    Interruption Marketing?

Sorry, maybe I'm too sleepy (it's 3:30 AM here), but I'm not quite sure what you mean by this...

    A TV or radio commercial.

On the web... a pop-up window.

Marketing that interrupts what you are doing...

Flashy banners, TV adverts, radio adverts...

The annoying stuff that nobody really wants to see. Interruption marketing bites, and is going to be overtaken.

Seth Godin (The Idea Virus, Squidoo founder) is the first one I head the term from yeas ago. Like others said, it's "push marketing" where someone puts something in your face to get your attention.

An example online would be email marketing. (Check your spam folders.)

At the other end of the spectrum would be RSS technology which allows people to "pull" your content in rather than have you "push" it to them.

By the way, you can still download The Idea Virus for free at Seth's site at: Unleashing The IdeaVirus

It is the most downloaded book ever and really is the basis of all viral marketing. --Mike

      Why would it be overtaken?

Seems that as effective as it is, it's growing.

PPV (contextual). Email marketing. Media buying and banner ads. Mobile marketing soon.

Not to mention offline examples of the simplest form like a cardboard cutout of a burger when you're walking into a food court.

Wouldn't it seem a little like it's getting bigger?

  • As annoying as they are, I think Vadym is right. Interruption marketing might just be getting bigger. I see so many of those IN YOUR FACE ads that it can be overwhelming. Or even worse, I am sure all of you have encountered those see through scrolling animated ads that pop up, say for example on MSN. YIKES, you just don't know exactly where to click to get rid of it, and continue what your were doing it.

    Thanks for the link, Mike.

    Now that I'm awake...

Probably the most annoying instance of such marketing is audio/video that automatically starts when you go to a new website. I always have music going when I'm on the computer, and seeing as how my computer runs slow as it is, you can imagine the havoc this wreaks on top of the general interruption... NOTHING makes me click away faster >.<

Agree with the above, I always click away when a video starts by following a link, it's just jarring
