What makes someone a Social Media Expert?

Social Media Marketing is the craze right now, PR Firms are all jumping on board now because their clients are asking that service. Four years ago, there was MySpace, LinkedIn and Facebook just opened its doors to the general public. It is the wild, wild west of Internet Marketing out there and I see more people making the claim that they are an expert. When I research their Social Media profile or LinkedIn Account, I seldom see someone who can actually make that claim.

What makes someone a Social Media Expert?

Just found this link after I wrote this Thread, good info

Measurable results.. not just pure follower count (anyone can get followers.. that's the easy part). But conversions, how to find targeted followers/friends and an ability to communicate it's effectiveness using real examples, case studies (their own and others) - also leading by example.

I most certainly see people on Twitter that claim to be experts, but completely have abandoned using Twitter right with feeds and automated posts. That an expert does not one make as an example.

adding "Social Media Expert" after their name.

Dan Kennedy talks about how sometimes you just have to name yourself the expert on a given thing and increase your rates accordingly.

He justifies it by saying if you know 30% more than someone and can help them get a result in the area they want then in relation to them your an expert and most of your customers fall into the "them" category.

Social media use of -at least big name- companies isn't related to "conversion"s at all. It isn't a sales medium for them as it is for us Internet Marketers. It is more about customer satisfaction, reputation management and ultimately branding. And there are other metrics to them, "sentiment" for instance.

The type of experts pitching to us folk are all about the the follower numbers and how to sneak offers between fake socialising.

Right, but you can still measure that.. on some level right? Through example over time. Perception of a person's interactions..

Oh yeah, the metrics are there definitely for measurability. I was with a big corporation (internet business) several years ago and I was astonished by the type of reports project analysts were producing for managers.

This is one of those very fresh areas that new metrics, approaches and best cases will be introduced. Actually, with regards to the original question, dwelling on this and adding to the current literature could be one way to a legitimate claim for social media expertdom if somebody wants to take it.

After reading hundreds if not thousands of profiles on twitter, it seems that everybody and their brother is a Social Media Expert. My favorite is the self appointed "Social Media Strategy Consultants". Nothing gets me like the word "strategy".

I believe that for 99% of these self proclaimed social media experts, their sole qualification is knowing more about social networking than my Dad.

    Self-proclamation, of course!

The link you provided sums everything up very well.

By the way, did I mention that I am a social media expert?

My point is that big companies are spending thousands of dollars for Social Media Marketing for their businesses. Radio, TV and Print Media don't convert like they have in the past 10 years and Direct Mail is DEAD.

I got got busy after I started this Thread, bought a domain and built a Weebly site in past 20 min. Your thoughts? haha....the domain was .99 cents with GoDaddy

That is a nice article James. I helped my sister get established online...basic stuff though, to really do an adequate job takes time and effort. This is a great niche for anyone with the skills.
