Hi Warriors!

Like a lot of people here, I'm interested in producing a video that is basically just a series of screen captures, not videos of me or anybody else. I need to ability to include text in/on the screen captures and audio (voice and music).

Like a lot of people, I don't have money to spend on software for it right now, so based on Warrior recommendations, I've downloaded the free CamStudio.

However, l was just wondering what Warriors' opinions of it are? I've downloaded it but have NO idea how to use it at the moment. As always, the professionalism of my business (in whatever I'm producing) is of paramount importance. The videos MUST be of high/reasonable quality.

Does CamStudio produce videos of reasonable quality? I noticed that the documentation referred to .AVI and .SWF videos. Are those standard formats? Will I be able to upload videos to YouTube in those formats?

(I'm not at all techie when it comes to videos, so please forgive the dumb questions. )

Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,
Michelle

P.S. In order to connect with my audience more, I know I probably need to post videos of myself. Fortunately, I bought a FLIP video camera right before I lost my job, so I have that. But I'm basically a writer/copywriter who's much more at home hiding behind my computer and website. The idea of posting a video of me SCARES me! But I have the equipment to do it!

I've been trying it out. You need to download a couple of other applications to make it work - SolveigMM AVI trimmer (an editing suite) and FLV Producer Lite (the player). It works pretty well but the player has the developer's name stamped all over it and there doesn't appear to be an easy way to customize the look of it.

I don't know how long your videos need to be but I'm about to have a look at the Jing Project. Its a free app from Techsmith - the people who produce Camtasia. I've been using the screen capture tool for images in my reports and the video app records audio as well. The reason I ask about the length of the videos is that you're limited to 5 minutes with Jing.

      Hmmmm....

Thanks for the tip about Jing.

At this point, I doubt I'd be producing videos any longer than 5 minutes. So it would be worth taking a look at it.

Ok, I've downloaded the trimmer. Thanks for the tip!

But is .AVI the file type needed for uploading to YouTube? Instead of messing around with a player, I'd just as soon upload it to YouTube and embed the YouTube video anwhere I needed it. Do you see any problems with that?

        Sincerely,

This was pretty much the definitive thread on Cam studio, includes a lot of detailed instruction and a couple of video links. Basically Josh Anderson was saying it is better than Camtasia. He also gave a beautiful example if he is still hosting it for people.

Animoto is another good option that a lot of people talk about and is free, however you are limited in the time they allow. They offer a paid version of course as well. May just be something you can add to your arsenal.

I used Jing myself until recently when I bought the full Camstasia 6.0.

Jing worked great for what was needed. The only problem I had was the video length. I seem to ramble on sometimes and I've noticed my videos are twice as long ever since I got Camtasia...I wonder if that's good or bad lol

    Nightengale-

Read this, then watch this. Josh knows his stuff - he's a video nuts-and-bolts kind of guy.

CamStudio will work fine for your needs for now - save your money.

Sorry but I gotta go with Camtasia Studio 6 on this one. It overall has more features that you don't know how good they are until you learn the program. Then you are like there is no way I could ever go back to camstudio or lesser capture software. There is also an option for final production that lets you pick what format you want. i.e. uploading to Youtube, blog, website, set dimensions, etc. $300 is a hefty tag and while well worth it, can be found cheaper. I downloaded mine for $150 from Camtasia Studio 6 Screen Capture & Recording Software and they took paypal. Camtasia also has a really cool feature that allows you to record page frames just by scrolling over them. It really comes in handy if you are are recording a certain part of the screen that is particular to a site. i.e like you want to record a twitter widget on your blog and demonstrate how it continuously updates to your viewers. Just my two cents, but you can't go wrong with camtasia.
