You can get WinRar for free, I think it has a paid version too, but my free version has never expired or anything.

You don't need anything to unzip a rar file if you have vista. Just right click > unzip. If you don't have vista, you can download zip genius. ZipGenius.it - Free zip utility for Windows that handles zip, rar, cab, 7-zip archives and CD-ROM ISO9660 image files or a free trial of winzip or winrar. |

I recommend 7-zip. It is free, open source, stable, small, fast and opens most archive formats, including RAR files. It will also reassemble most multi-part RARs. You can get the latest version at: 7-Zip I haven't had much joy with the free versions of WinRAR (they are not free, just trials). I eventually purchased it, and it works great with RAR, but I find it slow. Best Regards, Georgetta |

As some others have said, winrar original for me. Didn't realize there were so many alternatives, guess I never looked.

Hey Joe, 7Zip has already been mentioned, but there is a new (FREE) piece of software that is built on the 7Zip platform, but vastly improved. It is called JZip. It is open source, same as 7Zip. I like it much better. Adam |

I have Vista and don't need to install any additional programs to open this type of file.

most compression programs can handle multi compression types. rar and zip are two of the more popular ones. I use IZArc. you can find it at IZArc - The Ultimate Archive Utility - ZIP, RAR, 7-ZIP, UNZIP, UNRAR, ENCRYPTION. it is free and seems to handle most compressions well. PS - I have no affiliation with IZArc I just think it works well. |
