Are You Losing Money Because of Your Ebook Linking Practices?

7 replies
I can't tell you how many times I've clicked a link in an ebook only to find it's a dead link. If the link was an affiliate link you just lost a potential commission.

You have no control over what a vendor does, an affiliate link can go dead at anytime. That's why you should check the links in your ebooks now and then, and why you should always use a redirect page for your affiliate links because you can't recall ebooks that are already in circulation.

Using a redirect page, if the affiliate link goes dead, you can easily find another affiliate program and change the link on your redirect page, thus keeping your ebook up to date and saving your potential commission. If you were talking about a specific product you can change the redirect page to a static page and explain why you're now recommending a different product so they aren't surprised by being taken somewhere unexpected.

Creating a redirect page is easy. Just paste the following into the <head> section of your web page:

HTML Code:
<meta http-equiv="Refresh"
content="0; URL=http://www.YourAffiliateLinkHere" target="_top">
<meta name="robots" content="no index, no follow">
Just change YourAffiliateLinkHere to your actual affiliate link. The 0 (zero) in the second line tells the browser how long to wait before redirecting the visitor. I set it to zero so most of the time the visitor never even sees the redirect page. It's also a good idea to include your affiliate link on the page for people to click just in case a user's browser settings doesn't allow redirects.

I also include the "no index, no follow" meta tag to keep search engines from indexing my redirect pages. As a rule you don't want search engines indexing your redirect pages because they may be mistaken as doorway pages or spam attempts.

Hope that helps.

PS - Don't forget to check the links to your own products in your ebooks now and then too. Sometimes we rename pages for one reason or another.

    Good point to bring up Dennis. I haven't used redirects and that's something I should definitely be doing. It's something simple that will like you said save you from losing commissions.

    Excellent tip Dennis - thanks.

    I haven't included redirects in ebooks and I fully see the importance of doing so!

    Guess what I'm gonna be doing for the next few hours.

    And the problem is compounded by the fact that some PDF converters don't give you clickable links if you use anchor text instead of just the url.

    Open Office keeps them clickable... Word for Mac 2008 doesn't.

      Absolutely, Travis. If it's worth putting affiliate links in your ebook in the first place, it's worth making sure they always work. The only time I'd abandon updating the links is if the ebook proved to be a dud and it wasn't worth the effort. In that case, I'd make the redirect page a sales page for something else. No sense letting it go to waste!

      If you have the PDF's and they're not password protected you can copy and paste from them to make new PDF's. Just a thought.
