Are keywords with over 1 million search result but have low PR sites on page 1 worth pursuing?

hi guys

So i've been learning Page Rank plays a big part in search results and in my keyword research I thought I had to avoid keywords that returned 100,000's or over 1 million search results.

However, if Page 1 of say Google have a few PR 0 or PR 1 sites on them, is it still worth pursuing the keyword?

And in terms of pursuing, I mean, will it take a "reasonable" amount of work to get to page 1 rather than lots and lots and lots and lots of work

thanks all

The number of search results means absolutely nothing. Look at the sites at numbers 6-10 and see how strong they are as they are really the only sites that matter. Ask yourself if you believe you can beat them. If the answer is yes than go for it. If the answer is no walk away.

Why 6-10. You scared of #1. That is all that matters to me .

While no one here really knows how pr is weighed in Google's algorithm, this should be proof that it is not as important as many would want you to believe . Or does it just appear to be proof ? When Google updates their pr bar ... those sites could easily be a pr 4

Check and see how many back links are pointing to the sites . Track the out going links , do they point to an affiliate site . Does the site take care of business on site ?

What is the degree of on page SEO. How much content does the sites have . Just because it doesn't show in navigation does not mean that those pages have not been crawled and are important to the search engines .

How long does the average visitor stay on site ?

There is a lot more important things than actual "exact match " competition.

999,000 probably don't know an alt tag from a long tail. Out of the 1000 left , 999 don't mean a thing if you are wanting to put your site where the Holy Grail of traffic is at .

Course that is just my opinion...but I am sticking to it .

When picking keywords always go for the number 1 spot. The top 3 spots gets over 75% of the traffic and the #1 spot gets around 40-45%.

Secondly don't let the amount of searches phase you out so much. Like the poster said above... use traffic travis and look at how many backlinks the top top 10 sights have.

Also sometimes broad search can display more than it needs to. Always use exact search when looking for keywords (put the keyword with " " around it)

I never understand this - why do people use anything else apart from Yahoo! site explorer to find the number of backlinks?

Is it to save the time to also find the PR of each of the pages/sites of the URLs?

How does one use the yahoo site explorer tool without owning the site?

all great and very helpful responses guys. I certainly won't let the number of results deter me.

is there a tool out there that determines if users use " " around their searches?

also, is there any way to measure the difficulty in being able to beat a PR0 against a PR1, and a PR1 against a PR2?

the keyword I searched for has mainly PR2 and PR3, but has one PR1.

this is just a generalized PR related question. I will certainly check backlinks too.

One of the best little freebies on the entire Web is Traffic Travis. Grab yourself a copy and learn to use it:

Free SEO Software | The Best PPC & SEO Management Tool -Traffic Travis

Use the SEO Analysis feature to see at a glance how optimized the Top 10 or 20 is for any search phrase. That one 2-minute activity every time you're trying to find a good keyword can make a huge difference.

And Troy's right, even though having to admit it takes years off of my lifespan.

If the keywords aren't "buying keywords" you'll spend a lot of effort for a little return.

Also be sure of the quality of the keywords you chase.
