One thing Ive learnt this week about traffic

As the title reads, I wanted to share something with anyone just starting out in internet marketing, who may be struggling with generating traffic. For established marketers this is no doubt, a no brainer - but something Ive overlooked - up until just recently. I should point out that Im by no means an expert on generating traffic - I just wanted to share this in the hope that someone may get something from it.

Ive always had the mindset, research a potential niche, develop a product, build a site and make sales. I didnt care about messing about too much with lists or offering additional sales, or any of that. Just gimmie the CASH! Terrible I know!

I just wanted the thrill of hearing that cash register go DING - when the sale notification email from CB hit my inbox.

I always figured - just make the sale and get the hell outta there!

That was up until recently when I really started to think through what I was actually doing.

Now traffic isnt a strength for me - but Im working on it, and tirelessly. This last week or so, I decided to hammer the backlinks, shoot videos and post a dozen articles, all of which Ive done. Ive posted articles on site as well as within article directories such as EZA.

Now, in addition to this, Ive started really ramping up my interaction with my list. Having listened again to Adam Shorts videos, and having spoken recently with Brad Gosse, and infact, looking through my inbox at what other experienced marketers were doing (Jim Edwards etc) - I came to what should have been pretty obvious realization. And this was.....

THE EASIEST VISITORS TO ATTRACT ARE RETURN VISITORS!!!!

Id always fought with trying desperately to get hundreds of visitors a day to my sites, and up until recently have been getting VERY lousy results. So as a means to change this, I started hammering my list, sending an email every second day - and by hammering, I dont mean PUSHING THE SALE - I mean, offering HIGH QUALITY RELEVANT CONTENT!!

This has seen the overall traffic on my site increase steadily just after a week and a half of doing so! And the return visits is confirmed by referring to Google's Analytics.

So basically what Im now doing is this....

1. Initial follow up email
2. What did you think of the product email?
3. GIVE GIVE GIVE (in the form of providing almost educational content about my niche)
4. GIVE GIVE GIVE (again great content, perhaps even something free!)
5. GIVE some more
6. Push the sale! Try pushing the actual sale.....
7. GIVE GIVE GIVE (in the form of providing almost educational content about my niche)
8. GIVE GIVE GIVE (again great content, perhaps even something free!)
9. GIVE some more
10. Push the sale! Try pushing the actual sale.....

Then repeat repeat repeat!

This *seems* to work, and the way I see it is that if you get say, 100 visitors a day, and 10 join your list, then after a week, that should be 100 visitors a day PLUS your return visitors over the period of that week which *should* be another 70.

Dont make me do that maths - Im tired, but you get the point right? Its like a snowball effect

Anyway, just my $0.02 worth. I hope someone out there gets something out of this post.

It is for this exact reason that people say "the money is in the list"...building a relationship with readers, customers, viewers (w.e. they are to you) is the fastest route to success in this field and list building is one of the best ways to build that relationship (not the only way).

If you can bring in 10 new visitors per week and two opt in then you now have two people who have not only told you that they are interested in getting information on their subject BUT they have also given you permission to make their lives easier by sending that information directly to their inbox. Once you have that all you have to do is deliver happiness to their inbox (advice from frank kern) and the sale is as good as yours.

The important thing to remember when list building is that you are not in it to make money. Approach you list with the intention of providing them with the vital information that will give them all the happiness they could ask for. Approach them with the sole goal of helping them achieve or get rid of whatever problems they may have. Once you do that the money will come..

Thanks for the great info John, posts like these are vital for new marketers and some mid level marketers to remember.

People will hate me for saying this or love it....but traffic is EASY. The biggest part of why most people fail is because of what happens when the traffic gets to them.

That is where the magic happens. When you understand what happens when the traffic gets to you, you can fix it and improve it and that is where the money is.

It is all about how well you can convert that traffic.

Thanks for the great info here, I am just wondering what I would sell to my list after the initial sale? I am launching my own product and once I have offered that to my list I dont really know...I may have another product down the line. I guess I would then need to look at other products that I feel my customers may be interested and then become an affiliate to these?? is that kinda the right way to go? I dont have any backend products.

Pls any tips appreciated as I know the list is the most important thing.

Moneyland, the message here is to provide HELP to the visitor first in the way of sharing great information and content - THEN offer them something, not the other way round.

Does producing your own content work better than giving away PLR content? What are your thoughts on that?
I dont use PLR stuff, I only produce my own products and content, always have.

    John,

Great share. We often hear but do not understand "the money is the list".

The money is in the relationship between you and your list.

A weekly newsletter to your list is a great way to provide excellent content for them and include a non direct sales pitch.

John - Once again thank you.

    Regards,

    Ian

Solid post. One thing to mention I heard the other day form of the big guys, is that giving content is good, but you CAN push an offer on every email while still offering valuable content and still look good.

Sending out an email without an offer is like throwing money out the window.

I agree, and always finish up my email/article with a "dont forget, you can purchase my blah blah blah by following the link below.."

Some of the biggest product launches where an education in themselves with some of the free teaser content.

        Content sells...

It's been offline knowledge for decades - an existing customer is easier to keep and get to buy than a new one is to get in the first place - for some reason online people forget..

In both retail and advertising I've heard it said - the first sale is the hardest.

i.e. It's much easier to get someone who has bought something to buy something else - as long as they were happy first time!

One of my affiliate merchants (physical products) has a 90 day cookie - returning buyers usually spend more 2nd and 3rd time around.

Definitely key is buttering up your list members.

One thing you can do to seriously help is with every single additional freebie you give out, have that tie into your original offer.

So say your original offer was on 6 pack abs exercises.

You send them to your freebie page which is for like 2 exercise videos.

Those videos lead into your main offer. at the end of your video you say: 'if you liked these, go here right now to get the complete set'.

The first email you send them is a thank you for downloading email, with a back up link to the download + maybe an additional plug of your original offer.

Then your second email is a social proof email which gives them testimonials from current customers.

Your third email is an additional free video which also ties back into your original offer.

No sense in wasting a freebie just to make your list happy. You can do both - make them happy while leading those interested to where they can buy.

Frank kern does this a lot. Gets me every time.
