I've recently conducted a survey and had some giveaways that were part of it. In the survey the person had to provide an email address, but not a full address. I've sent an email notifying the winner (random drawing), but haven't gotten a response.

What do you do when you can't contact the winner for a giveaway?

  • I suggest sending another "Friendly Reminder" email. If the person then does not respond, there really is not much more you can do except, move on and forget about it, or choose another winner. The person might have given you a wrong email address or made some sort of typo. It is their loss...

If you did your giveaway with rules and regulations, then one of the conditions is usually that if you can't reach the winner then the prize goes to someone else.

If you didn't have any rules - then you should resend the email notifying them of their prize, put a deadline in it for them to respond, and state quite clearly that if they do not respond as instructed by the deadline then they forfeit the prize.

Then go back and award the prize to someone else who entered, and be sure to give them the same speil about a deadline for response.

    Good luck.

Did the email bounce back as undeliverable? If not, the person may not have gotten it yet. How long has it been since you emailed them? Maybe they're on vacation.

Of course, with all the hair trigger spam filtering it's also possible your email could have been eaten somewhere along the way.

    Two things you can try:

    1) Send an email with a minimal amount of words so there is less chance of triggering spam filters. You can also use Sitesell's free spam checker to check the likelihood of your message getting through: SpamCheck

    2) Send an email with a bunch of extraneous text after your real message. The extra text, like a fairy tale or some other story, dilutes any potential spam filter trigger words.

If after a reasonable amount of time goes by, pick someone else. That's what I've done in the past with unclaimed prizes after 30 days.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
