Go Daddy Domain Renewal and Purchase Price Increase Is Ridiculous and I'm Ticked

I am ticked off and ready to bust GoDaddy in the chops. I just renewed 4 domains:

1
.BIZ Domain Name Renewal - 1
Year
$15.17

1ARTICLEADAY.BIZ

1
.NET Domain Name Renewal - 1
Year
$13.17

1ARTICLEADAY.NET

1
.ORG Domain Name Renewal - 1
Year
$15.17

1ARTICLEADAY.ORG

1
.INFO Domain Name Renewal - 1
Year
$8.17

Everyone of these renewals made a major jump in price over last year. As I recall each one was under $11.00 last year. With all the hoops you have to jump through just to renew the domains, they should discount the offer to me.

I knew there was to be a price increase, but to jump almost $5.00 for the .ord and .biz and $4.00 for the .net is ridiculous. Where in the heck do they get off zapping their customers with such a huge jump.

This is a 66% price increase over last year. And I'm ticked.

You guys make sure you shop around for the best deal on domains.

I just got a notice yesterday, again, about 7 domains I have up for renewal in April. Mine are all .coms so they all are going to be $15 for renewing. Hopefully, I can find a coupon that will work for all of them because that large of a price increase is absolutely ridiculous.

Under the new ownership things might change, but I have renewed early several times and always gotten the advertised special price.

There are plenty of coupon codes out there that make all renewals (and new purchases) $7.49 or less with Godaddy.

I have not tried the .Biz and .Infos but net/com/org are always available cheaper than list price.

Just keep you eyes peeled for special offers. GoDaddy wants
you to renew before the time is up because if you wait
you might move to a different registrar. Thus they regularly
issue coupons to incentivize early renewals.

Now we have 3 things we must do. Die, Pay Taxes and pay outrageous Domain Renewals.

I assume the responsibility for not shopping around. I also realize Bob (CEO) and his GoDaddy have to make a profit to do business and I don't begrudge them that. But don't make all of it off me at one time.

Think about it. Multiply all the thousands upon thousands possible millions of customers that will be hit with this outrageous price increase this year alone. What a windfall for GoDaddy and Bob.

I never paid 150 for domain names, but I remember when it was $35/year 2year MINIMUM purchase for .com/.net. And why no ranges, etc? network solutions had a MONOPOLY! It wasn't until they were sued in 1999 that other places could lower prices.

Marhelper said: Ken, I thought the higher renewal fees were not supposed to take place for a few months still?
I just paid them. So if you still have the chance to renew under the old price before yours come up for renewal you might want to jump on them.

I'm also guessing that a lot of Domain holders will be letting their domains expire because of the increase in fees. No facts to back that opinion, but with the economy...

Oddly enough, though my renewal emails said the higher rates, when I went into my account to actually renew, the prices were at the usual standard rate of $10.69.

Not sure what's up with that but apparently prices change from customer to customer?

If you own a bunch of domains, you may want to consider GoDaddy's bulk pricing. For a flat annual fee, I get renewals and purchases on all my domains at bulk pricing, and it saves me a bundle every year. And, with over 200 domains, a savings of $3-5 dollars per domain is huge for me.

Just to let you boys and girls know, I called GoDaddy and they gave me a discount on my order. And very graciously reminded me to double check for the discounts.

I'm serious when I say they did not have to give me the refund for the discount, but they did so.

They also kindly pointed out why my increase was as high as it was. I had renewed last year with a special discount. which in turn meant this years renewal fee was significantly higher.

My public apology to GoDaddy and to the Warrior Forum for ranting before thinking.

I think I'll follow Judy Kettenhofen suggestion to type out my post on Notepad, give it a few minutes and then reread it and make sure I have my ducks in a row before posting it to the WF.

You don't have to apologize. They have raised their prices, not just on renewels, but new purchases as well. I was there the other day and .net's were $12.99 and .org's were 14.99. The .com's are still $10.xx. The coupon codes don't help much, since the only real discount is the .com's. The coupons for the 10% off, or even 30% off don't help much when they raise prices 50% (yes, i have some .org's)

Keep in mind, you can always change your registrar and get a better price. you don't have to stay with Godaddy. I have no doubt that their increased media exposure has played a part in the increases.

Before you buy, renew or transfer any domains ANYWHERE, you should Google phrases like, "Godaddy coupon" "Namecheap coupon" etc because they normally have discounts if you look for them. I use that method to look up ".... coupon" before I buy anything online. You'd be surprised how much you could save. I've found 50% off coupons to places like Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc.

Yea, don't apologize. I agree with your first post. I know how you feel. Godaddy is always up selling and jacking prices up. They have the branding though, so they are getting away with it. Although I do still have some domains at Godaddy I transferred most of my domains to Namecheap. The process of transferring domains reassured me I was doing the right thing. I had issues transferring a couple of the domains and Godaddy's customer service was horrible. It just seemed like they were holding my domains hostage. I had to call 3 different times. They just kept trying to sell me on discounts for me to stay, instead of helping me release my domains so i could get them transferred. They up sell the heck out of you until you try leaving and then discount everything for you to stay. That just doesn't seem like good business to me. It left a bad taste in my mouth about them. I suggest NameCheap.

I can understand them wanting to get even because you got a discount, but that hardly seems like a 'reason.'

They do seem to do a lot of cheap offers for the first year and I always thought that they must make up for that as quickly as possible. Wham!

I just moved a load of domains from GoDaddy to Namecheap. There is a special Namecheap coupon code that you can get if you have more than 50 domains, but you have to ask them to implement it on your account.

You can use there live chat option to ask for it to be applied, and just request they allow you to use the coupon code: GOLDDEAL.

The price of a domain name is peanuts. Yes, it is irtating that the price went up. But when you figure it, the cost of a domain name is chump change. I don't understand why everyone is SO UPSET over it.

Personally, I seldom buy a domain name without first checking on coupons. I just bought a .com and renewed aonther one and it cost me just over $15 for the two of them. I think it was a ten percent off coupon. I just go to Google and search for 'Godaddy coupons'. There is always a bunch of them to choose from.

But really, spread over a year, it is just over $1 a month per domain. Not too bad, really.

I have a friend who just moved into RI as well - over the boarder from CT so if she can accomidate you sooner I'm sure she will be happy to drive right on over.

There's no point in having coupons. Read the posts. People are getting pissed even though coupons are out there.

Why can't they charge the same amount as the first year price and then offer a discount with coupons instead of jacking up the renewal fees.

Shouldn't the price go down the longer you stay with them? Apparently hosting runs opposite to the rest of the business world.

If anything, whatever else happens with the rest of the business world does not

I now have most of my domains with Moniker and Namecheap, I'm very happy.

It's great if you can use a coupon but this is going to hurt them in the long as more and more people get fed up with their antics. Renewal price higher than initial purchase price, lol. What a way to screw over your loyal customers.

I have also noticed the outrageous increase and do plan to start using another registrar soon. I hate to do it since I have been a godaddy customer for years and I like staying with a company I am familiar with. But this is just insulting, it makes no difference if I can afford it or not. It's like the owner is sticking his middle finger in my face and saying pay me or get lost.

I have a couple .US domains that were just a few bucks when I got them. I just checked and they want $20 for me to renew them. Now if that turns out to be industry wide for all .US then I may stay but I don't think that is the case.

You sure you got these that cheap? They often do bulk deals buy 4 more and get it for x$'s??

Best way around it I found is buy something small say .info domain or something then stop half way though your transaction.. Boom they send you a coupon for 30-50% off

    Worked for me

I have been using my godaddy reseller account to manage hundreds of domains for years. I use my discount purchasing setting to register and renew domains for around $8 a year.

I don't jump around buying short term deals because I know the purpose of them is to get you to let it autorenew at full price (duh!) so in the long term I save a lot over those that jump around here and there at sales... and I save hundreds of dollars a year over prices at Godaddy and Namecheap... but still get the quality support and dns of godaddy...

And if you are tempted to rip on Godaddy... dont bother, I know the risks, have been domaining for a decade, and also have domains at other registrars such as namecheap enom, and moniker. My goadddy reseller account has provided better customer service, better discounts, and better features than them all.

I finally got fed up with GoDaddy several months ago. I've been moving all my domains to namecheap. It's nice to be able to buy a domain without wading through pages and pages of upsells and other miscellaneous crap. I hate it when the "big players" pull stunts like this "just because they can."

I used the code FAN3 for signing up. i remember seeing that renewals are also the same price, but im not sure as i have not gotten a renewal yet.

The FAN3 code gets .com domains at $7.49 each. Hope it helps everyone looking for a domain.

Looks like calling them up can get you a discount! im going to try that too if they charge me more than 7.49 next year.

I simply can't believe what I'm reading on this thread.

Warriors who are and have been long time customers of Go Daddy having to beg, search and scrounge around for coupons in order to renew domains at a discount because the domain host has inflated all of the prices!

Personally, I don't go 'cap in hand' to anyone. If I found myself in the predicament of many of the warriors posting here, I would simply re-new and then transfer to another less costly host, with similar facilities.

      End of story.

      Just my thoughts,
      Jeff.

Really? Uh, no - never an issue. I also happen to know others who do tens of thousands a month with Paypal and have no issues.

Please don't lump me without knowing the details of what I do.

You obviously did not read the first page. The issue was resolved and GoDaddy gave him a nice deal. I personally have never had trouble with their customer service.

Actually, a simple Google search will find you discounts and coupons every month. I also get emails from them regularly with some coupons. Wouldn't call it "beg and scrounge."

Not to mention, it is smart on their behalf to be using the coupon efforts.

Those who find the coupons get a great feeling from it. Like a treat.

It is a business tactic that seems to be doing just fine for them.

Of course, if you do not go coupon clipping in your Sunday paper and just expect to get that box of Wheaties at the lowest price when you go to the store then I don't know what to tell you. A lot of very big companies offer coupon incentives. I only wish I could find ones that do it as often as GoDaddy does.

I am not sure how many domains you have but if you have enough, you might want to look into their discount club. Break even on that should be around 20 domains and look for a coupon for that as well. If you like GO Daddy for whatever reason, look into that. Otherwise it might be best to change registrars.

I also think that ICANN raised prices overall so it will be a matter of time before all the registrars start showing up higher.

I have been using NameCheap. On my authority sites I have also been getting 5 year subscriptions. No price increases at least for 5 years. No worry or hassle to find coupons to renew. Some also claim you get a little Google love with the longer registrations.

Yes, I guess coupons are the way to go if you want to bypass their ridiculous prices. It's a good thing a lot of Go Daddy coupons are available on the 'Net.
