How My First EVER Cold Call Turned Into A Sale - For Offline IM'ers

Here's a story about how the very first offline marketing cold call I ever made in my life turned into a $2500 sale (as told to a popular offline guru from the WF):

Yeah, I sold a $2500 online marketing package (with additional monthly fee) to a small business (xxxxxxxx niche.) I sell pretty much exactly the same type of services you are discussing in your webinars. I also do some non-online marketing consulting as well.

Yeah, the key to the cold calling thing is you're selling an appointment.

Very simple to do. Dial the phone, and then get straight to the point.

*Ring Ring*

I said, "Who is in charge of marketing?" She said, "Michael, let me forward you to him." I said, "Thanks." lol

Then I asked Michael questions about his website. He said, "Perfect timing, I was just thinking about re-doing it." Bingo.

I found one key that seemed to help was saying, "I own a local company, we do online marketing, I'm just over off of Broadway St."

It works. All you gotta do is make the dials and try to be helpful.

Honestly I hate cold calling, but I did it to get started, and I always have that ace in the hole. I'm kind of an introvert, so I really had to gear myself up to make calls. But I developed some very useful mental techniques for getting over the fear.

good point, too many people try to focus on selling over the phone. We like to operate locally as IM consultants so we can meet potential clients. An appointment gives you a chance to read body language and react better.

I don't really understand what exactly you're trying to say with this post.

"Cold calling works?" (Yes it does, but your "story" is difficult to follow)

It seemed self explanatory to me:

be brave and pick up the phone and make those calls

keep it direct and to the point

emphasize the fact that your a local business person.

There's 52 cards in the pack, our job is to find those 4 aces! month in month out...

Yeah, I just thought it was a fun story that illustrates that cold calling works and it's not rocket science. You can even succeed on the very first call!

Just a quick & friendly story, sorry if it was hard to follow.

    Music City Copy,

    Congratulations!!!!

Was the $2,500 upfront money (set up fee) or money paid for what services? How long did you meet with the Marketing Director? Did you get the $2,500 on the first face-to-face meeting or a subsequent meeting?

I'm asking these questions because it helps me better understand and anticipate what may occur or what to expect -- which lessons my anxiety when I go out to get my first client.

Have you completed the work yet? If so, how long did it take you? Thanks!

It was $2200 up front. I vividly remember the day I scooped up that check, because I got another check that day too. My first $5000 day. It felt awesome.

    Congrats, Great job!

I always remember someone in sales telling me you can't make a sale until you have an appointment and you can't make an appointment until you make a call.

  • Second what Mr. Goof Off said. It's amazing that someone with IM skills would just leave all that money on the table, but many do. Thank goodness -- more for me!

Good on you for taking action and nice story.

If there is a key it's more likely that you got in touch in some way with someone who could hire you.

The more you do of that the better your chances are of getting lucky and getting hired.

The method you used really wasn't optimal and most of the time you'd get shot down but it really doesn't matter a whole lot.

The person who contacts a lot of business owners in a poor way will still get a whole lot more clients than someone who doesn't contact anyone.

Many people are so scared of talking to business owners or calling them on the phone but other business owners do that all the time when they have something valuable to share.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

Yes! That's the beauty. If you are broke (from WSO's, lol) and you can't afford anything, all you need is a telephone and some time.

Everyone always preaches to build a list using certain criteria and tons of research. But if you're desperate, just grab a phone book, a piece of paper and a pen. It freakin' works.

Be a "real person" and be playful and friendly. Offer as much free help over the phone as you can. Then ask for an appointment.

Make it fun. Think to yourself, "Hmmm, I wonder which ornery goat is going to be on the other end of the line THIS time."

  • Call twenty prospects every day and you'll get a sale every two days -- if you're a really horrible sales person. If every sale gets you a gig worth $2,000, you will make $200,000 a year -- taking Fridays off. If every gig leads to a client paying $30 a month in recurring costs (hosting and whatnot)... well, do the frickin' math.

I know your feeling you felt form that sales because Cold calling or telesales can be a hard game to do if your attuide is not correct or your focus on just closing on sales without overcoming the objections from customers who have their guard up,

When i used to work in Client retentions For a major mobile phone company over here in the u.k some days when i never closed a account or retained a customer i felt like my world had ended and just wanted to run around the building screaming at other people ,But i never did and just carried on because the rejection started to spark more confidence to carry on and i enjoyed your story its the same with internet marketing or anything in life you have to keep going to get the results.

well done keep up the good work.
