Demographics of IM. How old is the average Internet Marketer

Been wondering something because I am encountering a HIGH level of immaturity in IMers
(not all). How old is the average Internet marketer or person that wants to be? How many are married? Have their own family? Kids? Ever run any business?

I'm sure age really doesn't nail it but its a place for me to stat looking at stats that might help me . I don't think I have encountered as high a percentage of people that want to run a business by pushing a few buttons as I have anywhere. Most business people I have met before are very pragmatic. They accept realities of business not try to pretend they aren't there.

Is there anywhere I can look up that kind of info? I don't know that I will ever be able to wrap my head aroung that mentality and wonder if theres a more mature segment to be working with? Thanks

I don't think there's going to be a collection of this data, maybe on this upcoming Census there will be a "Internet Marketing" category. I'd say that it varies but mid 30's would be my guess for average age if I had to pinpoint one.

I'm 19 and started when I was 17 with 2 other marketers of the same age.

I don't know the average age though.

I am not sure if there`s such data collected... I think the average is no more than 25 years old. And I think only older huys, like 35 years and more, are making IM as a business. Just my opinion.

  • I think this is going to be a tough one to pinpoint. I recently read in another forum, that there are more and more teens joining the internet marketing frenzy. Truth is, age has nothing to do with maturity and professionalism. SURE, time spent studying different trends, and doing business gives older, IMers an upper hand. At the same time, I think the internet lends itself for more scammers and dishonest people, and I think that as time progresses we will see the FTC taking more and auditing internet businesses and entrepreneurs who have ventured to doing business online. Therefore, although I do agree that there are a lot of immature people doing internet marketing, I can not assume it has to do with age.

I'm going to disagree with that somewhat. You CAN have some very mature teenagers but for most of us there are some moments in our life that take us to another level.

Getting married is a maturing experience and in our (western) culture you don't do that at 12.

Having your first child can be a big maturing moment. Graduating, living on your own. These are all age related experiences that mature us.

I'm not saying that Age is the sole determining factor and God knows there are people who go through all those experiences and still don't grow up. I'm just saying that if I walk out to my park and pull a teenagers off the court more of them will not be ready to run a real business than will.

And most of them are men...

    Hi Mike,

I think the reason for this widespread "push-button-start-a-business" mentality among internet marketers is that a lot of the IM systems and blueprints (even from well-known gurus) promote precisely this kind of thinking.

How many sales letters have you read that starts off with "Make $10,000 In Just 4 Days With No Money And No Experience! Just Follow Our Step-By-Step Magic Push-Button System." ?

They don't talk about the realities and problems that a business usually go through before turning profitable.

As I can see - there are many young guys in IM business (at least by their pictures on e-books with "brilliant" IM ideas).

I don't know the average age, but I'm 18. My first experience with internet markting occurred when I was 15. Nowadays, I earn a full time income online.

Had my first brush in my early thirties and walked away after a couple of months. Now 45 been marketing for three months and making some money already.

I think it's just a case of unrealistic expectations that causes most to fail and the open mindedness of youth that brings so many young people in.

Mike, the general demograph for the IM crowd is between 18-55, with more focus on those in the 30-45 range.

This push button mentality your are speaking about is from the crazy marketing of the gurus in the IM niche.

MOST IM products are marketed as:

    Magic bullet
    Copy and profit
    Push buttons and do nothing

In reality, none of that stuff really exists in this day in age.

Sure, there are easy ways to make money online. However, ALL of them require work.

As for the most mature sector of the IM market, warrior forum is where you will find the most mature users.

    My 2 cents

thats what I was afraid of. Yes there are some very mature marketers And some of them are quite young but sometimes......It just seems the unrealistic people outweigh the mature ones at least 4 to 1

and just to clarify when I say mature I'm not talking age now

If you're looking for ideas on a product to market to a specific age group then I'd just focus on one set of people. If you think the younger crowd is too immature and not focused then don't create a product that would entice them or use younger language in marketing. I think the way you position your product and how you are advertising is going to have big effects on the customers you'll receive. For example, for Facebook advertising you can choose age groups and married status, etc. Otherwise, you can use photos on your page of people in that target age group or use more mature language and speak to that stage of life specifically to one group of people in the IM niche.

In the make money online component of IM I would think that its the young crowd trying to sell to the young crowd. Once you've been around a few years you tend not to believe the hype. You can make things easier but $10,000 in 10 days. Seen that promise broken too many times

I am currently 18 but I started when I was 15 just messing around with making sites. I got serious the last year or so and I now own my own business. My business is in the forex niche as I want to study finance in college. I help people get better at trading with a membership site which brings me in a good amount of money each month, definitely more than a high schooler knows what to do with!

If you have buyers in the market, you can profile
them and get the demographics. I think you'll be
surprised in what you find... because it will probably
be radically different from what you'd think.
