WEBHOSTING, UK OR ABROAD, DOES IT MATTER

I am new to IM, Over time i would like to have a number of websites/minisites up and running, and a membership site.

I live in the UK

Bearing this in mind, what webhost do you recommend

I like the look of bluehost and have found some good comments about them, however should i go for a uk based webhost, does it make any difference.

thanks for your thoughts

SIMON

BlueHost, LunarPages are also good. If you have niche marketing or affiliate marketing etc. in mind check if the web host offers cPanel and Fantastico. I am a Hostgator customer.

Additionally, if you want the US to be your main marketplace and want to rank well in google.com you should choose those web hosts. But in case your main market is outside the US, for example the UK, you would want to purchase a .co.uk domain and find a host in the UK. It will give you a slight edge.

I believe it matters allot, but it will depend on where your market of business is. if in UK only Uk hosting service is what you want, and if you market is all in US get a service there. it will make a difference when in comes to competitors research of the same market.

  • If you want a quality host in the UK look at Rochen. They have servers in UK and Dallas, USA.

I use HostGator and several others. And I still don't get why people sing their praises so much. They are average at best. I dread working on my WordPress blogs on HostGator because it is so much slower than my primary host.

I don't think it matters where your host is based as long as they are reliable and have great tech support, i personally use pickaweb in the Uk, their tech support is fantastic and servers have a great uptime, but like i say it doesn't matter where they are based you can buy with most host UK or USA based all TLD names

      interesting thoughts

One of my businesses will be in the UK only, however i want to go into info products and affiliate marketing and sell all over the world.

Is it then better to have 2 host companies, one here in the UK and one in the US.

I live in the UK and I have a UK host. I've had no trouble ranking high in american search engines. So I would suggest 1 host, where, it doesn't matter

What I have found is that I rank in a different place on google.co.uk to .google.com. On co.uk under uk listings it's really easy to reach number 1 as there's alot less competing pages, on the .co.uk normal search it's a bit harder to rank higher and on the .com it's harder still. I believe this is due to competition not where the site is hosted.

If you're doing SEO and want to reach the American market remember to check google.com and not google.co.uk to see where you really rank.

I live in the UK for most of the year, but have both US Hosting and UK Hosting packages for different kinds of websites (e-commerce, blog, review, etc).

It is simple really, the US hosts are better for US search engine rankings and the UK hosts are better for UK search engine rankings, generally speaking.

Not a very helpful post IMHO. Please advise as what you consider would be right, right, right.

Depends what you're going to do. Who polices the Internet is a grey area. You might be planning on doing something that would be frowned upon (or downright illegal) in one country, but perfectly OK in another.

For example, online gambling is perfectly legal in the UK, but anything to do with online gaming is strictly forbidden in the USA. So if you were planning on having an online gaming site, a US based hosting company would be a bad idea and could result in you finding yourself on a flight to the states handcuffed to a US marshall even though you've never set foot in the country in your entire life. Conversely, if you are planning on creating a site based around a book or video that is Public Domain in the USA, then a US based site would be a must, as proving that same work is public domain in the UK could be a complete nightmare bearing in mind our PD laws are Byzantine to say the least.

It absolutely DOES matter as regards location.

People searching via a UK engine, yahoo.co.uk etc are giving a different set of results to those running via US IP address.

Sites hosted on UK Servers take precedence in UK searches, somewhat of a simplification but for the purposes of the OP's question good enough.

If you're primarily selling a UK service, host on UK Servers -always.
