Your Favourite Email Checking System? (the future of list building?)

Hi Everyone!

I have been wondering for a while - how do people prefer to check their emails.

I have a sneaking suspicion that some email systems and devices put the receiver in a different mood.

For instance, if you are running Outlook 2007 - I think you will treat the email a little differently than Hotmail, simply because there are different distractions.

When we move onto smartphones, such as the iPhone, there is nothing to distract from the email. Heck, not even 'to do' lists or tasks!

Personally, I check most of my emails in the morning and evening on my iPhone.

The rest of the time it is Google Apps or Yahoo Zimbra. For some reason, I click less on marketing emails in Google Apps than in Zimbra.

So, I'm guessing emails read on my iPhone get more sales from me.

Looking to the future though, if emails go more into the cloud and onto mobile devices, how does that affect sales.

After all, people are most likely to click a link whilst reading, not when they get back to their desk.

Client (versus) cloud email, is often more persistent (I've found) simply because it is always there. With cloud based stuff, I simply don't always have the browser window open.

Right now, how many of us are designing sales pages, squeeze pages and offers for cloud based email readers and more importantly mobile readers?

I know it might not seem important, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the email reader type effects the conversion rate. With mobile email, that must be quite extreme.

For instance, Kern sends me an email about the four day cash machine. I've already got it, so not too bothered but let's pretend I was interested.

I opened the email on my iPhone (open rates on this thing must be higher) - however, I click through and the darn page has flash video on.

Now, I know I could think - I will check that out on my computer - but realistically, it must lead to huge attrition rates on the device.

Are any of us ready for the next stage in email marketing I wonder?
