Is there a market for speaking/voiceover work?

In an earlier thread that I posted, someone mentioned "voiceover work" as a potential income stream. I am interested, as I have been told that I would have a potential in an audio field (I not only have the face for radio, I may have the voice as well.) I'd like to see if there is a marketable field for a voice, and, if so, in the IM world, how could I start monetizing it?

Thanks.

Jeremy

Absolutely. I know a couple of people that make their living doing voiceovers. Post in the Warriors for Hire, look for work on Elance, guru.com, rentacoder, etc. I think you'll find that there is definitely work out there.

Seriously? What about impressions and character voices is there a market for that? I tried to get into voice-over work years ago for cartoons, it's almost impossible to get into. I think they know they have the best job in the world and won't let anyone in.

    Jeremy,

Voiceover rates vary widely, It's best to pick a niche that you want to work in and stick with it.

I've done voice work for years, and still go back to it from time to time. I can tell you first hand that the rates are totally based on the projects that you choose to work on.

While a lot of people say you have to have a "radio voice", it is also true there is a lot of work for people who don't have "radio voices".

It IS all about clarity and getting the message across to the listener.

You can get jobs that pay $400 for 15 min of work or you can spend hours reading a small book and only make $200.

The key truly is pick an area and become the best at it.

For years my bread and butter was doing Holiday and Christmas liner packs for radio stations.

Usually 10- 15 sec clips that had the call letters or the station name and sold them to small and mid size radio markets across the US.

You'll need a little demo reel for your promotions, it doesn't have to be fancy, This is one of my old ones, I can remember when I though it was good

    Voice Over Demo

One of my friends Teri, has a very familiar voice, but only a few know where they have heard her voice before.

The answer is She's the Voice for Sprint Voice mail, its really strange to leave her a message cuz sometimes she picks up and just does the routine to see how people respond!

Yes, there is a lot of work out there for voice people.

We owned a screen printing business and hired a guy to do a 30 second radio ad. He charged $60. He had his own equipment and sent us an audio file. We gave him points to cover and he made it all come together.
If this is the same guy from an earlier thread, don't remember when, that had a great voice...it would work. Don't remember how we found our guy, though. It was years ago. Just an idea.

The best money is when you do commercials for major companies. They will sometimes do a buy out, meaning you get paid once but usually a nice chunk of change. Other times if you are a member of SAG or Aftra you can get paid for the day you work and then get residuals every time the commercial is aired. For IM you would probably just do a buy out.

There is definitely a market for voice-over talent! A really quick way to get started might be to produce some sample audio clips, put them up on simple Wordpress page and take out an ad in the Warriors for Hire section on this forum. LOTS of people check there when they need stuff done... I sure do!
