The Death of Email Marketing - Smart Phones

As more and more people are checking their email from cell phones and hand held devices, the game is changing.

I'm starting to get emails from people complaining that I emailed them on their Blackberry too late at night.

I'm noticing that open rates are better to smart phones because of the immediate access to email. On the flip side, I've also noticed that people viewing emails on smart phones are less likely to buy for several reasons:
  • Most sites are not cell phone ready.
  • The person is often on the go and doesn't have time to check out an offer and make a transaction. Even if they want what you're selling, they will put it off until later, but later often never comes.
  • People seem to have more confidence ordering on a computer than on a hand held device.
This is just what I've noticed from my interaction with subscribers and friends who check email with cell phones.

Could this be the death of email marketing as we know it? Thoughts?

I doubt it'll be the death of e-mail marketing....

But I do see what you mean... I've been accessing forums, Twitter, sport sites etc from an iPhone and BlackBerry while I've been on the move the last few months. I've got a laptop and MacBook with me, but when I'm busy, it's easier to scan stuff on the smartphone...

It might even cause people to sell stuff in much more streamlined fashion... creating pages/offers that are easily accessible for smartphone users.

    Peace

Possibly there will be a shift to smartphones for reading emails, but that would almost certainly come together with a shift towards smartphones for browsing the web.

People will get accustomed to it and will start buying from their mobile devices.

Not too long ago, people were generally cautious about buying things online. Now it's the most normal thing in the world. I don't see why the same couldn't happen with smartphones.

We'll probably see new kinds of website design and new payment systems specifically made for smartphones.

Definitely yeah, we may even begin to consider technology growth on the smartphones such as, your smartphone maybe ten or twenty years down the line emiting a screen in thin air , thus definitely making it more practical to work on then your collossal laptop.
I am sure one day, the kids will laugh at us for carrying massive laptops around, and they will be laughing at the mac air.

It definitely won't be the death of email marketing. I think it will be the merging of email marketing with social marketing. You can just look at what google buzz is doing (and other email programs), and see how email and social updates and communications are coming in through the same client. This client will also exist on phones and become morea and more important.

It may mark the death of e-mail marketing but at the same time signal the beginning of some new technologies that have not been developed yet. Always keep in mind that change is inevitable. By trying to hold too tightly to old ways we miss out on the new opportunities right under our noses.

Have you actually tried making a purchase from a smartphone? Hardly any web sites are set up in such a way that this works. Then there are the security issues. Most people feel, rightly or wrongly, that cellphones are less secure than their home or office computer.
