16 Yr. Old Whiz Kid (do me a favor)

Hi Warriors,

I wanted to ask everyone a favor...

I'd like to introduce a young friend of mine. His name is Dakota (he will be responding to this thread) and at the grand old age of 16... yes 16... he's got a serious interest in learning more about what it takes to be successful in IM.

I'll explain more about him, his experience (a lot for a 16 yr old), and so on, below, but the favor I'd like to ask is this...

Will you please provide any words of wisdom you might have regarding the following?

==> Where to begin (based on his current experience).
==> Ideas for overcoming hardship & moving forward.
==> Tips for staying organized as he progresses in IM.

Dakota is one of my son's best friends, but he's had some hardship over the years, including the untimely murder of his father when he was little, a recent devastating fire that gutted his family's small business, and only a tiny network of local friends, based on the fact that he doesn't attend public school.

However, he's one of the brightest, friendliest, outgoing teens you'll ever meet, and he really has a good head on his shoulders. You'd never guess that he's 16 by reading his emails or hearing the maturity in his voice (he does SOUND young, but he says grown-up things).

He has worked with Wordpress since 2006 as a site administrator for a popular video game website and forum, has assisted his mom selling things on eBay, and his mom is a web designer... so he's looking to expand on his web development knowledge, and open to suggestions. He's actually excited that I turned him onto the Warrior Forum.

He actually recently mentioned to me that he has had some struggles overcoming his past situation, lately, and that he's thinking of getting "a job" to help his mom out, and I told him that whatever he does, do NOT give up on your dreams. I also recommended freelancing on sites like oDesk, eLance, Rentacoder, etc.... but not sure if they allow minors.

Anyway, he lives in my local hometown, so I've got ideas, myself, for guiding him in the right direction and would like to get him helping me as the opportunity presents itself, but I wanted to make this intro to you guys to see if anyone would be willing to somewhat "take him under your wings" to point him in the right direction... or just encourage him to keep looking ahead and to never give up on his dreams.

If you want to just post your comments here, he'll respond. He's currently trying to get his WF username changed, so you may see it change at some point from the time he responds.

I appreciate your help!

Warm regards,

Andy Hussong

    Hello Warriors!

As things have been laid out pretty accurately, I s'pose I'll just introduce myself.

My name is Dakota Laflin, and I want to go to college for either Music or Law. However, my situation leaves me open to experiment with what I have already learned. So, in order to prepare for the future I've decided to learn more, and actually captialize on it by becoming an IM.

I've been interested in Web Design and managing websites since I was thirteen. It all started with a Content Writer position and then I ascended within the ranks all the way to Administrator.

Andy has done an amazing job in summarizing my situation, and even preparing a list of what I need from the community. If any of you can give me any advice or information I would appreciate it immensely.

I hope to hear from some of you!

    With hope,
    Dakota

      Hi Dakota,

      Welcome to the Warrior Forum,

I'm sure others will have a lot more to say, middle of something at the moment, but I will return later. One thing I do want to suggest is to start your IM career the right way. Personally I would consider setting up your Warrior Forum username with your real name. Easier to do now than years down the line....

I know I'm not doing it, but thats another story.

      Good Luck

      Darren

      Hey Dakota,

It really makes me feel good when I hear of other teenagers getting an interest in business and IM. I am currently 17 and have been in the IM business for about 9 months now.

If you would like, it may be a good idea for us to contact each other and see what kinds of things can be done. I have some experience in different fields of IM and I'd be more than willing to share my knowledge with you.

Relationships and contacts are one of the many keys to success in this and any business and I would be more than happy to form one with you.

Please send me a PM if you are interested in talking further.

      Good Luck To Ya

    Hi Dakota,

    Welcome to the forum!

The first thing I suggest you do is research some of the topics you're interested in. There is a wealth of information in the archives. (Just use the search function.)

For the moving past hardships topic, look in the "Mind Warriors" forum:

Mind Warriors - Success, Power, Self-Improvement

For most of your general money-making questions, you can look right here in the main forum (unless it's on a topic related to one of the subforums, such as SEO or copywriting).

The questions/topics presented by Andy are a bit general, so you probably won't get a whole lot of responses to them. You'll likely get better responses if you ask specific questions separately and give us a wee bit more detail.

For example -- when you say you're interested in web design, does that mean you'd like to provide that service to others? Or are you interested in using those skills to build your own websites?

The more details we have, the more we can help.

    Again, welcome to the forum!

    Cheers,
    Becky

Thanks for the encouragment man! Glad to hear you're so successful, something for me to set my aims on?

Firstly, thank you for the warm welcome Becky. I'll be sure to check out the archives and the other sources you've pointed me to when I finish up with this post.

I'm really just interested in any type of advice you would give someone who was starting out. Where to begin? What type of oppurtunities should I look for? Are there certain things I should be aware of before I even step into the IM field?

There aren't really any generic answers for me, I'm interested in ANY type of input from the community here. I'm all ears.

Thank you for the warm welcome and advice Darren.

Right now I'm weighing the pro's and con's of having my full name compared to having my current one. I want people to understand that I am young and I am still learning, obviously.

I'll update you on my decision once I arrive to it.

    Thanks again, all of you.

    Hi KidKota,
    welcome to WF.

As has been suggested I would start branding yourself by using your own name. Given your past experience you are already way ahead of many people here, including me. A lot of people here, including myself, struggle with wordpress and wouldn't have a clue how to be a site administrator. So, I would suggest you offer your services, under the correct forum thread, and I am sure you will see some customers. Understand that you have the potential to keep your customers many years ahead so always focus on providing quality service.

I envy your youth and knowledge. Having Andy introduce you to the WF is sure to change your life. There are some amazing people here who will bend over backwards to help and advise...........and some who will scam you at the drop of a hat. Keep your head up and your nose clean Keep looking forward and you will achieve whatever you want.

    See you around the WF.

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply to this thread. (:

As for the name change, I'm still playing with the thought of it, I'll have a final stance on it once I progress a little further.

Onto the Wordpress oppurtunity - I actually plan on doing some work for people who need assistance with Wordpress. Right now I want to observe my surroundings and see what type of people call this place home first, afterwards I'll step up to that challenge. ;]

      Count on it.

I think having Andy introduce me to the community is one of the best decisions I've made in awhile. I'm extremely pleased with the response so far, and it's only added to my enthusiam and makes me get pumped to learn more. (:

As said earlier, I will be observant of everyone I speak with.

        Hi Dakota,

You're very lucky to find "Andy Hussong" to introduce you to this forum. The right age, right time, right person. You should thanks him for getting you into this right forum.

Sorry to hear about your life story. Don't give up. You'll feel better after you read my following statement. 63 persons of my family were murdered in a war in Asia, 1975. Every time I think about it, I cry. Life goes on. I decided to live in "reality" rather than "past". Hardship will make you grow. You're going to screw up. Don't give up.

See bad thing as a cup with "half-full" rather see it as "half- empty". This is how I live my life. It makes thing a whole lot different.

        My two cents.

Hi Dakota, welcome to the forum. Andy, that was a really nice introduction, what a cool way to be a pal.

Be aware that everyone has their own opinions, their own perspectives based on their own lives. So in everything, take what inspires you or what is useful for you, and leave the rest aside. That goes for this post too!

Information overload is a real risk here. Take some time to explore some ideas and make your own plan. You don't have to try to do everything at once.

I agree with Becky. The Mind Warriors forum is your best place to look for motivation & organization tips. I really like the TQ approach at ThinkTQ - The Energy Color. Look at the ten tips in each of these sections ("On energy" down through "On act now") and you'll have 100 great ways to inspire yourself.

For overcoming hardship, one of the very best things to do is to find interviews and biographies of people who have been through hard times. People who got through miserable situations, yet eventually they found meaning and success. I don't think we've had a recent forum about that in Mind Warriors, might be time to start one.

Start learning what other people survived, ask yourself what decisions and actions made the difference for them. If you make this a habit, you'll begin a lifelong quest that will result in your own personal philosophy of life. That's something nobody can take from you.

Mind Warriors has a lot of suggestions about organization, priorities and time management. My advice is to find the simplest possible system that keeps you from losing track of information. Then use that system to get things done, instead of trying to improve the system. Too much effort on a perfect system is like fixing up a car to go 200 mph, when all you use is for to go get the milk!

Internet Marketing has something for everyone. There are a hundred different approaches that have worked for someone! The best approach for you, however, is one you love because it uses your own strengths and interests. What do you like the most from what you've learned so far? What is most exciting to you? What are your income goals? How much time can you put in?

I look forward to seeing you around the forums!

    Chris

P.S. If you click "Go advanced" then you get a more complete post editor that lets you add smilies, different fonts, etc.

Here is my thinking, since you know wordpress and understand how to get a site online, from what I can see. I would suggest you first do the thirty day challenge, that is quite possibly the best place to start. Once you have done that, you will understand some of IM and then you just have to research and advance on the things you have been taught in the 30dc.

Also if you linger round here long enough, you will start to pick up on things, just my 2 cents.

Thanks Chris. That gave me a lot to think about.

What do you like the most from what you've learned so far? |
So far I love the fact that this entire system revolves around communication with people. I love managing online communities or simply meeting new people.

What is most exciting to you? |
Music. I honestly love how music makes me feel with whatever type of situation. I could of had the worst day ever and be steaming but once I hear a type of music I'm used to, and it syncs with how I feel I get so inspired to change whatever I'm not content with.

What are your income goals? |
Really, the experience of learning is enough for me at this point. Any type of income that can have a positive effect on my life is obviously welcome, observing my situation.

How much time can you put in? |
      24/7

Again, thanks for giving me so much to think about. I'll be posting later on reflecting my thoughts on what you brought to the table once I decide my stance on everything.

        Hi Dakota,

        Welcome to the forum.

Now that I'm getting old (just turned 40) and I've been traveling most of my life (was in the Navy for 14 years and then traveling for work and pleasure since) and been doing IM for the last 10 years - I actually feel qualified to offer you some advice.

I'm also a musician and played in a gigging band for a few years too.

        Here's my advice.

        1 - Where to start.

This is a really good question and the answer will be different for everyone, but the best general advice is - start with something you're passionate about.

To me, this sounds like music for you.

The reason I say this is that one of the biggest problems most people have is staying motivated and consistently taking action. If you're doing something you love - this is much less of a problem.

There are many ways to get started even in the music niche.

The biggest piece of advice I can give you is - find where there are passionate musicians who you can help in some way.

The way you create success in life (and make money) is by helping people - people will pay for help in many forms, especially if you can save them time or money.

In your position you probably have more time than many people who are working full-time jobs, so you can probably save people time by bringing together useful information that they'd love but don't have the time to find for themselves.

I don't know what your particular musical inclination is - but if you know any musicians in your area (if you don't - it'll be a good way for you to find some anyway) - get out and interview them, make videos of them sharing information about your particular interest (maybe warm up exercises, practice routines, mindset advice etc..)

You could start off with a blog and have some relevant product advertisements, but ultimately end up with a really cool membership site where people pay you each month to access all the new videos etc that you put together. This can be very simple and even if you just did one video a month - people will pay for that, but you can scale it up as much as your time allows. Also, when your site is busy you can charge local bands to advertise on your site and even do gig recommendations/reviews etc. so that you get into gigs for free as a 'reporter' for your site.

That's just an idea for you to play with.

        2 - Learning about IM

This is a bit more tricky - there's a LOT of aspects to IM and many of them are not necessarily going to be required by you. I wouldn't recommend that you just wander around the forum looking for interesting stuff, so my advice is to speak with Andy some more and get him to recommend which things you're likely to 'need' to get your business moving and focus on those - then as you discover you need something more - learn about that. This way you're learning about things as you need them and won't get information overload with stuff you don't need.

My guess would be he'll tell you things like - how to get a site/blog set up, use ftp - how to add a membership facility - how to use an email autoresponder, so that you can get something up and start accepting money.

        3 - overcoming personal problems.

This is obviously very personal, but I can say from experience that with every problem comes an opportunity to grow stronger. Life will always throw things at you which you can easily let knock you down - the best thing anyone can learn in life is how to keep getting back up.

Most people don't get really hard lessons and end up living a life that's unfulfilling because they've never been pushed out of their comfort zone.

Most people get to fall in love for the first time and also have that end at some point (there are a lucky few who marry their first love and stay together), so most people do understand what feeling truly bad is like, even if they haven't had what we might call 'really bad' problems of a worse nature. So don't think that if someone hasn't had your problems that they don't understand your hurt - most people do understand what it's like to hurt. If you have supportive people around you - be sure to let them help you, it makes them feel better too.

Ultimately time heals all wounds as long as you let it. Many people keep their wounds open and carry them around for many years (even a lifetime), but it's not a helpful way to deal with problems.

The best thing you can do is realise that you have to deal with life 'as it is', not as you would like it, or how you think it is - but how it really is. The truth is - you're already still standing and looking around with your head up for opportunities. That's the best thing anyone can do and it's more than many people do.

If you can create a business that you're passionate about, that helps people in a way that makes you money - go for it. That's what life is all about.

Don't let anyone tell you different.

Many people will think they're trying to help you by telling you to 'go to school' and 'get a job' because that's what they were told - the world is a different place now and you can create your own future with the people you want and in the way you want - with the ability to earn - whatever you want.

So - in summary my advice is to look inside yourself and if music is in your soul - use that to drive your IM.

Who knows - when you're 18, you might be speaking at seminars telling people about how you made your first million dollars as a teenager.

    Hi Dakota,
Welcome to the Warriors. Take your time in here there are a lot of people with solid wisdom but there are also some who are not so wise but think they are. never take anything said as "solid" always research what you are told and if it fits then APPLY it take action.

Right now as your just starting I would advise you to be specific in your purpose. do not focus on bringing a service to make money-Focus on solving a problem many people have e.g.

you mentioned wordpress there are a lot of experts on wordpress and a lot of designers who focus on bringing new themes etc. if you are wanting to focus on wordpress be unique offer something others do not. You mentioned you were a content writer that is a great service and one that is highly sought if it is high quality and unique.

The point is money will be made but if you focus on bring a solution you will gain a following of satisfied customers who will purchase from you again and again always deliver the highest quality you can too many people focus on making money and that is why they end up with a ton of projects on the go or they get overwhelmed and do nothing. if you focus on bringing a solution you can direct all your time and energy into that one thing always focus on one thing once you have success with it replicate it rinse and repeat.

Always good to see other teens interested in IM

What I'd advise is split half your time towards things that bring in immediate income (for example product sales, freelancing, when you get some capital site flipping, offline web dev marketing) and the other half towards things that will bring in long term passive income (ex list building, niche website development). I failed to do this starting out and so when I stopped 'working', I stopped earning.

Your English looks decent so you shouldn't have a problem getting clients / writing products / blogging etc. Try and learn some basic HTML skills (although assume you already have this as you know Wordpress) as it'll save you a lot of time.

Add me on Skype if you need any help, would be happy to answer any questions. Good luck!

Unlike some, I have no serious advice. At 16 (I am just 14 mentally now) I expect I will be as I am now. About the only words of wisdom apply in IM as in all parts of life.
Find what you love and try to find a way to make enough money to feed your (eventual) family with it.
I am taking my 12 yr old grandson with me to a Dan Kennedy seminar so hopefully you will have some competition. Enjoy the journey. One thing I have been developing is a passion for is young bloggers and a partner is making me look at 'young entrepreneurs' as well and is probably the direction that site will end up in. (never does any good to argue with 'em)
    Mark

PS-Never compromise your personal values for any one or anything. (I knew I could come up with advice if I tried)

Welcome Dakota, glad to have you among us.
I will second the 30 day challenge (30DC for short) as a good starting point.
I believe it is one of the best introductions to IM out there and it is
free (and you can do it in under 30 days too). This years challenge isn't up
yet but you can still go through last years challenge at Thirty Day Challenge

      wishing you success,
      Todd Sampson

Hi Dakota, welcome to the forum..

It's great to see someone getting involved with IM so early.

With a background in web design, you've already got a really good head start.

My only advice is this to help get you started: Sell what you already know.

Create ebooks, MP3s or videos that teach people your skills.
All information is valuable and all information has a price tag, even if it's second nature to you. Someone will be willing to pay to learn it.

My advice is to seek a program you think will be good for you. Make sure it has a guarantee and do like I did...explain your situation (briefly) and ask if there is any suggestions they can give you on either obtaining their product or marketing (or whatever it is you're into) in general.

Now just to warn you you may or may not get a few nasty replies, but just note that's not the type of person you want to buy from anyhow.

I purchased a $200 product that was offered specially to me for $20/month for 10 months. I almost cried. There are generous people out there and if they're making the type of money (if that's what their product claims to do) they can afford to be generous.

I just want to thank everyone for offering your guidance to Dakota. He's very stoked about getting the ball rolling, and it has, in turn, piqued my son's interest in doing the same (it usually helps to see a friend doing something, as opposed to just your parents).

    Dakota,

You ARE lucky, from an economic standpoint, etc... to be so young now. When I was your age, I was still thinking about going into electronics, and computers were fairly expensive. ALSO, computers were very limited.

When I was about 18, I went into programming and consulting. I soon after that heard about the internet, but it was closed to most people. I didn't even get onto it until about 1992. and THAT was through a TEXT terminal!

Anyway, if you play your cards right, you can avoid a lot of the dead ends. One thing, DON'T fall into the trap of shortselling yourself because you are a kid. I originally did consulting for about $10/hour. That was like 3 times the minimum wage, but less than 1/5th of the cost of a cobol programmer. Later, when I started consulting through someone else, of course I WAS much older, they charged the customer about $275/hour for my time. So find out what others are getting, and charge appropriately.

      Hey Warriors!

I've been reading through the replies and have a certain stance on where I'm going with things.

I'm focusing more on learning how to manage my time and more importantly how to manage myself. Lately I've been having conversations with Andy Henry, who happens to be a really talented life coach.

He's been helping me in certain personal areas, along with time management. Overall he's just been a really positive force pushing me towards a solid start to a hopeful career.

Lately I've been looking into certain ideas for my first project, but I'm not going to rush into anything yet. I want to take my time and get my facts straight before I make that first big step.

I'd also like to thank Andy Hussong for the inspiration he's given me. As my best friend's dad and a past baseball coach, I know him on a personal level and he's always been a positive influence and all-around just a great guy. He's given me an opportunity most don't have a chance at, and I'm going to do everything in my power to capitalize on it.

Thank all of you for sending me suggestions and comments, any of you are welcome to add me on skype and talk to me directly. I've been checking this thread every day and just now got around to writing a "valid" post haha. ;]

      Thanks again,
      Dakota Laflin
