Camtasia MP4 vs. iPod/iPhone question

I used Camtasia 6 to make a video and rendered it as a "Web" thing. It generated an MP4 file.

I have a friend who tried to watch it on his iPhone and sent him a direct link to the MP4 file. His iPhone started to load it up, then just said it couldn't play it and stopped.

Can anybody say what it takes to make a Camtasia video that can be viewed both in a regular browser (that can run Flash) and also where the same MP4 video file can be viewed in devices like iPhones?

Or do I need to render two different video files?

(What I did was put a little note in the code below the part that says it requires Flash -- the note says "To view the video directly click here" and it's a link to the MP4 file directly. But it doesn't play.)

Produce As... was set to "Web".

What other settings do I need so an MP4 file is visible in Apple products? How many variations of MP4 files are there?

I do not want to "Produce As..." iPod/iPhone video. I want it to be a Web video. But I also want people with iPhones to be able to view it without the surrounding Flash stuff that won't work in iPhones.

  • Generally speaking, .avi files or .wmv files is what you want your output video file to be. Then, you probably should be a-ok.

Ummmm.... the question is, why am I having trouble getting Camtasia's MP4 files to show up on iPhones when I use the Web settings.

Based on your answer, I assume you've got an iPhone or iPod and you watch AVI and WMV files on a regular basis with it, correct?

Firstly I would forget AVI or WMV.

Are you talking about watching the MP4 video that sits on a website using a browser on the iPhone?

Or having the iPhone just play an MP4 web video file without a browser? I don't own an iPhone but you typically need a player to play an MP4 file on any device, phone or computer.

Is the iPhone trying to open the MP4 with QuickTime player for example?

It's probably because you using, for the WEB which it not really what you want for an IPHONE or IPOD.

Make sure to just use the iPhone or iPod preset when you produce your video and then try it.

@DN: I don't have an iPhone. A friend was trying to view my Camtasia's MP4 video on his iPhone. I presume he was using the browser -- how else would he get to it on my web site?

@Rus: What I'd like to do is only render this thing once. It takes quite a while! I was hoping / expecting that just b/c the WEB render produces an MP4 file, that it'll work on other devices. That does not appear to be the case.

So the question is still ... do I need to render two different files, or is there a way to do it with just one MP4 file?

I still don't understand why the MP4 file that Camtasia produces can't be viewed on an iPhone.

It just might be the video dimensions your using for the MP4? Are you setting them to the preset sized the camtasia indicates for mobile devices?
