I want to start an article directory - please do not steal my idea

by KenJ
26 replies
I have read of much disquiet here and on 2 other forums about the difficulties of getting articles accepted.

I personally have little problem with getting articles accepted but it came to me in a flash this evening that I could start my own article directory. I could make the rules to suit internet marketers.

As I have no idea how to do this you can have the idea and run with it.
But just to keep me in the loop.

How do you start an article directory?

By the way I have a great name for the new site. Maybe I will share, maybe.

You must be having one of those "THIS IS GOING TO BE A HIT"
    idea/moments

I have that every 2 days when I'm doing IM.

    Good luck with it!

I have been using articlemarketingautomation. It lets you set up your own blogs that is used for articles that are submitted to article marketing automation and you can use your blogs for your own articles too.

I am not sure how effective this site is as my article sites have not been listed yet.

      That is amazing

I had no idea you could do this. Now I really will keep the whole idea secret while I work on the learning curve.

A few questions to start with.

      How?
      Why?
      What?

I want to do this now.

If your articles are good there should not be a problem of getting them accepted.

If you start your own directly and accept every other article (quality??) think about it.

I would personally not go to an article site filled up with unprofessional, poor articles.

About scripts for starting your own directory, there are several, go to hotscripts.com

    All the best.

Well, if you are confident about your idea and if you take ACTION..you can make it a hit.. if you don't which we get every 2 days (I get every day LOL) then even if its great concept, its not going to be a hit.

Good luck to you kenj. Just know that you are getting yourself into a load of stress and anxiety! LOL

Really, it is more work than you might think.

p.s. I do not suggest using the article dashboard directory. It is currently full of holes.

Go to Guru.com ? Find freelancers at the world?s largest online service marketplace. and register for an employer account. Write a description of exactly how you want the website to work and programmers and designers will send you quotes for making it work exactly how you want it.

Its much cheaper than going to a design/development company but make sure to only take people with good feedback and established accounts.

    Hi Kenj

Once I get my easysellerpro project off the ground, my next one is an article directory

I have about a million articles to upload to it, so looking forward to all the backlinks lol.

I'm having it made to my own specifications tho, I find it much easier to do that.

Go for it, I certainly will

      Hi Kenj,

You probably don't want to hear this.................but............If I knew how much hassle an article directory was going to be I would never have started it.

For the last two years I have spent upwards of two hours per day going through the 200 + articles submitted to my directory.

In the last 6 months or so the article quality has really dropped. Most days I am finding that I am rejecting far more articles than I am approving.

And it is so boring going through badly written articles trying to find one good enough to accept.

My Adsense earnings are not nearly enough to cover the amount of work that I am putting into the site.

At the moment my article directory has been suspended because it is using too much of the servers resourses. Though this is probably my fault through using the article dashboard script.

Im not saying that an article directory cannot work. I think Allen Graves has a good idea in charging his authors $10 per month and I will probably be changing to a similar model once my directory is back on its feet.

It's just a matter of installing the script and promoting the site.

Just stay away from any free scripts, you'll get what you pay for.

Stay away from Article Dashboard, it is the most exploited directory script out there.

Personally, I use: Article Friendly article publishing script

        Good luck!

It seems like a ton of work, if it goes big enough then it will all be worth it. But like others said you will spend a lot of time filtering out spam that hurts the directory. Unless of course it is a free for all directory, which may work out. articledirectory4spammers.com LOL I bet if you targeted to spammers your site would get huge so fast.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[156293].message }}

Just to clarify, I do not charge $10 for the authors to use the directory. The directory is one of the bonuses of my $10 membership. The $10 is for exclusive information. All of the bonuses are just bonuses.

Either way, it's a good model which definitely stops the spam and increases the quality and integrity of your author base.

It is certainly a lot more than setting up the directory and marketing the site. I didn't want to rain on any parades, but you're going to have to be completely dedicated and possibly even give up other parts of your business as well as money out of your pocket.

Thanks for the input - particularly Allen

This needs a bit more thought.

In one short post I have gone from wondering if it is even possible to start an article directory to thinking I could start one.

Now I am considering all the pros and cons and researching all the links you have supplied for me.

I am also working on how to make an article directory distinctive. I think it should have a unique USP. I also would include some features that for some reason none of the current directories have.

This is now a big work in progress.

    Hi There,

I wish you all the best for your article directory, please do let me know when you have one.

I can imagine it would be a lot a lot of hard work for you to make it a real...just make it or fake it.

    Good Luck.

As others have said, it takes a lot of time and effort, I probably reject 85% of the articles submitted to my directory.

If I was looking at doing it again, I'd just submit my own articles to my own niche directory.

    Hi,

I have two different article directory scripts that I purchased that are very good.

I also have two domains for them that are excellent - articlegenius.com & articlewave.com.

I've had both of these for a couple of years. I also paid to have a graphic designed for one of them so that I could 'borrow' EZA's idea of giving out expert author status to everyone with a nice graphic to put on their sites (with an anchor link inside it).

But both of these projects are not even started. The domains are on Sedo parking.

But it's not due to procrastination. Even the lure of being as big as EZA and pocketing adsense cash doesn't tempt me. Ask yourselves why EZA are now upsetting their users while trying to find a way to squeeze more money out of it?

Take a look at some of the replies above from people who run directories.

'Nuff said. Work smart, not hard. Opportunities abound on the internet. Automation pays. It's just my opinion, but there are surely better ways to leverage user generated content?

    HTH

PS I have resell rights to article manager pro article directory script, so if anyone wants to buy those domains with or without the script installed on it - feel free to PM me. Articlegenius has the backlink graphic mentioned above too, and articlewave has a nice wave themed header I made

I try and steer away from telling someone not to start a directory...mainly because most will think I'm just trying to scare away any competition.

That's not true...if you want to do it, I'll even assist you if you need help (to a degree).

But in order to break through, you have to pass through what I call the AD Threshold. You see, as you start getting articles submitted, you get excited about it and you start to see some small bits of revenue start showing up in your Adsense account.

As the article submissions increase, so too does your Adsense revenue. BUT IT IS NOT AS MUCH AS YOU THINK. You are going to have to review (every single word of every single article) hundreds of them every single day. Then you realize that you're going to have to hire someone in order to keep things running efficiently.

Problem is that the amount of money you pay an editor does not equal the amount you are making from Adsense yet. You will effectively have to double your submissions from that point just to break even. But at that point of breaking even, you're going to have to hire another editor (probably).

Eventually you catch up and end up profitable. But you'll have to have tons of dedication, a lot of time for it to develop and you're gonna have to pay to end up getting ahead.

      OK, I've officially rained.

Again, I'm not saying this to scare away competition. I am just letting people know that it is a VERY tough job and one that requires dedication, integrity and a lot of patience.

Kim, I think your idea and path is a good way to go. Using an AD to supplement an already established website is a good idea. Plus, you have your own rules and can accept or deny articles from anyone you wish!

      Respectfully,
      Allen Graves

    Hi Kenj,

Just a suggestion to do your research and homework well. There are 1,000's upon 1,000's of article directories out there with the same ol' multple topics. Seriously consider taking your idea into niches where few have ever gone before... Nichify the idea and add a different innovative spin on things. Think niche wordpress article type directories. With gazillions of keywords out there in internet land, there are still so many Untapped niches to really focus on. In my opinion, that's where the amazing opportunities are. Take it one step further and develop the concept into multiple languages and translations. Again just my opinion on things...

Lots of luck with the idea...

    Ken,

As has already been stated, what looks good in theory is not always so great in practice.

Several years ago I ran an article directory using Article Dashboard, and eventually got to the point where I was receiving several hundred articles a day. Approving and managing those articles was extremely time consuming.

What was my return? About $50 a month in Adsense, and an occasional affiliate program sale.

I began having major problems with the script, and at that point I decided the payback wasn't anywhere near justifying the time I was spending on the project. I cut my losses, chalked it up to experience, and moved on.

Well John, Allen , Kim and everyone else.

You have helped me make a decision.

I will not start an article directory for the time being. I am not ready for it and my technical skills would be severely challenged to set it up properly.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I was full of the idea yesterday but today I realise that it is not for me.

      Another idea for the backburner.

Sometimes the learning curve isn't worth it! I have a few projects on the backburner for that reason. But over time, you could outsource and find someone to go through the articles that are submitted for you - a virtual assistant or something? But I guess the site would have to be profitable first.
