Clip art challenges and questions

Hi fellow warriors,

I just bought a DVD (ClipArt& More -- 3.5 Million) with clip art, only to discover I have no rights to use these online. Not the ones on the DVD anyway.

Yikes! As it turns out, the DVD only comes as a lead gen thing to sell me on a "Free" subscription to iclipart.com for 1 year (and I have not yet investigated how much it will be after that.

It says "The GIGANTIC collection of royalty free images!" right on the front, but when I read the rights section on the inside... I called them up and they confirmed it.

So my question... what the heck?

And also: where do you all go to find clipart and such that you can use (or do you buy photos individually at istockphoto.com? I don't want to get in trouble.

Any recommendation for a GOOD clipart DVD that includes rights that works on a Mac would also be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    all clipart have ilcense restrictions.

    Can you let me know how you plan on using your clipart?

    I know a lot about licenses etc, because I'm a contributor to several clipart sites.

      Well, I've never needed a massive amount and usually go hunting when needed, but I just took a peek on ebay and found an auction for 20,000 images taken from public domain etc that looks like it might help you out a bit.

      where did you get that dvd from?

      Can you return it?

    Millions of images...when it sounds too good to be true....you know

    I searched a bit and found this CD being sold on amazon, and it seems she is right.

    The best thing is to go on istock, shutterstock, dreamstime, fotolia, these are the ones I can remember... They have a good standard royalty free license, you can use images on your websites, blogs etc..

    There are certain limitations like in all Royalty Free licenses e.g you can not use clipart as logo, resell them etc..

    I know is more expensive, but you get good quality images that you are actually going to use...
    There is no sense in buying CD's with millions of images, since usage is so limited and you are not going to use all that.

    When it comes to free domain images...outdated images from prior 1923, I'm not sure this is a good idea....and nowadays, it seems nobody is doing art and giving away for free, and be careful with sites and blogs that give away free clipart that is copyright by someone else.

      First of all, I got it on eBay, and it wasn't hugely expensive, but still...

      And thanks for the pointer to the 20,000 images one -- I'll check it out. The problem seems to be that most of the clipart dvds seem to be for PC only and, well... I've got a mac,

      Second, I wasn't really after millions of images -- Not even sure how to find stuff, but whatever. I tried to find something with a decent variety that worked on a Mac and that seemed the only thing I could find (other than public domain stuff from way back when...) And I realized that much of it was online but was hoping that the CD itself had some decent clipart that I could use.

      Third, what do I hope to use it for:

      1)) The main reason: I wanted to make my squidoo lenses and hub pages a bit more visually appealing.

      Also for my website and maybe squeeze pages and Powerpoints for videos.

      Also probably my ebooks, although that's not as essential.

      The highest priority one is for those lenses etc.

      And, hm, well, I might want to flip some of those lenses at some point...

      So, Monica, I'm looking forward to getting the scoop on what I can and can't do (and maybe recommendations for good places to go to for clipart for those various purposes.

    I have dozens of clipart CDs going back (what seems like) a million years. I can tell you right now these huge collections aren't worth buying. I'm not even sure I can use what I have and I certainly can't find anything on those dozens of disks. IMO, better to just download what you need, when you need it, and pay for it if necessary. Then use the hell out of it.

    I almost exclusively use Fotolia.com ($1.0-$1.50 per photo). Or I' may check my personal photo library and rework variations of my own photos. It really is so easy to take good quality photos with even the cheapest cameras these days

    Also process variations of your own photos. Look for the Graphic Image Manipulation Program (Gimp) under the free stuff link at my blog; see my sig. file... I love free (I have no affiliation with Gimp, it's just a good free program)

      Hi Winlin.

      I like your idea of using your photo library. tIn fact, to a point I've been the same thing, though it's a bit limited. Maybe I should take more photos!

      Also, I hadn't thought of Gimp (in fact I wasn't sure what it could or would do). Definitely something to check out!

      Wish I had known that before I got it!

      I guess I bought it because someone I know told me about a cool DVD she bought and that she's been getting great clipart from for years now...

    I come across this:

    Royalty Free Vector Clip Art Images, Animations, Illustrations and Backgrounds at GraphicsFactory.com. - "Every clip art is available in multiple image formats, plus keyworded and cross-referenced to help you find them quick and easy. Plus the images can be used royalty-free for commercial purposes on products you sell."

    Every providers might have different terms and conditions. Just have to read before buying.
