Twitter: Thank You For Following Me... [short Rant]

Ok, so now I'm getting about 7-15 followers on twitter everyday, (no idea from where. )...

I've got a *Problem* with almost ALL the people that follow me.

They seem like freaking spammers!

Yep. Whenever I see an email in my inbox saying "John Doe is now following you", I open it, click the name and follow them back.

5 minutes later, like I said, from almost ALL of them, I get a short "personal" message from That Person saying something along these lines:

"thank you for following me, get a special offer on my ebook here......"

Yeah huh?! Imagine getting 30 of them in your inbox every single day?!

Now I know that you can probably just go to your twitter setting and choose not to receive notifications, but that's not the point.

The point is,

a word of advice:

Please don't Spam the heck out of your followers with your little messages with all those links to your "secret" offer page.

whenever I see this, just pisses me off a little.

    Jose,

I agree with you although I handle followers a little differently.

After receiving two or three "follow" notifications I'll go to the new followers' profiles and see how they post. I may also look at their sites if they're listed in the profiles.

When I see a follower who's every twit contains a "buy this" link I'll, with but a very few exceptions, decline to return the follow. Additionally if I see something to make me think the person is majorly whacked out I also ignore them. One or two I've actually blocked.

Everything I read about twitter, including Dana's excellent report, says follow everyone following you. That's certainly a great way to gain followers but if we have no common interests what's the point?

    Just my thoughts,

    Elmer

PS. My note to new followers is a simple, linkless, thank you.

Or just a simple thanks would be sufficient! That's how I have mine set up with no buy now urls!

I do not send out thank you DM's with special reports, but I do give a link to my blog.

Basically the direct message is worded like this...

Thank you for the follow. If you'd like to know more about me you can check out my blog at...

To me this is just an introduction. I'm saying hey how are you doing, here is what I'm all about.

Shannon I understand that but there are just so many that send links to salespages.

        That's what I'm talking about.

I have a DM with a link to my blog. It's a good way of getting to know me and it's not spam. Do you consider auto responder messages that you opt-in to as spam? No. You don't like the message opt-out or un-follow, That is what I do. It's takes three seconds. If you're following other marketers it makes sense that they try and brand themselves. I have three twitter accounts one is for non-business and that one I don't have an automated DM.

It's funny that us marketers get so upset about being marketed to. Me included.

When I get a new follower the first thing I do is to go look at how many people they are following. If they have a few or none I take a close look at what they post to see if it has any value to me.

If they are following hundreds or thousands I don't waist my time following them. Good old common sense would tell you something is wrong here.

Thank God I don't really get spammed yet. But when I see a John Doe is following you on Twitter I just take a look at the page and profile. if it looks too much selling I just don't follow them back. Too much talking about sometimes nothing.

I get on their and people are just talking about all sort of stuff. I say to my self, what are they doing!

Just curious, Jose. Why do you follow them back without first checking to see
if you really will gain something from doing it?
