Is the extra cost of domain protection and private registration worth it?

Just in your view is it worth it to pay for extras like domain ownership protection and private registration? I'm sort of 50/50 on it as the owner of several well promoted websites. On one hand its extra cost when it comes to renewing or registering a domain, but on the other I attribute alot of junk calls and junk mail/spam e-mail to the fact that in the past I haven't used these extras. And also I don't know if its paranoia, but I have a fear of doing all of this work to promote my domains and then having someone steal them out from under me via backordering as soon as they expire.

    Hi,

I use 1&1 and the private registration is included in the domain, if you want it.

It doesn't protect the domain if you let it expire, but with 1&1, you are on auto renew, unless you chose not to use it. It also doesn't cover if the credit card is invalid, but I am fairly sure they send you notice of this also.

    Thanks,

    John

Yes, just set it to auto-renew and you will never loose your domain. Have you heard that GoDaddy and other domain dealers are raising their prices.

These are a waste in my opinion.

Unless you only log into your account once a year my host (hostmonster) gives me notices well in advance of expiring domains.

As for the domain privacy it really isn't needed either. If you're doing something illegal it doesn't matter if you have privacy or not. The hosting company will still give up all your information to use against you in court in anyone chooses to sue you.

It's not just about preventing spam.

Some people do not want other people to know they own certain websites.

For instance, if you have many niche sites you don't want people to know they are connected to just one person.

There are other reasons, I'm sure. But mainly it is to protect your private information: where you live, phone number, etc.

I don't use either. I don't want privacy as I would rather people can contact me should they wish to buy my website. As for protection ... protection against what? Haven't even looked into that. I have too many domains to drive up the expense with the extras that I don't need.
