I am starting a new wp blog and need some advice on a couple of things. there is so much conflicting advice o that goes for pages and pages in a simple google search so hopefully you guys can help me. Your views would be great then i might be able to make a decision

I have a few hopefully quick questions.
1. What is a static page? And is it better to use this or a post page as your first page seen??

2. If you use the post page how many would you recommend displaying? I am thinking about 5-10.

3. if displaying posts from an seo perspective is it better to have full or summaries displaying?

    Sarah,

You will find that there are many opinions of how "Best" to set up wordpress.

I can only tell you what works for me, and my clients sites.

    Its fairly straight forward.

    Pages Vs Post?

I will have to assume you are talking about your front page.

On a scale from Product site to company / info site, The single product site I will tend to use a static page for the front page, and the posts pages to be selected by category.

With an Info / Company site, I choose to display the latest news and info on the main page so the visitors can see the site is current and on topic.

Posts pages ?? I display 5 posts on the page. It seems to work best for the overview (there are certain themes that I use when I want to display more)

Posts; Not necessarily summaries but the first few lines by using the "more" tag with the link for the whole posts (there are some SEO Reasons for doing this), but I also like to see what posts get click thru's.

And like every guideline, there are sites where I break my own rules

Static page is one that doesn't change. It shows up in your navigation bar. I haven't been able to make a first page static page work right for me. Blogs are meant to be blogs.

You can have a static post at the top of the post page. Just make it short and sweet so people can get on with reading the posts if they want to. This is where you build relationships.

To make a post static, just go in to the edit page click visibility -> public -> Stick this post to the front page. Then when people go to the first page of your blog, they see the static post first and then can read the rest of your posts.

Personally, I don't think it matters how many posts you show. It depends on how long the posts are. Make it appealing to your readers.

I show the full post. The less clicks it takes to get to your content, the better.

In WP lingo "static Pages" (always with capital P) are entries that are not part of the chronological stream of your posts...

All my wordpress sites do great no matter if they have static front page or posts on front page.

The secret is to add a constant stream of content in your blog section.

    Here is a sample:

Mp3 sound stream has a static front page and a blog component all in the one system and is getting 5,000 plus visitors a month and has a pr3.

The Im Club is nearly all pages and also does very well

How to set up your own online Business Internet Marketing Course

This is a system using all posts on the front site and also works wee.

The important thing is to work out your business process then adapt your wordpress site to fit not the other way around.
