Does putting your web site URL on your car work? - Update

I asked this question a long time ago. About a year I think. I have an answer for you. I did put my web site on my car but I made one mistake.

I got between 5 and 10 visits daily depending on how much driving I did that day. If I went to work I got closer to 10 visits. If I stayed home I didn't get very much.

My mistake? I linked directly to an affiliate site. What I think I did right though was to have a domain name that was easy to remember. People remembered it by the time they got home.

I'm retiring that one and putting on a new one. Easy to remember but it won't be linked to an affiliate sales page.

Try it!

  • Wow! Great tip Ryan.

This made me think of an idea that might work well:

Put up a page just for people who see your link that has a pic of the car and some general appeal free offer. Maybe even post a reward on the car for "finding" you--kinda like radio stations do.

On the car you could put something like:

YOU FOUND THE SECRET PRIZE CAR - GO HERE TO CLAIM YOUR REWARD
    www.SecretPrizeCar.com

If your site was mobile enabled it should get a good deal of hits and possibly leads for a wide appeal consumer good.

Just a thought. Now I want to try this out. Though last year we put a grand total of 3,000 miles on our Denali. Not very wide exposure.

Good out-of-the-box thinking! It seems this could work well with the right domain and CPA offer ... thoughts?

Great Idea... I was about to reply with the mobile-enabling part and realized you included it too. Nice tip.

If you drive through areas with tall buildings with windows (office buildings, hotels, condos, etc.), remember to put your url on the roof of your vehicle. People love to look out the window and watch the cars go by. Get their attention by standing out in the blobs of solid color, and you might get a few extra clicks.

Since you have a little more real estate to work with, you can add memorability by adding a thought-provoking or curiosity-arousing question, hinting that the answer can be found on the website...

You can always put your url on a rock and dump in the middle of a deep lake ... the fishes will see it.

If fish had credit cards and Internet connections, I'd try it... Better to dump that rock where the fish actually gather, though.

I mentioned the idea because when I worked in a downtown office building before I got married, one of our favorite time-fillers (coffee breaks, waiting for meetings to start, etc.) was looking out the window to see if anything interesting was happening. One company put trivia questions and a phone number on top of their delivery trucks. Answer the question right, and you got a discount, or an entry into a drawing for sports tickets, or such. You also got to listen to the on-hold music while waiting for the contest girl to pick up.

On my first trip to Hawaii, our room didn't face the ocean. But we could look down on Kalakaua Ave (the main drag at Waikiki) and watch the traffic while watching people heading for the public beach accesses that ran between the big beachfront hotels. Saw lots of ads on vehicles for timeshares and tourist attractions/activities.

If you have a broad-appeal offer and a catchy url, and you drive through appropriate areas, why not use the dead space on your car roof to passively advertise your business?

I was giving you a hard time knowing you like to fish. That is a great idea but the only problem would be securing the sign so no one rips it off. I suppose a magnetic sign would work.

                Sorry about that, chief...

Back then, most of the signs were painted on the vehicles. Or, in the case of the delivery trucks, high enough off the ground someone would have to climb on top of the truck to steal it.

Nowadays, a magnetic sign might work. Someone could also consider one of those static-cling vinyl wraps. Down here, you see more guides who trailer their boats using this idea by getting an attention-grabbing wrap for their boat. As they drive to and from the various boat launches, they have a very large and very colorful ad trailing their vehicles...

EDIT: And I was serious about dumping rocks with my url if fish had credit cards and internet connections...

Anytime you get get your site out there for others to see is always a good thing. Even a license plate frame is only a few bucks and worth some hits in the long run.

    Much success

If ever my car doesn't work I take it to a garage.

If you are talking about getting traffic to a website, then pay someone to steal it, rob a bank and then use your car as the getaway vehicle.

Your website will get lots of publicity. Just keep the domain name short and memorable.

To get my car to work (the URL I mean) I take it to the mall parking lot or Home Depot. Just park close to have the most people walking by.

Vinyl lettering on the back window. It's white on top of the black part most windows have nowadays.

hi Ryan, great creative Idea. very brilliant and super creative. Imagine if you could scale that and get your relatives and potentially other drivers putting your website on their cars or bumper stickers. Maybe offer to pay them a small monthly fee to do so and scale up from there. Just taking your idea and trying to scale it up. keep up the awesome creativity Ryan . If we wanna make big money in 2010 and forward we definately need to think outside the box!

ZeZe's got a good point here - you could scale this out by offering some money to people who drive around with your site.

Maybe you could use some tracking code and pay them for the amount of business they send your way.

Several years ago, I paid about $2,000 to have a bunch of custom adhesive signs made with my URL on them - the kind used car dealers order. (This is the kind of thing you do when you're doing Y2K work at $180 an hour and the money's coming in faster than you can spend it.) Bright, shiny silver 3D things; clearly not just something someone stuck on the car, but a serious investment.

They ended up being a little over $60 each plus a one-time $600 charge for the molds and such; if I'd ordered hundreds at a time, the unit price would have gone way down, and of course repeat orders would have been a lot cheaper.

But to make a long story short, I had all five of my contractors stick these on the back and both sides of their cars, and did the same on my own two cars.

Since we were driving around all over the place in the Bellevue area of Washington, where people are computer savvy, I got a boatload of traffic like this. Hundreds of hits daily.

So if you're thinking of doing this, it might be worth dropping a little extra money on something more professional-looking. Someone told me recently that there was a company that did short-run adhesive signs like this, which didn't start off costing upwards of $650 for the first one, but couldn't remember the name of it.

I have decals on the back of both mine and my wifes car. I have had them on for about two weeks, but haven't really seen a noticeable increase in traffic. I figured they cost $15 a piece, they are paid for in one sale. I think in the future I might try and get something that says more than just my url.

On the other hand I paid to have my website on some coffee cups at a pretty large diner in a medium large city. They started using the cups about a week ago and I have already had close to 30 hits from it.
