Could it be a setting in your htaccess file, that redirects everything to the index? Only thing I can think of. Thats what it sounds like to me, the htaccess is forcing every one to the index. Unless you have some odd plug-in or redirect on your pages.

I've been wrestling with this same problem and even started a thread on a similar situation.

You mentioned permalinks, which are good, but the 'recent posts' are on a "page", I think. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. That 'page' is getting all the SEO love.

Try putting All-in-One SEO plugin on your blog and spend some time optimizing the 'meta' description and keywords for each POST. If your "posts page" is getting those kinds of hits, adding the SEO to each individual post might get the surfer to land at the right place.

If anyone can tell me how to get a surfer to land on an individual post on a WP Blog/site I'd pay for that!

Maybe I am missing it, but thats how normal SEO and wordpress work, has worked for me for since I've been doing blogs. I don't understand why they would not come to the page that is listed in the search engines, unless something is redirecting them.

I have not used the plug-in you've mentioned, never used any seo plugin, but maybe that is what is sending them the wrong way? I don't know how it works, but it has to be either a setting in htacces or code on the page (maybe from a plugin) that is sending them elsewhere. Something it redirecting them.

In reality, redirecting surfers away from the original page might even hurt you. I know with G images, if you try redirecting they can and do drop you.

I have quite a few WP installs, and never had this problem.

Some themes will also play funky with your settings,

If all of the rest of your settings look good, try changing up the theme.

First of all thank you to everyone for their suggestions and help.

Investigating this problem further this is what i found
For example- when my site appears on google for a certain keyword, it doesn't show my post on that keyword. It shows my description and URL that would appear in google if i searched my exact URL. So instead of showing www.blahblah.com/keyword(s) it shows WWW.BLAHBLAH.COM on google. So i don't think its my blog that is redirecting the visitors. I find this very strange and its got me confused. Any more ideas?

Sounds like just your index or main page is ranking, your post or single pages not ranking. So seems was not really a problem. How old is the blog? How many backlinks? Do you have backlinks to the post pages? Many variables, hard to say for sure.

The blog is relatively new, approx 1 month old. Just concentrating on the content at the moment and have done no link building except for a few social bookmarks. So i have nothing to worry about?

I've experienced this - what seems to happen is it shows the homepage until that post is off the homepage, and starts showing the post itself

No the post has been off the home page now for a while. I show 5 posts in total on my home page. Its not one of them.

  Looks like the search engine bots don't visit your site often enough,
  so they think your old post is still in your homepage.
  
  I suggest you add a "Recent Posts" section somewhere in your blog,
  as well as an "Archives" page which is linked to from your homepage.
  
  Did you customize your RSS feed, or did you leave it as is?

Here's my guess- you make a post about midget purple squirrels. The SE finds it on your home page and indexes that page for that phrase.

Weeks later, I search for that phrase and the SERP link takes me to your blog's home page, since that's the page that got indexed for that phrase. But your article on midget purple squirrels has fallen off your home page.

This happens to me all the time when a blog comes up in a search. It's quite annoying when the phrase I searched for doesn't even appear on the page that was returned. Just shows how far the SE technology needs to advance to be useful.

Here's a solution for those with their own wordpress blog that receives visitors from Google.

Someone searches for "blue widgets" on google, clicks a link that takes the visitor to your home page of your blog ... this solution will print "Looking for blue widgets?" with the "blue widgets" portion hyperlinked to your wordpress blog's search function. Visitor clicks on the "blue widget " link and the wordpress search function will return results that includes your post about "blue widgets".

You will need to modify your wordpress theme file(s) and include the following php code. You will need to edit your Main Index Template (Presentation -> Theme Editor - > Main Index Template).

Get the code here: http://www.davewooding.com/warrior_wordpress.txt

You'll have to experiment with placement to have results show up where you want (maybe edit the Sidebar file instead - or whatever files are appropriate to your specific wordpress theme). Here's an example of adding this code to the Main Index Template for the Impact theme.

This was tested on Wordpress version 2.05.

Not sure if you would be interested. But you might want to try setting up a blog through wordpressdirect it has quite a number of plug-ins installed and it helps you get your page optimized pretty fast. There are a few membership categories, but you may just want to check out the free one first before upgrading.

I dont remember having any problems with the links on google and all ending up on my index page. Hope it may be of good use otherwise ;D
