How do I take possession of that list? I have never done this before, have you?

Never have, but that sounds quite interesting. I would assume that they would export the list into some sort of easy deliver system, excel, notepad, csv, etc.

When I sold a website with a list, I emailed the buyer the list in csv format. He then imported it into his own autoresponder.

What service is the lists hosted on? If it's through Aweber, you can email support and they can transfer the whole thing into your account (Aweber to Aweber only, that I know of).

Otherwise, be careful - depending on whether it's double or single opt-in could be an issue for your autoresponder. In some cases, you may need to ask all of the members to opt-in again, which can lead to some loss.

If the website comes with a built-in email system like websites made of RAP, Joomla, Butterfly Marketing etc. then that's ok, you can email them anyways using the system.

I recently bought a site that came with an awebber list, and I was able to transfer it between accounts by putting in a support ticket.

You'll need the username and password for both accounts though, which requires a bit of trust (or an intermediate account).

If you import a CSV of subscribers, they'll need to confirm their subscription and you'll loose the majority of them. Best of luck!
