I haven't seen any mention of this here so far,
A company called Nuance sent this to me and I rewrote it, then added it to my book section where 8,000 of my books get downloaded each month.
SAFER READING
Can Make Our Books
Look BEAUTIFUL!
Most people prefer reading books like ours that have been saved in pdf format. Nuance PDF Reader installs with JavaScript turned off, by default. Your valuable data is protected. But, better than that, much better than that -- is the fact that OUR BOOKS ARE BEAUTIFUL in this new reader that you can get for free. "No signups, no sign ins, just a quick download and you've got the best reading machine on the planet."
Unlike Adobe Reader, Nuance PDF Reader installs with JavaScript turned off by default. So you gain peace of mind knowing that your valuable data is protected. If needed, JavaScript can be turned on easily during the installation process.
Nuance PDF Reader enables you do much more than just view PDF files. You can convert PDF files to Word®, Excel®, and RTF via a free, hosted web service. Use annotation tools to highlight, cross-out, and underline text for more effective collaboration. Even fill out and save PDF forms. Nuance PDF Reader takes up less disk space, is more secure than Adobe® Reader®, and works with virtually any PDF file. Nuance PDF Reader provides annotation tools that let you highlight, cross-out, and underline text for real collaboration. So whether you need to call something out, or strike something out, Nuance PDF Reader has you covered. Convert PDF files to Word, Excel, or RTF - With Nuance PDF Reader, you get the most accurate online PDF conversion available -- without having to install extra software.

The part that bothers me though is: "It's never been easier to upload, convert, and start using information previously trapped in a PDF."

You can read more or download a free copy from Speech Recognition, PDF Converter & OCR Solutions - Nuance is a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions for businesses and consumers around the world.
I've been using it for a few days now and I like the feel of it, the balance. Somehow my books look better in it than in the original, though I don't see how that can be so.

Unless what you mean by "data" is something other than what the reader sees, I don't think any data is really protected. PDFs make it somewhat harder for people to easily go in and copy stuff as they would in Word, but it is not hard for people with more professional authoring tools to easily get around this. And one could always re-type what he sees on the screen afterall.

Or do you mean the data on the host computer (the reader's) is protected from possible attacks that make use of javascript? Then I wouldn't have anything to say about that...

One last thing I could say though is that I wouldn't think any other party can dream of coming closer to the adoption rate of Adobe Reader at this time. On that account, I wouldn't be authoring specifically for anything other than AR. I am even hesitant to make use of Adobe Reader 9's new features that won't open in AR 8 without annoying warning pop-ups, even though one can create much more useful and bautiful ebook designs that way.
