Social Bookmarking warning .. possibly

I have just spent the last 10 hours trying to recover normality to my laptop.

So what happened ? I decided to use "social bookmarker" website to submit my pages for bookmarking, after signing upto some sites and then moving onto the next through the social bookmarker window I suddenly had a never seen before pop up window that would not go away telling me my system was in serious error and I needed to pay 47 dollars to get rid of them before I could do anything at all with my PC.

The only way I finally managed to get rid of this was by starting my machine in one of the safe modes and pulling up the offending newly installed program up with Notepad and deleting some of the code.

Note, I didnt delete all of the program because I had tried doing this numerous times but it always reproduced itself so though why not try and just mess the code up so it reproduces messed up code, seemed to work.

I was then able to start my laptop up in normal mode and access internet, downloaded "spybot, search and destroy" and then spend 3 hours doing re-runs to clean my machine.

Laptop is still not 100% right and I might have to do a factory restore soon, so word of warning, make surall your anti-stuff is right upto date.

Pretty sure it was downloaded through social bookmarking through social bookmarker, I checked the install date and time of offending code and it tallied right up with me shutting one of the windows down earlier today.

Yes some social bookmarking sites are targeted with a virus, this is why I use Kaspersky because it blocks them and I never have a problem.

Normally it is the lower end bookmarking sites that are hit and the ones that have like a .pl domain extension. I have seen maybe 4 or 5 sites in the last year get infected with the virus which effects you during submission.

Pretty sure it was the 2nd one in the list "slash dot org"

I already signed up with some of the bigger ones but thought I would blast my posts to a shed load today and proceeded to sign up to the smaller ones.

Cost me 10 hours of work and a wonky puter.

Not really sure how these viruses work and if its some kind of hack to their site so deffinately not saying its the sites fault.

Why do they do it? Why are these people so intent on creating havoc and we suffer through these viruses? It has happened to me but fortunately my husband is a computer tech and he fixed it for me.

Unfortunately Sue, some peeps dont want to work for money and instead try to put the ****ters up people with nasty bugs for easy bucks, I can see how some folks might be tempted to pay the 47 dollars just to have their machine running again but how the f*8* could you trust to pay someone 47 bucks for fixing something they most likely caused.

This is what new users of the internet have to put up with and its sickening. Its only because Ive seen this type of stuff before and found ways to beat it that they didnt get any money but theres plenty out there wouldnt know any better.

Seriously, get AVG free if you don't want to pay for an antivirus on your laptop. Never had any problems (for last 2 years). (i hope my luck wont break now )

Those site viruses are easy to stop if you have an antivirus installed.

Pligg sites are especially prone to being hacked with a virus added.

If you're a serious bookmarker or use any software that visits tons of sites like scrapers, I wouldn't rely on any anti-virus. Instead, use Sandboxie, which creates a "sandbox". Then, if you get a virus you just delete the sandbox and none of the rest of your hard drive is affected.

I would second that. The cost of backup hard drives has come way down, even if all you do is copy your most important files across once every couple of days you are still ahead.

Sorry Guys, but I disagree to an extent. Having good virus protection (and backups) AND Sandboxie is the safest way to go.

Again, if you use Sandboxie, it "traps" viruses in a sandbox on your hard drive, where it can't do any harm to your system. Got a virus? Just delete the sandbox and create a new one, it only takes a few seconds.

          Kurt,
Kaspersky does this for you .. It will remove the virus before it even gets to your system. No need to create a sandbox and delete it, it is already done automatically. Thus why I always recommend Kaspersy.

I am not a windows users but a mac user that has WindowsXP installed using Parallels but Kaspersky has worked great these last 2 years since I have owned this Intel i-Mac and not once have I had any problems with any infections.

The wakness is Kaspersky has to first detect the virus before it can delete it. While it has worked well for you in the past doesn't mean it will be 100% effective in the future.

If one is using scraping or mass-posting type programs that visit 1000's of sites at a time, I still strongly suggest using Sandboxie. Sandboxie doesn't "detect" anything. Instead, everything is saved in a protected area on your hard drive.

Using these programs have more risk than other programs...You are using "footprints" to find sites that are run using common/free scripts. These are exactly the favorite type of sites for hackers, which is why WP, phpforum et al have so many security problems. By using "footprints" to these scripts, you're finding them the exact same way hackers are. And using scrapers and submitters, you'll be visiting tons and tons and tons of the hackers favorite sites.

I still suggest that if one uses these types of programs to use Sandboxie. It doesn't hurt, but it sure may help.

Sandboxie has a 30 free trial and still works a nag screen after 30 days...And if you want a license to remove the nag screen and get a few more functions, it's something like $40 US.

Yeah understood Kurt, I see what you mean... I do not use any type of scraping programs and for that matter not really a windows users..lol

So yeah I can agree if it is blocking it inside a box then I could see the many benefits of using Sandboxie ...
