I don't look in the WSO section very often but half of the time when I do, it's because my attention was grabbed by the "last post" section on the main forum page. You get about 30 or so characters to get my attention and you fill it with ...

=======================>>

I know it's not the majority but I'm still amazed at how many do it!

It was a lot worse before you joined. You used to be able to use all sorts of punctuation and graphical characters, and some people went overboard with them to try and bring attention to their offer.

Fortunately the mods put an end to that early last year.

Yeah, it's madness. I know you might only get a few minutes of the front page spot if you are lucky but with 3k+ people logging in that's surely some potential, if one of them replies to the thread then you get front page again.

        Hi L,

Just wanted to clarify a bit.

That works in other parts of the forum, but not theWSO section.

The only wahy to bump a thread back to the top is to pay for it.

        All the best,
        Michael

lol - I deleted this the first time, but what the hell....

Are people really going to start complaining that ====> is being used in a WSO title?

            Yep!

And if those are no longer allowed, they'll start complaining about the use of the word "FREE", or anything else they think gives others an "unfair" advantage.

Just to clarify, Im not talking about the rights and wrongs of using characters, or inside the actual WSO forum itself. I'm talking about wasted ad opportunity on the main page, circled in the screenshot attached.

Ah, now I see what you mean, Lee.

In that case, new comments do make it appear in that slot...for about two minutes.

I think most people click on the link to the forum (on the left) and not the thread title (like your circled example). But I get your point, and it is something worth considering.

You could well be right actually, I'm just basing it on my own experience, I'm not particularly interested in the WSO section and the only things that really get me in there are that front page snippet or sig links of someone who's posts I like. Be intersting to know if others do the same though, maybe I'm an extreme minority

The OP wasn't complaining about it - he made a good point in saying the first so-many characters appear on the main forum page.

So you can used them to create compelling attention-getting titles or you can fill those spaces with =================

There are some really old ones that are buried and were never bumped.

I think enough time has passed where those should have been updated.

Maybe a hobby project to clear them out

Jeremy, were your ears ringing yesterday? I think someone was talking about you.

Actually you could be right but I do see them pop up in that spot quite often, maybe it's old ones getting bumped?. Either way, wording the title to try grab some clicks from the main page is surely worth some effort.

        Not really....

When we were able to use characters, they owned any words that you could have thought of to put in a title.

    According to WSO rules,

    6. We no longer allow wild characters and ascii art in WSO titles. The image at the bottom of this post is an example of what we want to stop. Look at it closely. Your WSO will no longer be approved if it looks like those in that image. Be moderate. If your current WSO goes against this rule edit it now. I'm not going to attempt to go into this rule with a fine tooth comb and create a massive volume for it. Just use common sense and create normal titles, with normal use of quotes and exclamation marks if desired.
So, it's not allowed. But I don'y know how mods approve these threads.

They may not submit their WSO's with these illegal characters. After the WSO is live you can edit your title - perhaps that's how they slip them in.

I notice many threads get deleted, I have been reading a thread one day and come back the next to read other peoples responses only to find it gone. Now unless someone was really rude I cant see why an entire thread gets deleted and not just a post. Seems a little bit over the top but hey its not my forum and im sure there are good reasons.

This happens in the main forum, but in the WSO forum not so. The WSO Mods are not going to penalize the seller for someone else's remarks (unless they are in cahoots and violating the rules). If a WSO thread is deleted it was violating a rule, not based on someone else's comments.
