    Hi cellcom,

I don't know if you know what backlinks are. From SEO purposes, without them your site doesn't get good rankings on the search engines, what means you don't get ORGANIC and FREE traffic to your site.

Number of backlinks is an indication of the importance or popularity of your site. With less backlink your site considered less important and vica versa. If you have enough QUALITY backlinks then search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. will give more credit to your website.

They calculate the relevance of a site to a given keyword, and they consider the number of QUALITY inbound links to that site. You shouldn't be satisfied with merely getting inbound links, what matters is their QUALITY.

When they crawl your site, Google and others consider the content on your site to determine the QUALITY of a link. When inbound links to your site come from other sites, and those sites have content related to your site, these inbound links are considered more relevant to your site.

Otherwise, if inbound links are found on sites with unrelated content, they are considered less relevant. The higher the relevance of inbound links, the greater their quality are.

So your aim is to get more QUALITY backlinks. You can get numerous backlinks from different sources. Edu and Gov backlinks have much more authority than others. Search engines likes the 'authority' sites and give them more credit than to others. Consequently your site will earn better rankings and more FREE traffic with them.

Use the search button on this forum and you'll find many 'relevant' answer to your question.

    Hope it hels,

    Sandor

Google trusts .edu and .gov websites HUGELY.

Usually they are PR7 and above. They are long established. They are unlikely to contain crappy information.

If you obtain a link from such a website, Google believes you deserve it.

However, if the links are not obtained naturally, then I think Google will discount them in the future.

Remember, Google wants its customers, the surfers, to have an enjoyable experience, not a frustrating one.
