Niche Market Saturation

Just a quick question.. I wanted your thoughts on this..

So if there are a LOT of people looking through niche markets to put up sites and get ad revenue from... at what point does it become oversaturated, and impossible to still be a player in this market?

example (these are just sample numbers):
There are 1,000,000 different niches.
10,000 of them are feasible targets (due to strength of competition, etc.)
There are 1,000 users working to monetize these niche sites...

So at some point.. this field WILL get saturated right?

And how far off is that point?

thanks!

Nearly every niche has "some" level of saturation. I tend to be a proponent of finding your own niches, and never going off of what people tell you is "hot hot hot". One thing that might get your creative juices flowing is to go here
    Google Product Search
and refresh the page a few times and write down a few things you imagine might not be saturated. Then explore a little further. I like randomness sometimes when it comes to research.

The day any niches becomes saturated is the day you tell yourself it is.

For new person they often pick things that are common, and often it is more difficult to do well. For example, trying to rank and sell concert or airline tickets would be tough. Sure, you could do it, but there are dozens of people who work every day all day on google adwords, and know all the tricks. It could be a rough time for a new person.

Starting off with some things that are less saturated have a better chance of achieving "beginners luck", and you can have fun delving into niches that way too.

saturation only happens when you can't find a way into the market and come out with a profit. Look how many diet plans there are. Look at how many clothing brands there are. Look at how many solutions there are which all do the same thing, albeit with a different twist or angle.

THAT is a big part of marketing, if not THE biggest part.

The ironic thing I see in a lot of marketing training online, is that people tell you to target the small, obscure niches because there is little competition. That may be true, but when someone makes a big splash in a small pond, there is very little water left for anyone else.

On the other hand, when someone makes a small splash in a big ocean, it simply adds fresh water to the sea.

Think about that for a second...

    Nope.

New niches are being created all the time. Everyone over 30 reminisces about their teenage years. Next year, a bunch more people will turn thirty. They were teenagers in 2000, and the people who are thirty THIS year weren't. So there's a whole new nostalgia niche opening next year, and plenty of room for thousands of people to enter it.

In addition, all the people who graduated in 2001 are going to have a 10-year high school reunion next year. Do you think you might be able to enter a niche related to that? Or target some of those people for whatever niche you're already in?

Think about all the life events everyone experiences at specific ages. Every single year, a whole new crop of people has that experience, and can be targeted. And more of them, every year. And every year, the people already targeting those niches get a little more out of touch with what that niche wants.

And don't forget all the new stuff. Who cared about Twilight two years ago? Or Susan Boyle? Niche marketing will never get saturated. It can't. It's constantly expanding, just like the universe.

You can go into any niche an be competitive by creating a USP (Unique Selling Proposition / Point).

    Price, service, location, packaging, people...

Weight loss - weight loss for brides ... who have special needs.

A weight loss product for brides who are paraplegic.

You can use your advertising to sell your USP but you are still in the weight loss market and open to sell products to non-paraplegic brides and non-brides.

The rest of the weight loss marketers can not compete with your USP. You own a corner of the weight loss market now.

Not everyone sells the same product, not everyone uses the same niches, there are always new product releases for different niches... the market will never become saturated, Internet marketing is forever growing, options are endless. And if you think about it, not everyone gets the same traffic, people use different techniques to market their products. For example..someone could be selling the same product as you but its how you market it and how you bring in that hungry crowd of customers that will really help you outshine your competition.

Well said! That's IM in a nutshell for you.

I think the only difference between now and then is the ease.

Back in the day you could throw up a few articles and you'd have a $100/day income before you knew it.

Unfortunately it's not that easy anymore.

You just have to level up your skills more.

I feel it is difficult to run a niche project. I am in tea business and have a tea directory but It seems there are no many people interested in it. Now I wanna join some related products forum but it also seems there are no such one with enough active people.

Maybe it is because i am a novice and not on the right track. I wish there are more people glad to share their experience.
