2checkout.com: good idea or not?

I have a site where I list all the services I offer to clients. For now I use paypal as payment processor, but I've been looking around for other solutions. With all those 'scary stories' you hear about accounts being closed, I like to be safe.

One of the things I came accross is 2checkout.com. I read through their site and it looks good. Now I'm wondering what other people think. Would it be a good idea to change to 2checkout.com or would I be best to stay with paypal?

After several years with PayPal, I changed my location and they then cancelled my account saying "Security risk",even after 3 appeals, at which I was greatly dissapointed, since so many sites only accept them for a payment processor and it is indeed a hassle finding an alternative.
I then decided to sign up with 2checkout, who were very curtious ,helpful and an excellent alternative. However I entered a wrong website address and had some bother trying to get it changed ( Can't be done from the rgistration form ). They wanted to know all about the details etc. which all turned out fine in the end, although it took about a week tooing and froing. At least I feel comfortable with them.

    Sam,

that's exactly what I'm afraid of, so if I get some good reviews for 2checkout for selling services I might change it over. I really want to secure my business.

I'm a Paypal horror story victim. 2Checkout is now my primary processor.

Fees are a little higher, customer support is great in my experience, and when you do volume you get to know the support/security guys on a first name basis.

I personally like them. Truth be told, if I still had Paypal I'd still use them (less fees), but I don't and 2CO is a good alternative.

We all had our fair share of horror stories about PayPal "limiting" our account. An their effort seemed to have been stepping up in the States. The report from my China's associates is that there PayPal is a lot more relaxed. They have customer support center in China that's uniquely available to China-based PayPal account to get limit off as soon as you call them. In US, no way! A call to PayPal could get you waiting for almost an hour and the customer service staff wouldn't have much authorization to help you get the limit off most of the time.

I used 2CheckOut a few years ago. The problem with them is the high commission rate and it's turnaround time of your cash flow. I gave up using them after a while. You won't like it if you're selling tangible products since you need money quickly to pay your suppliers. PayPal is doing the greatest job in this regard unless you get your own merchant account which is another story.

Seems like the experiences with 2CO are overall positive up till now

Scott - I did notice that the fees are a bit higher, but if that means my money is safer I gladly pay it.

Clickbankcsv - I sell services only so that paying suppliers wouldn't be a problem. But if you are selling goods, it's definetely something to think about.

Colinmacg - thanks for sharing your experience too.

I vote for 2Checkout. 5+ years with them!

I have Paypal for all my sites, but all scripts are configured to be easily switched to 2CO, since PayPal plays evil jokes from time to time

I've been with 2co for about 5 years and never had a problem with them. (I like to hedge my bets and use them as well as paypal)

Only problem is your money isn't as usable as in paypal

Do it! Get 2CO. I've been with Paypal since mid 90's. I've had horror stories - One time I had an account suspended just by making a call asking a question... (several years ago) That made me look around.

I've been with 2CO for years now. And I have 2 accounts. I opted for their Payoneer Mastercard for a fast and easy way of getting my money. Very cool.

For those out side of the US, Payoneer offers a virtual US bank account which opens much more to you.

    2CO is a GREAT idea!

Can you please explain what you mean by this?

Does it mean I can use the payooner card on paypal? What if paypal needs proof of address?

Kim - thanks for your response. I know I won't have 'easy' access to my money, but I think that shouldn't be a problem. Plus, I often spend more money when I have it in my paypal account, just because it's there when I see something interesting. Might be a good way to stop my excessive IM spending LOL

Alex - I was thinking of going with the Payoneer mastercard too. How long does it take to get the money on that card from 2CO?

Well... let me be the wet blanket in this 2CO party.

I've been with Pay Pal since nearly day one. I've run
hundreds of thousands of dollars in transactions through
    my account.

I have absolutely ZERO horror stories to tell. I've never had
the slightest problem... never even a hint of a problem.

When I get ready to launch something new I call them
to let them know the details and to let them know to expect
    a sudden influx of cash.

I've found their customer service to be excellent on every
occasion. Again... never a single problem.

People will tell you all the horror stories you have the time
and patience to listen to. You, however, can NEVER be sure
that you're hearing all the facts.

If you aren't violating PP TOS in any way I would be hesitant
to suddenly change how money flows into my bank account based
on the unverified stories of a bunch of internet posters who I don't
know and have no way of verifying. What kind of business decision
    would that be?

Finally... if you're just selling to the IM crowd it probably doesn't
matter but if you sell in niches occupied by the general public your
sales will suffer if you offer only 2CO. PP is a known and trusted
entity on the 'net. The vast majority of people outside of IM have
    never heard of 2CO.

    Tsnyder,

I understand what you are saying, I do. And believe me, the horror stories aren't the only reason why I like to change payment processor, so it's not like I base my sole decision on that. But it's part of it.

I also understand that with 2CO I can receive paypal payments, I have paid via paypal other people who use 2CO so I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. The extra benefit is that I can get credit card payments too (which is one of the other reasons why I'm looking in another payment processor).

But thank you for your view, and you are correct, we can't base a business decision solely on stories we hear.

This probably pisses me off more than anything about the Paypal issue.

I've been marketing online for 6 years. Google my name, I dare you to find a negative comment about me or any evidence of me doing ANYTHING wrong. I haven't.

And people assume, because Paypal decided to screw me, that I'm some kind of criminal or something. Ask ANYONE I've worked with what their experience was like. I treat my customers/clients like gold.

Because some mega-corporation decides to screw me over people automatically assume I must have been doing something "shady".

I was with them for 6 years and my account activity was flawless, and they shut me down for no reason. I don't care what anyone says, don't bet that it won't happen to you, I didn't think it would to me, but it did.

    It's bull****.

See, Scott... this is exactly what I'm talking about.

I don't know you... you don't know me. Nothing in your
post would cause me to give it a second notice concerning
the choice of a payment processor.

Treating your customers like gold isn't part of PP's TOS last
      time I read through them.

You say your account activity was flawless... I have no reason
to either doubt or believe that. You say they shut you down for
no reason. I have every reason to doubt that. I'm pretty sure
that pissing off paying customers for no apparent reason isn't
      part of PP's business plan.

In any case, no serious business owner would give the least
bit of weight to your post during their decision making process.

Yeah, and that's what pisses me off. People assume I did something wrong. Because of Paypal's decision, I look like a bad guy. And that does piss me off.

You don't think they do shut down accounts for no reason? I personally know other guys who I DO know have the exact same thing happen, for no reason...

You really think that every single person out of the THOUSANDS of horror stories are liars?

I'm not saying don't use them. I'm just saying it can and does happen. And automatically assuming I'm a liar because I claim my account was shut down for no reason (it was) does piss me off.

    -Scott

P.S. If I had anything to hide I wouldn't talk about this in a public forum... Food for thought.

I have used 2Checkout for years and never had any trouble. They have great fraud detection, but sometimes do not disallow an order for several minutes after it has placed - only to say that if you are providing any instant downloads upon orders being placed, you may want to re-think that or be prepared to lose the odd one because the order could be disallowed 5-15 minutes after.

I actually use both Paypal and 2Checkout with a front end shopping cart that allows my customers to pay using Paypal or 2Checkout. Reason is that many clients prefer to use the money they already have in Paypal - I don't want to lose those sales.

Nobody said you were lying, Scott.

What I CLEARLY said is that we have no way of verifying
the info one way or the other so it has no value in the
      decision making process.

I make business decisions based upon verifiable facts, not
      anecdotal claims.

Do I think all those thousands of horror stories are liars?
Not necessarily. I'm sure they all believe they are right.

I'm also sure I've looked at many of their sites and knew
instantly why they were banned. Seriously, how many of
those people do you really think read and understood the
TOS before diving in? My bet is most of them just clicked
the accept button and proceeded on their merry way.

When you say "You say they shut you down for
no reason. I have every reason to doubt that." You're calling me a liar. And I don't appreciate that.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just saying that making assumptions like that is completely unfair.

I read their TOS. I'm signed up with dozens of affiliate networks and payment processors, I read the TOS, I'm not a fan of losing money.

Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it won't. Again, I'm not saying don't use Paypal. I'm saying they will screw customers over, it's happened thousands of times.

My sites broke zero TOS. And people like you who assume I did something wrong does offend me.

        That's all.

10/10 to 2Checkout! We get more orders via 2Co then PayPal.

So whether they're popular or not, people have no problem using them. And that's what matters... if "are they credible?" question is concerning you.

They also have no such thing as "limiting accounts".

    Hi Leslie -
We have used PayPal with nothing but difficulties. Go to: www.paypalsucks.com and you decide.

We use 2C0 for a wide variety of niche websites. 2C0 will also do renewal membership programs. Their service is great and we've had no problems.

We use ClickBank for other ebook websites. Clickbank pays your affiliates for you.

    Good Luck Leslie!

I don't have anything negative to say about 2CO, BUT, they are VERY strict on what is, and what is not allowed.

I could not run my primary business through them. I check directly with their support, and they declined my business. Bummer, but, such is life.

For now, PayPal has been working fine for me for close to 10 years in all.

Next step is a merchant account with Authorize.net.
