Help With Marketing Unique Crafts

I've finished the first draft of a website for my husband's craft business, but I'm not sure the best way to go about promoting it. This is it:

Mr. Kanji.com | Japanese Kanji Crafts

As you can see, it's not something that a lot of people would be searching for, so I'm not sure that article marketing/SEO is the best way.

We will also be participating in craft shows, which could bring repeat customers. I'll also send out press releases (esp in our area, which is a pretty small town).

Anyone have other ideas?

Thanks
Shannon

I think article marketing would be very beneficial for you, not only it is good way to build some one way backlinks but If you write articles about Japanese craft it can lead people who are interested in it to your website.

Also using craft related forums and blogs can help you to get some links and will get your website know in relevant circles.

I think the best way to go is by creating a youtube channel or similar and creating a series of how-to videos or showcase segments and try and market it on craft forums and social networking groups.

Take your videos to some specialist blogs and try and get a guest post on there to educate the readers about the new art.

To get direct sales you are probably after a different market. You can always compare your craft against some common ones to let you target people who are looking for art and craft to buy for their house/office.

I would also look into paid advertising. I would certainly give adsence a try. It would get you top of the Google very fast and it does not necessarily need to cost an arm and the leg.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I have thought a bit about trying some paid advertising, but I can't think of what types of keywords I would be trying to bid on. Like I said, it's not really something that people are searching for. I mean, would it just be "Japanese present" or something like that? "present" seems to general, but I think that people searching for something like "love kanji" are looking for images, not necesarily to buy.

Play around with Google keyword tool and Google wonder wheel, it should help you to get some new keyword ideas and give you some overview what people are looking/searching for.

    Thanks.

His work is on etsy and so far hasn't gotten many hits yet.

I haven't heard of the wonder wheel yet, so I'll have to check that out.

You will find wonder wheel if you do Google search and then on the top of the search results there is a link -Show options- and it will open up a side column and you will find wonder wheel under Standard view.

There are a lot of tricks to the trade to making Etsy work for you. You
won't have much success just listing a few items every now and then
and hoping for traffic. Sellers who list fresh stuff daily can do well.

What about some consignment samples in local Japanese markets, including "dirty" bathroom plaques? And fold-over business cards for offline network marketing? People are always looking for something novel to impress their friends with. Local media has an insatiable need for novel stories, especially stories that include highly visual content. I see celebrity in your husband's future! Good luck to you.
