New member with question about ideas for a video app

I am a new WF member and I am asking for ideas for a video app. I have read the FAQ page and I hope I am not out of line to ask for ideas, if I am I apologize. Here is my situation:
I have been in outside sales for my professional career and only recently have I become interested in internet-primarily mobile internet-marketing. I have looked into SMS campaigns, bluetooth marketing, etc.. I have a friend who developed a smartphone video app. It was originally developed for a local independent film school whereby students could upload short films to the app. The app has a button to gather emails and other user info, a button for twitter feeds, a button to link to a website, and an "about us" button as well as the videos. I was trying to think of how to brand and use the app for mobile video advertising/marketing. I thought about trying to get local retailers within a certain geographic area to create video ads to put on the app and then branding the app in their name, i.e. Main Street video ads. They could all market the app by placing signs or banners in their stores telling customers to download the app to see videos of the latest events and promotions. I don't have any real money for a marketing budget so it would be hard to do anything on a larger scale. If anyone would like to suggest more ideas for this mobile video app I would appreciate it. Thanks. John Meyer

    John,

    Welcome to the WF.

I've recently received funding for a mobile app company, and can relate to this post.

Applications are made to make things fun and easy.

With no marketing budget you have to come out with a guerrilla style of marketing. I would suggest some type of viral contest using the application. Leverage the application for X company to use to build their own reputation and presence, in return they will boost the apps presence.

    An example,

Have The X Games Contest, where you post your best moves onto the app and then people vote on the best moves within the app on their phones. X games gives a prize, like a snowboard or skateboard, etc.

The app makes it easy for the company to run a contest and build buzz

The app is given presence from the larger company.

You have to leverage your technology when you are a small.
