Get Off Your Tail And Get A Job!

I started my book-selling activities back in 1987 while I was an inner-city public school teacher. After two years of working at writing and selling paper-and-ink books I had written I was making more money than I made teaching, so I quit teaching.

I worked from home. My kitchen table was my office. My garage was filled with shipping supplies and books. Then my basement was filled with that stuff too. I bought a warehouse with a loading dock and offices the next year.

I went to the bank and got a six-figure line of credit so I could pay my 25,000 dollar printing and postage fees every time I mailed out my 80 page color catalogs to my list of 30,000 teachers I was mailing to. I hired people and trained them.

Oh yeah, I also raised two kids who turned out to be wonderful, productive citizens who I am proud of hell of. And--I cared for my wife during those years of growing my business. She had an incurable disease and was unable to walk, talk, eat, shower, or cook for herself for a fifteen year period.

I'm not bragging, but whatever degree of success I've experienced--I've paid my dues for. It didn't come overnight and it wasn't easy.

So here comes the rant, and you knew it was coming didn't you?

I see way too many people here coming on saying they have a friend who needs a thousand dollars in the next week or whatever. They want to know how they can make it online. Something like that--you know the gig.

In the first place they don't have a "friend"--they need some money themselves and they won't tell the truth about that. The want some Warrior Forum guru to cough up their secret techniques to help them become "big time" themselves. There isn't any secret to becoming "big time". It involves hard work, sacrifice, and determination--and it takes time. Things that are unfortunately in short supply.

And if your "friend" needs a thousand bucks in the next seven days--why don't you loan it to them? If you can't afford that then it sounds like you're the one who needs to make some money.

It is an insult to those of us who have paid our dues to come in begging for secret techniques or blueprints to do that yourself. Many people here have paid dearly to make themselves what they are today. It doesn't require a college education and it doesn't require much money at all. It involves sacrifice. Yes, it is insulting to those who have committed significant portions of their life, who have made sacrifices, who have invested time in learning to make a success of themselves.

Here's the only little secret I'll give to you. Every "secret" way of making money online is available to you for free. There is this thingie called Google that is available and you can learn anything from making a thermonuclear device in your basement to making money on line using it.

So rather than come here begging for people to help you, spend the time to do some research. If you need money to get your business going then go get a second or a third job. You bet, that may involve sacrifices. But that's how it's done. That's the big "secret" to making money online. Do your homework and stop begging for help from people who have simply done what you are unwilling to do to be successful.

End of rant.

Mike, over the course of time I've developed a healthy respect for your posts, and usually open a thread if I see your name on it. I didn't know your background though, so my respect has just gone up a notch.

I don't really get insulted by the kind of threads that are the subject of your rant, maybe because I seldom bother to even look at them. It's unrealistic to post a thread like that and expect a golden egg to drop into your lap, so I don't bother with them.

Do you still self-publish print books, or are you all digital now?

Dennis, that little critter in your Avatar with you--well, anyone who loves dogs is cool in my book. Me--I've turned into a cat person. Yikes !

At one time, 5-10 years ago I had 40-50 paper-and-ink books I had written and marketed. But I sold all that off to a competitor our East. I still have the rights to two "regular" books but I don't develop them any more.

Even though I have a few niches I work in, still--most of my time and income is derived in the education-related niche.

So, after blowing a head gasket in my previous post--here is a tip of some value I hope. We all hear about niches such as weight loss, acne cures, pet training, IM, Forex... stuff like that, but here is something else.

The fastest growing "niche" out there is in online education. I don't mean getting a G.E.D., college courses, or accredited stuff like that. I'm talking about developing structured online courses for personal enrichment. Courses related to self improvement, organic gardening, personal relationships, advancing your career, raising children, improving math skills, learning computer skills, digital photography, stuff like that.

(Sorry Dennis--I'm using your post as a launching board to try to help some folks here--hope that's ok .)

So here's the skinny on how to cash in on this IF YOU ARE WILLING TO MAKE SACRIFICES!

There are something like 15,000 public school systems in the U.S. 90% of these have some kind of community non-credit, enrichment courses they offer. They usually send out catalogs to every box-holder in their district 2-3 times a year promoting their classes.

I used to travel a 3 state area doing live self-publishing programs through schools 4 nights a week, knocking down $500-$800 an evening through enrollment fees (which were split with the schools) and selling a 300 page manual live during the 6:30-9:30 presentation for $39 each. 80% of the attendees would buy one. They were GBC bound with Kromecoat color covers. I did this for two years after my kids were in college. There are some very motivated, fascinating people who make a full-time living from doing exactly this.

Fast forward to 2010. Look in any of those community education brochures you get in the mail and you will also find that they offer online courses as well. There are 2-3 main providers of such courses in the U.S. who depend on average smucks like you and me to provide course content for them.

If you have any kind of skill or interest there are likely millions of others out there who have similar interests. Contact the providers of these courses and ask about developing a course through their platform. It's not a "golden egg" and it requires work--a lot of work. My own course took me 4 months to develop and is about 90,000 words of instruction, not to mention the quizzes, tests, FAQ sections, etc. But the guidance provided is exceptional. Professional editors work with you as do graphic designers, etc.

The companies providing these courses are experts at marketing them. You develop the course and they get it into catalogs (both online and hard-copied) for you. The enrollment fees are split between the provider, the member schools and the developers. You must also spend maybe 30 minutes a day answering question posted by enrollees in your course.

Like I said, it is work--but once completed a course runs 90% on auto-pilot for years and years. Not bragging but my main course is offered through over 1,600 community education programs, community colleges, and even Division I type colleges and universities.

You don't need a degree in anything to develop a course, but the providing companies do look for good communicators with excellent writing skills. My course is offered for $79-$99 by member schools--some courses are much more expensive.

So my previous post was a little over the top perhaps. I'm trying to give back here. It costs nothing in terms of money to do this, but it does involve a time commitment and a dedication to developing quality content and a willingness to take criticism from the professionals assigned to work with you.

Again, it's about making sacrifices to achieve a goal. But the personal enrichment niche is exploding, especially with an aging population and larger numbers of retired folks with the time and money to invest in learning skills of interest to them.

I am a vile and odius creature for hijacking Dennis' reply to provide this info. It is an interest of mine and perhaps others can profit from the concept. Hope so . --Michael

We have a cat too, but she doesn't like to pose. She doesn't like to be held. She only likes to be touched when she's in the mood. She was a stray I rescued from a freezing November rain as she was meowing from our back yard, but she took to my wife and snubs me even though I'm the one that rescued her. Oh well, the dog likes me best and my wife is the one that rescued her from the pet store.

Hey, it's YOUR thread! No problems.
You don't need a degree in anything to develop a course, but the providing companies do look for good communicators with excellent writing skills. My course is offered for $79-$99 by member schools--some courses are much more expensive.
So true...I have no degree but college students have been learning web design from one of my three books since 2001. I've probably written my last one though. It doesn't pay as well as simply making ebooks on niche topics, and it takes a lot more work to write. My biggest ebook is 144 pages, my last print book is over 500 pages.

I'd be interested in learning more about getting hooked up as a content/course provider like you mentioned. Is that an even three-way split? Beats a 10% royalty with a 5% bump after 10,000 copies. Do you have any more information on this or resources you can point me to where I can learn more?

I did an online course to see how it would go. I offered an ad lib course where students could watch me create a new product from scratch. Sold out in about 20 hours. I offered thirty places at $77 a pop. Needless to say, I'll be developing that course further and other courses as well. No more ad lib stuff though, that added unnecessary difficulty to the process.

P.S. Ya know what they say, "the only one not learning is the one who's talking." Gads, that's me!. I'm going to shut up and try to learn myself. And thanks for the comment Dennis. I feel exactly about what you post on the Forum here as well as do many others!
What a lot of people that don't write to teach don't realize, is that you learn a lot by teaching as well...and thanks for the kind words.

I offer my course through Education To Go which is actually a subsidiary of Cengage Learning (that's where the checks come from).

          http://www.education2go.com/

Prowl around a bit. There is a link to a page of probably 50 courses they want to find people to develop right now! That's not to say that courses on other topics won't fly.

They are very selective. The majority of applications for courses are turned down. Indeed, my course application was rejected first time through but they asked me to rework it and re-submit. That was 5-6 years ago when I started with them. The second time was a charm.

I won't discuss financial details because you sign a non-disclosure agreement when you get on board with them. But that info is provided at their site or when you get accepted. It's not a get rich quick thing--when you start out you will not have many schools carrying your course, but as the months go by you will get more and more. They are top-notch, professional people and the company is a class act all the way.

Good writing skills are imperative. That's the deal. It's a lot of work but worthwhile in the end from my standpoint. That's about all I can really say about it. --Mike

              Hi Mike,

Thank you. Though I certainly wasn't demanding -- or expecting -- any sort of apology. Nor did I mean to humiliate you. I just wanted to offer a different perspective, that's all.

The WF has been a tremendous source of education and help to me over the years. I know exactly what you meant in your original post -- and I agree with it.

I've found that when I needed help, if I showed that 1) I wasn't just asking for a handout or freebie and 2) showed that I was willing to work towards my own success, the Warriors here were more than helpful and generous. And I know many, many Warriors here will agree with me.

Thanks again though for sharing the information on your business. I greatly appreciate it! Really!

Interesting post Mike. Recently I began researching e-learning, something I thought would be replacing membership sites as a hot commodity in the future. I was shocked to find e-learning was the wrong word to use and I found myself a stranger in a strange land indeed.

An entire world of terms, names and acronyms that I'd never heard of and, judging by the quality of sites and content I found, a market much deeper financially than Internet marketing.

I sniffed around for a few days but carefully backed away realizing this was not what I had in mind when creating e-learning, or perhaps more accurately, fixed term membership sites. It was way deep, even complex.

I think what you describe may be part of that world and your post has now raised my curiosity once again. Perhaps I will sneak back and cautiously approach once more.

Do you know of a Canadian equivalent to Education To Go? Thanks Mike.

I do not David. Ed2Go offers courses through, oh maybe 20-50 Canadian schools though. But it doesn't matter where you live to teach and facilitate courses with them anyway. It's not an "American thing" they just want good people. --MIke

Unless you are physically unable to work for whatever reason, there is no reason anyone needs a handout. I know there are circumstances that happen in life that are beyond our control, and I am not talking about that.

I'm just saying...there are ways to make money fast, but walking into this forum and expecting to get the magic pill to get $1,000 fast is not likely going to happen. Newbies probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than making $1,000 fast.

If you really need money fast, take a low paying job that no one else will do. Go deliver pizzas for immediate cash. Go and wait tables at a restaurant. This is a lot easier than trying to make a thousand dollars online as a newbie.

Mike, great idea. You have shown us a goldmine.

What you have outlined for people is a sure-fire way to long-term residual income. Almost a hundred years ago, in 1912 ( No,I wasn't around back then - geesh.) Dale Carnagie started his self-improvement, personal developemet course. It still produces money today - a lot of money.

The Cincinnati public school district runs a series of vocational schools scattered around the city. In the evenings the schools offer much of the same course material to the public as adult education courses. Many of the courses are for self-improvement, and they are popular.

Thanks for sharing the information about your self-publishing and marketing experience, Mike.

I, too, get tired of people coming here asking for a handout, but as someone who just lost her job and is currently looking for another one, I found your initial subject line and post offensive. VERY offensive. I'm in a very scary place right now. I've got NO income at the moment, not even unemployment. (My claim has been delayed and will probably be denied.)

However, I DO agree with the reasons for your post. I've been one this board a number of years and am sometimes more active than others. However, I've NEVER come here looking for a handout and don't expect one now. (Do a search on my posts.) My father has been self-employed his entire life and I've seen firsthand just how much WORK and dedication it takes. You're right: success is hard work and there are no shortcuts.

(Well, actually, online marketing is it's own shortcut. Things are much faster and cheaper online than in traditional business avenues. But it comes with it's own price: the learning curve is steep.)

Thanks for sharing your own business experiences. Your initial post is a little less offensive after sharing that.

      Thanks,

        Hi Michelle!

I do have a short fuse on some things sometimes; It will be my undoing. I understand exactly what you are saying and your situation. My comments were certainly, certainly not directed at anyone in your situation!

There are tons and tons of good and decent, hard working people who are going through tough times right now through no fault of their own. I certainly wasn't directing my comments to any one like yourself and I should have tempered my remarks with a little compassion.

I guess my post was directed more at other posts, and we see them all the time, coming from people who I believe are unwilling to give before they get. I think that strikes a nerve with a lot of people here and I was on one of my patented, out of control rants which I do sometimes.

Michelle, I feel bad inside because I know my words upset you. But here is my position. I'm going to consider you a dear WF friend and I will pray for good things to come your way. Hope my apology is accepted on your end--sorry for the hurtful words. --Mike

You've laid out a blueprint for many to follow, including myself.

I make good money yes, but it certainly wasn't as easy as I
imagined it what I first started a few years back.

It takes a certain amount of maturity to do this business, and
I had to mature myself before I started to take this seriously.

It's like that with any business. People assume just because it's
the internet, it's "easier" than a brick and mortar business.

I'll be the first to say it's not. There's more leverage which can
bring more money, faster - but it still doesn't mean it's easier.

Takes hard work to not only learn how to create value, but you
can't forget there are actual human beings on the other side of
the screen - so you still need to build relationships, and you need
to understand the value of marketing.

    And that...all takes time.

Some get it faster than others depending on past backgrounds and
current mindset, either way, it's a unique experience for all of us -
for all of us there was a learning curve involved we didn't see coming.

yeah these posts are getting pathetic and bringing this forum down.

And if your "friend" needs a thousand bucks in the next seven days--why don't you loan it to them? If you can't afford that then it sounds like you're the one who needs to make some money.

Mike and Nightengale have illustrated both sides of the spectrum. There may even be another side. What about those who have tried for years doing research and tried different things but still have not yet experienced success. The good thing is they haven't given up. The point where I disagree with Mike is when they have tried on their own and are now asking for help to bring it all together. They maybe able to offer something in exchange for the help they receive.
So Sloanjim the comments are not pathetic. What forums do is bring up topics of interest and then various opinions are shared which helps us to see not only one side of the coin but all the other sides we may not have considered otherwise.

A lot of these secret seekers forget that there is actually a story behind the story.

Those people that made thousands in just a few days most certainly paid their dues with learning learning learning and then applying applying applying and then perfecting perfecting perfecting... until finally... cha-ching!

      Miss Darling...

Exactly! After 20 years, they're an "overnight success." Or so say people like Dan Kennedy.

We all hear sayings like "There are no shortcuts to success" and yawn. These old axioms are true, but so well-worn that they've lost their impact.

A mentor of mine said it a little bit differently and I really liked the way she put it:

"Success is not for sale." In other words, there's no discount on success.

I liked that and it really stuck with me.

    Hi Mike and All,

This is my first post on this forum and I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your post. I am just now getting interested in getting a business going online. I have a regular job P/T outside the home.

Your post reminded me of something someone told me long ago...no matter what business you are in success only comes to those who work at it. Thanks again for sharing.

    Your story is inspiring.

Great post man, you speak the truth. Its about time that people realize that theres no magic bullet out there. It sucks that the wso section, at least the people writing those thread titles, like to perpetuate the whole magic bullet mentality.

There isn't any secret to becoming "big time". It involves hard work, sacrifice, and determination--and it takes time.
    Amen!!

The problem is that (IMHO) many people see IM as something mysterious where "i only need a computer and then i can easily make lots of money with no work"..they come here on the forums and have only vague ideas, low motivation to actually DO something and HIGH unrealistic expectations. And this is the wrong attitude in IM!
