I made a $17 sale and it cost me $18.50?

I sold an ebook for $17 and 45 days later the customer wants his money back.I have a 30 day mb guaruntee and pay pal gave him his money back anyway but i had already paid my affiliate 8.50 and pay pal charged me a $10 fee.So I lost $18.50 on a $17 sale. How did this happen?

Why did you have to pay a $10 fee to paypal? When i refund the money I never have to pay a fee, to be more exact, the fees that paypal took from the payment are repaid by them.

As far as im aware paypal charges a $10 fee when a chargeback from the buyers credit card company is made and Paypal refunds the money rather than you initiating the refund.

Use this for marketing education. Tweak your product and sales page, etc to increase sales.

Just about all businesses give refunds at one time or another.

The trick is to sell enough product that the refund rate is minimal. Don't be scared out of business over one sale!

Yes, refund - and next time you can even partial refund.

On paying the affiliate - either wait until the return period is expired to pay them, or make sure you have something in writing to your affiliates that they are responsible for funds returned.

Don't let something this small prevent you from selling products.

You shouldn't be. At 8.50 profit per book, as long as your refund rate is even halfway reasonable, you're still going to make money even with the returns. What you should do is make sure you have a certain amount of money in reserve to cover this sort of thing.

The affiliate may have been the one to set the whole thing up.

Why in the world blame an affiliate without even knowing about who did it !! And if the affiliate wanted to refund it anyway, why would s/he bother buying even as an affiliate !!

Join as affiliate, buy product, collect commission, charge back/refund product, keep commission.

Don't be afraid of refunds unless you find it to be an ongoing trend, and you won't really know until you're cranking out at least 100+ sales.

My refund rate is almost non existent when I count it per 1,000 sales.

Similar to your situation, I HAVE lost money on refunds, either due to paying an affiliate and then the buyer requests a refund and/or due to a rare chargeback.

However it rarely happens, and it's not worth the trouble of alienating your affiliates, who could bring you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in sales for you in the long run.

Dont pay out to affiliates until at least 30 or 45 days after sale to cover your ass for refunds. Nearly all affiliate programs do this.

I did wait the 30 days to pay the affiliate and I clearly have a 30 money back on my site! I don't know why they refunded the money...

The buyer took out a dispute, right?

In which case, what evidence did you provide to support your claim?

I've personally won disputes for intangible asset sales (even when they are credit card chargebacks and not just PayPal disputes) by simply providing proof that the buyer used/downloaded the product.

So yeah, what evidence did you give?

I would do as JonMills said and not pay the commission until the 30 days or so are up. A lot of companies pay monthly because of the exact same thing you went through. Refunds happen no matter what you do so you need to sit down and form a better plan.

Most of the comments here seem to be overlooking the fact that the person didn't ask for a refund until after 45 days had passed when the money-back guarantee was only for 30 days. He shouldn't have received a refund at all.

I agree with Dennis. If you have a 30 day refund policy, then after the 30 day,s there should be no refund. My question is more around, "Why did PayPal give the refund?"

If the buyer was familiar with eBay then they knew that PayPal buyer protection/resolution lasts for 45 days after payment. I don't believe that this is true for other commerce through PayPal but exactly 45 days just seems calculated.

did you miss the email from Paypal? normally (ok, I haven't had this for a professional account, but certainly on my private account) when there's a dispute, they will send you an email.

Mike Filsame e.g. has very clear instructions on all his sites: if you charge back and you're outside the refund period, we'll send our lawyers your way. He makes it super-clear HOW to get a refund and what the consequences are of just doing a charge-back that apparently his "chargeback" rate has gone down dramatically.

    Cheers

    Ross Writer,
You bring up a very good point...one which I've not considered as I am just getting started in this business. I understand that if you use Paydotcom, you have to pay your affiliates manually. If you use Clickbank, they pay the Affilitates on your behalf. I don't know how much control you have with Clickbank in paying say 45 days later, but will certainly look into this immediately.

I guess the other thing is to not to offer a money back guarantee?

I would like to hear more from IMers that have been doing this a long time to hear how they control/handle this situation.
