Removing low quality links

I was on the phone with someone the other day where a link builder had about 10,000 links pointing to a site, and the customer of the site was really mad because almost all the links were super low quality. They wanted them all removed. How would you handle a situation like this?

(the customer was a "bricks and mortar" jewelry shop, and fortunately I was not involved in the link building. I was just trying to give some advice to help)

Once in place you can't remove them if you don't control the websites. Would be a waste of time to try contacting all those webmasters.

If the links where achieved by self building (link wheels) and this wasn't specified in the link building campaign than link builder must remove them.

Anyway, imo, bad link good link doesn't matter, all links are good or very good or extremly good. But if the customer bought 10,000 "quality" links and got garbage than it's another story.

Removing links will cause more harm than leaving them in place. Removing that many links may well be a flag indicating 'darker hat' activity because it indicates a level of control over the links.

Incoming links like you described probably won't hurt you, they may not be counted, but they won't hurt you.

I pretty much agree with everyone, but it is funny (not as in "haha") when a business owner looks at the links and sees low quality. I really don't blame them, as now it is super easy to get at least decent links without paying for a bunch of junk.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I can see the owner being upset if he was paying for quality links and got nothing but a bunch of junk ones or, if they were all done in one day, that might be a problem with Google for a while. However, what's done is done. In time in won't matter and, who knows, some of those 10,000 links may become high quality ones in the future.

  • Removing the links sounds like an impossible task, so I would just tell them to talk to the person who did it and arrange a refund if possible. Unless however, the person made it clear they would just get them X number of any caliber link. If they deceived them that's a whole new scenario.

I agree with you that it would be impossible to remove all of them. Maybe the person who submitted the low quality links should try to work something out and start building quality backlinks for their client immediately.

It's not a possible task to remove all 10000 backlinks as you will not have any control on all those websites where links are placed. Anyway while placing orders or offering services be specific on what we are getting and what we are offering. Just Try to deal with the customer, explain them the facts and Get matter settled.
