I was having some trouble with my blog which I asked for some help here on WF, I got some help and I went to test things out. But I think I screwed the whole thing up. I was trying to test things on a sub domain, and went to uninstall wp and install it back, but I accidentally uninstalled the wp on my main blog(the one I am having problems with), and now I reinstalled it and everything is lost. I see a backup file in my C Panel, but I really dont know what to do with it or where to move it. I dont even know if its the backup I had, or if that got deleted as well.

I have all my post saved simply on not pad, and I dont mind putting them back on my blog, but here are my questions and concerns:

I have done a lot of article submissions lately, and I dont want them to be lost(all the backlinks). So if now I republish the articles, do their url will be the same and those links(backlinks on article directories) once clicked on will lead back to them?

How about the on your site duplicate content thing? Although there are just one of each articles, but technically I have published them before, so... I hope you guys understand what I am trying to say.

I would appreciate any help, whether its doing something with the backup files, or simply republishing the articles and doing the whole thing all over again or what have you. I am really lost and need some help. Thank you guys.

Well if you've deleted your MySQL database and don't have an offline and / or serversided backup, then I'm sorry to say it's likely you're going to have to re-install everything, a.k.a. back to the drawing board.

However, if you have a webhost that automatically makes daily / weekly / monthly backups for their clients you should submit a support ticket and ask if they do.

    Good luck.

Yes I agree your web host will be your best option to restore your blog. However do take note how much information you will lose depends on when was the last backup they did. Also some web hosts like mine (hostgator) charge 25 bucks for restoring.

Well, you can't really screw it up more than deleting everything Def speak to your hosting company, ask them if they can do a rollback to a date from before you deleted the installation.

Most hosting companies do regular back-ups, both because we the users tend to do stupid now and again and also to protect themselves if they make an epic mistake. It isn't usually much of a hassle for them to restore your site from the backup, had to do it occaisionally myself, and it's definitely the simplest and fastest way to get everything back up and running and keep all the links identical if they have a backup.

It also has the advantage that they (should) know what they're doing so, from my perspective at least, it's less stressful.

Just contact hostmonster and have them restore it. Then create a backup of the files and export the sql file to your hard drive so that next time, you got a backup.

Your best bet is to start with the hosting support especially if you are unsure where to start. Contact them and see what they can restore. You still may lose some information depending on their last backup. Hopefully they are doing daily backups. I use hostgator and they restore by site once after it was hacked. Good Luck

When you reinstalled it, did you use the same database details or made a totally new database?

If you used a new one, but your old database still there, try to link your new installation to the old database...

I honestly don't know much about these things, so I dont know how it works. How would I know if I did use the same one? I mean where do I go to find if the old database is there and how do I link them?
      Thanks again.

Ok, hostmonster got back to me with this:

    Hello,
We can restore a backup for you if you wanted.
Here are the backup dates that we have.
    (Sat Feb 27 19:13:52 2010)
    (Sun Feb 28 06:53:52 2010)
Which I am so greatful for. I couldn't ask for more.
So, if I am understanding this correctly, that means that anything I have done on my blog (new posts, plug-ins, comments and etc) up until these dates, will be back on my blog just the way they were, but everything after that is lost? Right?...

If that's the case, than its great. I wouldn't mind just re-posting the few articles that I have published after those dates.

Another question I have is, do I need to do anything on my part to get things back to normal? I mean once they restore the files, everything will be just like the way it was up until those dates, or do I need to move files from A to B?
Sorry if my questions sounds so stupid, I really have no idea how these things work. Thank you again for caring enough to reply and help me. I really appreciate it.

Yep that is pretty much spot on. You will lose everything after the date they specify.

You shouldn't need to do anything else. The same thing happened to me years ago and once they restored the file all I had to do was add the posts for the dates after the restore.

I am still waiting for hostmonster to restor my files. But while I have been waiting, I have been trying to dig in and learn somethings as well.
    Here is the deal:
I remember long ago I had installed a automatic backup plug-in, and now in my public_html I see a couple of files like these:

    public_html/simplescriptsbkup_eb1JORj7_1264642249.tar
    /public_html/simplescriptsbkup_eb1JORj7_1264642251.tar
    /public_html/simplescriptsbkup_eb1JORj7_1264642258.tar
    /public_html/simplescriptsbkup_eb1JORj7_1267773690.tar
    /public_html/simplescriptsbkup_fnOf_1264642246.tar
    /public_html/simplescriptsbkup_QC3S_1264642246.tar
    /public_html/simplescriptsbkup_QC3S_1267773690.tar
    /public_html/simplescriptsbkup_xiCmCCWB_1267774144.tar

The dates on them are from a couple of months ago which I started my blog. But I dont know what to do with them or how to use them to restore things.
Does anyone know if that's the backups I need, if yes, how do I use them to restore the files. I mean what are the steps like moving file to here or there. I appreciate any help.
