Most people think that by making a blog is best to only focus on something example if is football , only focus on football posts and topic so that google spiders know what the blog is?. But is it okay to have a mixture of entertaiment and technology in the blog?take a look at my blog Mr. Tweetzon I have mixture of celebrities, technology, even cars. Do you think google knows what to do? |

I wouldn't be worried about what Google knows or doesn't know. I'd be worried about your readers. If you try to appeal to too many people (too many niches), you don't appeal to anyone at all. As an example... I've hardly watched any of the Olympics. That's because NBC is trying to please everyone by jumping from one sport to the next. You see one figure skater. Then five aerial jumpers. Then you watch a couple bobsled folks. Then... (on and on). Well, I don't care about all those sports, so I don't watch the coverage at all because it's a waste of my time. Same with your blog. How targeted is it? Or a better question -- who is your target market? (You don't have to answer that -- it's just a question for you to ponder yourself to make sure your blog appeals to your market.) Someone might land on your blog because they're interested in celebrities. They bookmark it and come back, only to find you're now talking about cars and technology. The people interested in celebrities are going to stop reading. See what I'm saying? cheers, Becky |

What she said ^^ If you're all over the place, then you won't have any readers. They'll have a look at your blog and not come back-cause they have no idea what it's even about. Try to stick with 1 theme/category/niche/topic. That will be better for your readers. I've seen a weird blog before that I couldn't figure out the point of it. A post on a cookie recipe, a post trying to sell satellite TV services, a post trying to sell an MMO ebook, a post about dogs. Very confusing. |

| Multi purpose blogs can and do work (at least in my experience.) my blog mainly deals with home business but different people come there for different reasons. Consumers are coming to order/re-order products, and opportunity seekers are coming to find out more about my affiliate program and whether or not its for them. |

See my review blog in my signature as an example of this type of blog. First of all, you aren't especially looking for social infotainment readers, although you will get some along the way, but people interested in a specific topic that's on a particular page or categories who arrive on a page via Google/Yahoo/Bing. This means that you'll need to treat each page as a destination, targeting long tail keywords and building links to individual pages. Essentially, you treat it like your own news site or perhaps your own personal article directory or Squidoo. It will be likely that your homepage won't see much traffic but your inner pages will see a nice number of search engine visitors every day and this will add up, provided you build links to them. You may even end up with internal pages having a higher PR than your home page. |

Its good to have different topics in blog but it would fall in general forum . But if your building links in the blog it would be harder for you to do so

The only stretch it MIGHT work is if at the end of the day, the blog is about you. You may like celebrities and post some commentary, while you also like computers and may give an opinion there as well. And, because you are a human being, you'll also talk about what you did that day. That'll only work if you can really know how to engage your readers. Beyond that, Becky makes some really great points here. |

Now I'm really cornfused. Do people in general think that blogs are good for building links within articles so that they either link to something like an amazon product or an IM squeeze page? Or would it be better to produce a blog that people want to read weekly and has ads or related articles that people might find useful. Or would an uber blog have all of the following: repeat readers who return weekly or biweekly has a theme or niche to it's articles has related niche ads has amazon affiliate links back to products or something else? Hrmm, maybe I just answered my own question... bd99 |

But successfully creating, promoting and monetizing a "hodge podge" blog is sort of an advanced IM topic (whereas tweetzon is a beginner). I've seen far too many beginners "burn out" and end up quitting because they weren't making money with their general-interest sites. Let me offer an example... (you from now on being "general you" and not bgmacaw )Suppose you wanted to start a Facebook-clone site. Just putting up a general "me too" site and hoping to nab all of Facebook's prospects as well as existing users wouldn't work. The users are happy with Facebook, so very few of them would come over. They don't have a reason to. Now suppose you created a social networking site for gardeners. Or people who own businesses in your region. Or people who own Yorkshire terriers. Or women who've survived breast cancer. Or ebook marketers. Or... Point is, starting a social media site that appeals to a narrower niche would fly. It'd get off the ground more quickly because the people of that niche would say, "hey, THAT site is for ME!" I can see this in my own sites. Like right now, I have several dog blogs. One of them is more of a general dog blog. I get traffic from the SE's, mainly. I do have to do keyword research to pull in that traffic. Another blog is about a problem in a specific breed -- in other words, it's very focused. And I get much more traffic, repeat traffic, subscribers and revenue on that site. I get SE traffic much easier, because I don't have as much competition. I can do other promotions more easily and get a higher response rate because of this narrow focus. But I also get lots of people linking to the site naturally because my blog is the "go to" place for folks who have a specific breed of dog with a specific problem. This isn't just my experience. Those who've created general-interest blogs AND niche blogs will likely tell you that it's easier to carve out a smaller niche and dominate it. Can you make money with a general interest site? Of course. But it's easier -- especially for beginners -- to focus in on a smaller niche. And that's why I suggested to tweetzon that he focus on a smaller segment of the overall market. But all of this is just my opinion, so take it all with a big ol' grain of salt. ![]() Cheers, Becky

For example, I did 200 articles in the first 30 days on my general interest site. Once you lay the ground work in terms of links/promotion and content though you don't have to pump quite as hard but it isn't a "fire and forget" operation.

This might cause you a problem. First, since your blog is not focused on a single topic, Google Adsense will find it hard to deliver targeted ads. They may run public service ads. Second, it will be hard for you to get your blog ranked high in the SE for most of your keywords, cause you r spreading yourself too thin. If you focused on one particular topic, it could a lot easier for you to get ranked for it. And drive targeted traffic as a result. Since, you are using blogspot, you may easily start separate blogs around your keywords. It does not cost a penny. |
