys may be unique, individual people, it appears that there are some common interests, by these responses.

There is one thing in common with the sites I've been given to visit ... and that is, drum roll
      half naked girls. lol.

But honestly, I can keep up a gallery of hot girl celebs on the site, but do want "written word" content that would appeal to men ... not just photos

That's where "stuff that will help us get one" comes in. Men will read any quantity of text if there is a reasonable probability that it can dispel some mystery of the (hot, young) female mind. Simple, basic things like "most women don't like men to be as muscular as men would like to be" can be expanded into eight and ten pages of rambling discourse, and men will sit there and read it and nod their heads.

Also, "stuff that will help us pretend we don't need one" is important. Some men have confidence problems (or jerk problems) that effectively prevent them from getting a date. They need to go out on Friday nights and act like it doesn't bother them, and go places that it isn't weird or laughable for them not to have a date.

This is a really good idea. Years ago I was reading an interesting male online magazine that had a lot of men writers and one woman writer. The woman writer's job was to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions that men had about what women really want or feel about things. It was an interesting read for men and women both.

Not all men want hot, young females. As a fantasy perhaps, but I, for one, prefer the self assured, comfortable with themselves, type of partner. That may or may not have anything to do with a site built around a group as large as 'men'; but is a reality that would make going to most 'men' sites on a regular basis boring as hell for me.

Many times a simple subject that has nothing to do with gender can be seen totally different by one gender or the other. Being a woman and trying to make something as 'authoratative' as what I am getting the idea you eventually want the site to be, I think will be hard with-out having men you can continually bounce topics off to get that difference, which ultimately would be why (I think) men would book-mark a 'man's site'

I could be totally off base with that,(having never bookmarked a 'man's site') but I get the idea you are looking to create more than the 'half naked girl for men to oogle' kind of site and more of a site that a guy, even if married would have no problem with his wife seeing him surfing it.

Or just go the gay route and hire Zeus, he seems to have a good handle on them.

Why do women always assume us men prefer half naked girls.

That's such a poor assumption to make. I find it quite insulting. I'm very angry right now.

The fact is we prefer fully naked girls.

I can wear my emotions on my sleeves at times and take offense to people from non-western cultures passing judgment on us and taking a holier than thou attitude that they are somehow better.

    I over-emphasized a point.

Since he is from S.E Asia, I shouldn't really be shocked at his post.

As for me mistaking him for a woman, he sure as hell sounded like one.

    Now back on topic,

if you are looking for ideas then I would look at magazines like Menshealth, FHM, Zoo, Playboy etc. Trying to narrow all men into one single group is not going to work.

I agree in general - but I think the attitude was started by someone else who responded to skyfox first post with this:

Such an insightful and completely irrelevant post.
This is not new from Butters - who is apparently 17 and quick to criticize other member's posts as irrelevant. The result has been several threads going off track in defensiveness.

This new trend to trivializing what others say in a thread is getting old to me - and we have several newer members doing it routinely.

I might suggest a setup like gorillamask.net (slightly nsfw). A lot of "guy" sites I might frequent are really just for the girls however gorillamask has some pretty funny/cool articles that I spend more time reading than looking at any pictures. If a site is all about the girls, it never becomes anything else in my mind.

So link to stuff like cracked.com and also write your own content. And on your content, you can have a related ad or something

edit: another good site to check out is mademan.com. Typical girl stuff but they also have a lot of articles about working out, fashion, etc

I hope you haven´t forgotten about motorbikes. That could cost you dearly. Secretly most of us would love to ride a big bike, be it a Harley or a THunder speed-like Kawasaki. Unforgivable to forget that one.

Also, don´t assume the girls have to be naked, after the 25 yr old threshold we do start tipping the balance form sexuality to sensuality.

In any case you could do worse than getting a few different male profiles somewhere. You will see that some likes/dislikes can be grouped together for different types of guys.

I'd certainly have a big section on mens health, not sure about the US but there's alot of awareness being raised around male health risks such as testicular cancer and prostate cancer.

P.S. Why not have a section telling us men what you women want, tell-tale signs she's into you, or what women mean when they say "....."

    Hope this helps!

Ya know, I've been re-reading many of the replies and I don't think anyone has mentioned Mixed Martial Arts yet. The word "Spike" in your blog's name made me think of SpikeTV.

MMA is HUGELY popular with 18-44 year-old men these days; bigger PPV revenues in the US than professional boxing. And it dovetails perfectly with half-naked females (the UFC has national model searches for their "Octagon Girls" that are popular in & of themselves).

      Check out these sites:

Sherdog.com: UFC, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) News, Results, Fighting

      Ultimate Fighting Championship

There's tons of good fight highlight videos available; it would be easy to set up a featured slideshow to generate quick traffic. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't even a few dedicated CPAs for Mixed Martial Arts.

Combine blood & guts with boobs & booze, and you've got a winner!

Comeon now... ALL boys like to blow things up... from putting firecrackers into your model cars to the, "here hold my beer watch this" spectacular.

Seriously though... trying to pigeonhole "men" into a single category is as hard as trying to pigeonhole "women" into the same kind of box.

I gotta' say that Playboy is still tops overall. Not just for the bewbies... but for the scope and breadth of overall article content. Anything else is going to start getting niche specific. Details runs a close second as a younger version of Playboy without the full nudity.

Maxim Magazine is like... for college-age guys at best. I personally find it annoying. If a publication could have ADHD, Maxim Magazine is it. So I would agree that if you're looking to score the younger, spastic, and less educated side of the demographic, then look there.

I would punch myself in the face before I read GQ Magazine. Not that I don't like to dress... because I keep style. But I don't give a crap about READING about it. REEE TARRR DED!!! If I want to know what is "in style" I'll take a stroll through Macy's or Men's Wearhouse.

Men's Health... meh... maybe in 10 more years when I am facing those kinds of issues. No offense Dr. Mani. I'll read an article here and there about specific issues that I face (I am Diabeetus) but I am not going to read a magazine or blog over and over about generic health for men. Boooooorrrring.

It may one of those lines created to raise snickers, but I'm one of those guys who does read Playboy mainly for the articles. They pay enough to attract the absolute top writers in the business. After awhile, the girls (while easy on the eyes) start to look alike.

There was a day when magazines like Playboy and its imitators were the only place men could see photos of gorgeous women. Now all they have to do is turn on their computers. Even mainstream TV is showing more skin than earlier generations would believe.

The acid test for a magazine like that is to ask "If I took out all the girlie photos, would it still be worth reading?"

Suzanne, it sounds like you want the answer for your new blog to be "yes"...

It really depends on the demographic. But in general men like women, sports, cars, violence (mma, girls fighting on youtube), money, video games, some like to gamble, some like other men, and some like to collect comic books, stamps, while others collect women's undies and pantyhose.

We men come in all different shapes and sizes. Some of us even like a well-made martini or freshly ground coffee!

My two cents...men are not a niche. I personally don't give a rats arse about half the topics people are suggesting to you. Men in their twenties will most likely have a very different list than men in their fifties. I would suggest you take what you know about IM and target your site to a narrower audience than just men. If you try to cater to everyone you end up catering to no one.

I don't think you have to hone it down to a men's health blog or half naked women blog. It's more an issue of identifying which "crowd" of men you're catering to.

Case in point, GQ and Maxim magazine are both magazines aimed at men, but they each appeal to a different demographic and have a different "vibe" to them (GQ being more upscale and Maxim being more for the regular guy). You may want to consider things like income, education level, age, geographic area (ie: are your visitors primarily coming from the US, etc.).

Some general topics that I'd include (in no particular order) are:

      Fitness/Workouts
      Dating and relationships
      Sex tips and advice
      Celebrity women
      Work and career
      Humor
      Fashion
      Grooming
Athletics (interviews with athletes, sports related crime stories or controversy, unconventional sports like martial arts and fencing)
      FOOD
      Movies
Music (which type of music might depend on your demographic)
Travel/Adventure (the whole James Bond thing)
Gadgets and toys (electronics, watches, cars, video games, etc. again, depending on your demographic)

      Sites to check out/model:

      GQ Magazine
      Maxim Magazine
      Details Magazine

I gave the posts a quick read... maybe semi-scan.

One thing you can consider is having sections for different age

would also make it more interesting and add more value to it.

I may be interested in writing something for you. Not sure what

    Simple.

Young men like to be able to do things and have things that will make other men curious, envious or nervous. That is why you will find several sites on little movie clips and pdfs called "instructibles". These will teach you how to make a laser pistol out of an old DVD burner. How to build bottle rockets. I saw one that showed how to take a stuffed beaver and make it into a computer case.

When we grow out of that stage we generally like women, beer and sports and the sports part is optional.

When we get still older, a sense of what is important in life begins to grow in us and we realize that beer should be number one in the list.

I don't know what happens after that. I'll let you know when I get to it.

I havent read the whole topic but I think your title is wrong...it assumes that all men like the same thing and while the stereotype is that all we care about is sport and sex it goes deeper than that...

We tend to be very focused and goal orientated, much more so than women for the most part...if you ask a man to go after a little fish he will go after it to the point of almost killing himself under 450 feet of ocean, women tend to be much more focused on finding alternative ways to do the same thing...ask any man in an emergency to run to a chemist and grab burn bandages, and other safety stuff and we will tend to focus so much on getting those exact supplies that we wont grab a doctor by the scruff of the neck and demand that they tell us what else will be useful if they are out of stock.

What I am trying to get to saying in a roundabout sort of way is we are almost all compulsive collectors and the harder something is to acquire the higher we hold it in esteem

It doesnt have to be the most expensive toy, but something that isn't often seen is very nice to own, if only for a private collection
