How I Finally Got A Local Biz Client On Our $10,000 SEO Package

There was a pretty popular thread a month or two ago about selling Internet marketing services to offline local businesses.

EDIT - HERE'S THE URL: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...hlight=Offline

As a link building service, we get several local companies who've "read some place or another that you need backlinks", and of course we work with them just as we would anyone else.

Most local business owners don't know a whole lot about the Internet, and by now, most of them have dropped a TON of money into failed campaigns.

Getting a local business owner to buy anything they haven't decided on their own to purchase is... in my opinion, a little bit difficult.

So, we have this local windshield/auto glass repair client. The guy owns over 10 shops in Texas, so he's making good money, and obviously doing well with other advertising outside the Internet.

Up until 3 weeks ago, he was happy just paying our $65/month for links... and hanging on to #7- #10 spots in the SERPs.

Anyways, I had been reading a thread on Warrior Forum about increasing the ROI of the client instead of just performing a task, and I went over to Craigslist and threw up a fun little ad in the cars/trucks and service section.

Here's the ad:

Hi, my name's John and I fix cracked windshields cheaper than anyone else.

If I can't fix your windshield in under 20 minutes AT YOUR PLACE, I'll let you throw a rock at mine!

Give me a call, mention "Internet Ad", and I'll do the whole thing for $60.

Apparently quite a few people called up and mentioned "Internet Ad" because the client called me wanting to do more. A lot more.

So, I reminded him about the service I'd been trying to explain for the last 3 months, and we had the paperwork done and payment processed the same day.

Anyways, I'm sure this could have gone the wrong way... or that it might not work every time for every client. But my take away from the whole situation is that none of these local business guys give a crap about the Internet until it's making them a boatload of money.

Just something to think about.

This is such a vital and obvious principle.

If you help a business make real sales and profits beyond what they pay you they're going to be willing to hire you for project after project and if you establish the potential value of a new project well they should also be willing to hire you for continually increasing fees.

    One insight...

Whatever you did to help this business make more sales...it might pay to do a whole lot more of that.

Sometimes our thinking gets stuck in providing a specific service but I've seen some of the craziest and the simplest solutions make serious money for businesses.

If something is working to make a business sales pump it for all it's worth. Ask "how can I scale this up? How can I do MORE of it?"

A business owner doesn't care if you use craigslist ads or youtube or facebook to make sales for them.

They're just happy banking the profits.

    Kindest regards,

I've already started doing similar "extras" for other clients to try and drum up sales, and thanks to the lesson learned from the craigslist experiment with the auto glass customer

      a. we have a better understanding of what to optimize for online

      and

      b. We have a new marketing strategy for other auto glass/windshield repair type businesses.

So scaling is definitely in our scopes right now.

    MyLinkClub,

Now, that's a great USP: "If I can't fix your windshield in under 20 minutes AT YOUR PLACE, I'll let you throw a rock at mine!" Sell that USP to that business owner or incorporate it in your marketing plan!

Keep up the good work and the creative thinking! I would love to know what you decide to do to "scale it up".

Not only did you employ fundamental internet marketing tactics and a great understanding of "how to sell", but you built a really creative ad too! That's a powerful one, two, three punch!!! Go celebrate (but, then it's back to work for you!)

That goes for any type of tool/method that people are trying to sell business owners.

So the issue is not trying to sell them the internet but rather how can you show them a good ROI and then proove it
