When it's okay to use trademarked images

This has been a question for me and my partner for quite some time and we've played it safe so far, but are you allowed to use trademarked or copyrighted logos in your site/squeeze page if you are directly promoting that company? And if not, what's the worst that could happen if you did it anyway? I mean, I assume they would just contact me, providing they stumbled upon somehow, and tell me to take it down. But is it possible I could get sued or have accounts suspended? Anyone with personal experience that could enlighten me would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

If it's a big company you should be careful even if you are promoting their product. But if it's a "regular" person chances are very likely that they won't give a damn. I know I would'nt.

Most companies have clipart, logos, etc. which are available for use by people marketing their products. If you use something not within their approved materials, then you could be taking a risk.

If you are selling as an affiliate, look in their affiliate portal, and see what they are providing. If you don't find what you want, ask the affiliate manager for what you need.

The area you would get in the biggest trouble is if your start trying to make your site look like an official website, or offshoot of the company, instead of marketing their products as your own company.
