Did I Discover Something New about Google?

I noticed something strange with Google today when doing a search to see how many links a site has. As you probably know, you can check how many links Google reports there are to your site by forming your search query like this:
link:www.yourDomain.com
I wanted to check on how many links there were to a site that someone was talking about in another thread, only I accidentally typed "links" instead of "link" so my search query was like this:
links:www.theDomain.com
Notice the "s" at the end of "link" making it plural instead of singular. The search results reported over 58,000 links to the site. Then I removed the "s" to use the right syntax, and Google reported only 180 links.

What the ???

Now, Google tells you the syntax to use is singular: link:whatever

...but that only shows 180 links. When I accidentally used the plural (links:whatever) it showed over 58,000 links.

I went to advanced search and changed it to show 100 results per page. Then I went to the end (Google only shows 1,000 search results no matter how many they say there are) and lo' and behold, the sites on the last page had links to the site in question.

I tried this on one of my own domains too, with the same results. Forming the query like Google tells us to shows 189 links to one of my sites. Forming the query with the plural shows almost 30,000 links to the same site.

Google is notorious for under-reporting links, but unless someone has an explanation for this, I think I just discovered a way to get the truth out of Google, or at least a way to get closer to the truth when it comes to finding how many links a site has to it.

What do you think?

Dennis you might find that using links: is just performing a normal search query.

I thought that too, that's why I went to the last page of search results and checked to see if there were links to the site I checked, and there were, so it seems it's actually reporting links.

I checked a few of the sites on a test domain of mine and none of them have backlinks to me.

hmm...I just checked some of the pages supposedly linking to my site, and they have links to my site. These are pages that beyond the initial number of links the correct search syntax reports there are.

Something is strange...I hope it's not just me.

Simon, if I may ask, which domain did you check?

When I search "link:domain.com", it gives me the actual backlinks. When I search "links:domain.com", it gives me an actual search query for "links domain.com". Am I missing something?

    EDIT: Too slow, I guess.

I've always used the links: prefix.

At some stage in the distant past, I used link: and got no results for a site.
When I used links: I got quite a few.
So I thought I must have got it wrong, and have used links: ever since.

    cheers, Eric G.

Yahoo site explorer is a better way to check for links. (BTW, it treats with "www" differently so check for both - meaning with and without)

Hi Dennis, I did some research regarding your accidental discovery. I tested a URL with only 4 orthodox Google Backlinks ( link:domain.com ). Then I tried the one you suggested ( links:domain.com ) and it returned 70 results (after filtering out the repeat search results ). However when I logged in to my Google Webmasters Tools account I found almost all out of those 70 are listed there among 500+ others. I don't know if you guys check the Google Webmaster Tool for the number of backlinks that Google think you have, but I closely follow it and think along with Yahoo Site Explorer it's a great tool to track your backlinks.

I just check one of mine.
    link:domain = 6
    links:domain = 45
    Google webmaster tools = 858

Google doesn't like to reveal links to a site out in the public, so you really have to use Google webmaster tools to get an accurate account. (Or Yahoo's site explorer) Of course the tools are only available to our own sites, so you can't use it to spy on the competition.

I think this is just a standard web query. I was able to use it on my site and find plenty of sites with "jeremy morgan" in it, but no links to my site.

I've kind of come to that conclusion too, but if you search for the domain(dot)com it seems to find pages with domain(dot)com on them. The pages I've checked have all been links.

@ VegaGreg - yes, the purpose was for checking domains that don't belong to you.

@ rmholla - thanks, I'm well aware of Yahoo Site Explorer as well as a few other places.

Oh well, it's been interesting, but I'm no longer going to monitor this thread. Thanks all.
