What are the best ways to find good affiliates?

I am new here so I hope I can start a thread asking this questions...

I am in my final stages of my product launch and I am looking for solid affiliates. I am releasing an "athletic enhancement" training dvd targeted to the sports/athletes niche. Let me know if you guys have any good ideas...??

So far I have created a pdf file which explains my company along with a brief description of the product and what it's geared to do. I've also listed the commission I am offering, along with money bonuses and prize giveaways for certain sales marked reached. Let me know what you think.

May I suggest providing articles and banners? Many affiliates will use them or base their own campaigns on them.

Ya I have articles, and I am going to be creating banners for them to grab. what type of articles do you think would be best? Are you talking like a press release?

The more options the better, I think. Press releases, email marketing samples, and three or five articles for bum marketing.

The Pareto Principle applies to affiliate sales: 20% of your affiliates will make 80%/90% of the affiliate sales, and the other 80% of the affiliates (who want banners, articles and that other stuff) will make only 10%/20% of the affiliate sales. Don't focus your efforts on the desires of the less important but much bigger group. It's your business and your income, not a democracy.

Here's a list of the main things which, IMHO, professional affiliates care about (note that articles and banners aren't on the list at all because those who want them will want their own for their own lists and their own purposes, and probably not use yours at all):-

        1. No leaks on the sales page

        2. No ridiculous hype or deceptive tactics on the sales page (nothing obviously non-FTC-compliant, no phony urgency/scarcity, nothing clearly deceptive/dishonest, no credibility-losing claims, no income-claims, no cancer-curing or otherwise implausible claims)

        3. No pop-ups/discounts

        4. Sales-page looks to them as if it will convert their traffic well (obviously subjective and not entirely reliable, but they can tell whether it's "professional copy" or "home-made copy" - and they don't care about anyone else's traffic so "overall conversion rates" aren't really relevant to them, not that they're ever reliably available anyway)

        5. A good product (they don't promote anything without seeing and assessing it themselves, obviously)

        6. Good vendor reputation/attitude/behaviour

        7. Reasonably high earnings per sale (75% of small amount, 60% of medium amount, 50% of larger amount etc.)

Sounds pretty reasonable. Thanks a lot.

    Alexa rocked it for you.

To throw in my two cents, build relationships.

Good affiliates will expect the marketing stuff (banners, email copy, etc.) that you say you have or will have.

Along those lines, creating emails they can copy/paste are good too.

Back to the relationships thing - a shotgun approach to trying to catch affiliates may yield you some producers, but as Alexa points out in her post on the 80/20 rule, you'll get a bunch of them that don't even promote at all.

Building relationships helps ensure that people will promote because they are working alongside you. It also lands you bigger and more effective affiliates in your niche(s).

    All success.

Go on clickbank or do some googling and check what is promoted most.

I hate to say it, but there are TWO MAJOR factors which usually will attract affiliates:

*) PAYOUT. The pricier the product, the more people will jump on this. See how many people jump on this high value training courses for $495++. Everyone wants a piece of this, and this is what attracts many affiliates.

*) Reputation, Who is making the product, Success of previous products from the maker.

If a product has proven to sell well in the past its almost a given that the "new" product by marketer X will automatically attract many affiliates, especially again if the new product will also promise high payouts. I am not talking about $30, but the high value stuff again.

*) Yes, the other stuff like Alexa mentioned, like affiliate and promo material, quality of product and so on. But i REALLY think that many people just see the $$$, so the potential profit is the biggest factor, regardless whether the product is really "high quality" or not.

      Hey Twice the Speed,

There's already some great info posted on this thread so you're off to a good start.

To get people to promote your product(s) you have to make it easy for them to do so. If they have to create their own promo materials for you they won't do it. So you definitely need a quality Affiliate/Partner Center.

The next thing you need to do is reach out to them individually on a personal level. But do it in a no-pressure way.

Finally, you have to be persistent. One email or phone call is not enough. Usually the "Rule of 3" works best.

      Hope this helps.

      See ya!
