Ill Effects Of Aweber's Recent Security Compromise

Hey Warriors,

If you're wondering why your open rates have been down lately
for broadcasts you send to your Aweber list, then take a look at
this screenshot I just took of my account's bounce rate:

screenshot link >>>> 2010-03-05_1038 <<<<

You'll see a before and after section.

This is definitely one of the major contributing factors to your
declining open rates.

I would imagine with the recent hacking they were a victim of
by spammers, a lot of people who subscribed to lists managed
by Aweber have closed or cancelled the email accounts that
were compromised because of all the spam they started receiving.

I just noticed it and wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

An open rate drop of 1-3% can mean hundreds of clicks lost
which for many people who rely on Email marketing for their
main source of revenue is kind of scary.

I'm glad I figured out PPC when I did

Thanks,

Jason

Thanks for this post, Jason. It's very worrying that aweber have been hacked and I hope this doesn't spell too much trouble for all its customers.

I'll certainly keep a watch on my account there and the lists I have.

It happened a couple of months back.

Hackers stole a ton of email addresses from their Database and started sending them all spam.

Was a busy thread here on the forum.

    Yea dude same here!

For awhile I had a similar situation at Aweber. My bounce rate skyrocketed about 8x-16x it's normal rate on broadcasts.

It went on for a week or two, but now it's back to normal. Although I'm honestly not sure if that's because things are better or because they got removed from my list.

    Jason,

As posted on the previous thread, our internal bounce processing was updated
which allowed us to recognize a number of new bounce codes that were not
previously recognized. Thus for a period of time you may see an increase in
bounces until those invalid subscribers are removed. Has nothing to do with
the data hack in any way. The addresses that are being recognized as invalid
have likely been invalid for months and months.

      Thanks Tom,

Appreciate you for replying in here.

Was a strange coincidence as far as the timing was concerned so figured
I would see if anyone else was experiencing same issue.

Glad to hear those bounce rates will go back to normal.
