Question about Selling a Site.

Hi,
I have a site registered with godaddy and hosted on my hostgator account (not a reseller account)

How easy is it to transfer the content + domain from me to someone who potentially purchases the site?

Thanks, sorry for the newb question.

If they have the same domain registrar (IE: Godaddy) then it is real simple. As far as moving the site itself, I use ftp. Real easy in most cases.

if the site is like Wordpress or Joomla and it saves its data in a database, then that's more problematic than if it's just some files that you need to move.

If you plan to sell sites, it's best to have a reseller account. You'd set it up as a separate account + domain, then when you sell it, you simply send them the login info for that account and push them the domain name. Takes 30 secs.

So if they don't have any sites currently, they can just sign up for godaddy without buying a domain and I should be able to transfer the domain to them and then they can use their own hosting.. right?

opening an acct with GD lets you get a domain name. No hosting is implied.

That's another benefit about having a reseller account. You can give them 30 days to move the site, or charge them for a year of hosting. YOU don't need to do anything yourself.

Also, you'll find that a lot of folks here (incl me) much prefer NameCheap to GD for domain registrations.

Pushing a domain from Godaddy account is really simple.

If they have a Godaddy account, the push is instant, if not , it takes 3-5 days to complete.

For moving the site files, you can read this tutorial made by a fellow Warrior:
