I want to learn to install a blog (Wordpress) onto my domain. What should I know and how to do that?

Thanks,
Isa.

    Isa,

The easiest way is to get into your cpanel interface, from there into fantastico, and then click wordpress in the left column. You fill in a few fields, click install, and voila, you're done.

If you need more specific instructions, let us know what hosting service you are using.

But as Kat explained, there should be a "Fantastico" icon within your Control Panel that you can click on. In there, you should have the option to click on "Wordpress" and then "New Installation."

Yeah, the install is pretty simple if you cpanel has fantastico.....most do.

You just need to put in the user name and password you want to use for the admin account and select the directory that you want to install it. If the blog is going to be the main site, leave the directory field blank. That way the blog will come up when you got to "www.yourdomain.com". You only put a name in that field if you are adding a blog to an exiting site, so that it would be "www.yourdomain.com/blog" for example.

Thank you all. Okay, I will do that. I use hostgator for hosting.

Earlier I read somewhere in the forum about themes and plugins. What are they and how to know what plugins I should get? I do not know what 'plugins' mean and their function. Can someone tell me about it?

        Thanks,
        Isa.

Themes determine the layout and design of the blog. It could be visible and invisible to the readers. Also there are free or paid themes. Just google free wp themes and you will get plenty of them. A plugin is a small program that serves a particular function, such as related posts, most popular posts, etc. You can pick and choose which plugins you'd like to install. DON'T EVER USE FANTASTICO - it's an open invitation for hackers!!!!

Skills you need: FTP, setting up a database & user in Cpanel.

Wordpress.org has a great guide on how to install. Hostgator also has excellent help with their 24-7 help desk.

Check out Craig Desorcy and Abledragon on this forum. They both have very good (and free) WP guides. The WP site itself has very detailed installation guidelines as well. If you run into trouble, you can come here and post specific questions.

Here is a video showing how to do it. Most hosting companies use Cpanel so it is the same on most servers.

Also lots of other great videos on the Wordpress TV site to help you get the most from Wordpress.
