What blog site do you use?

Hello,

My interest has been peeked by a WSO, and I'm waiting on the information to arrive. In the mean time, I'd like to start getting things set up for when I do finally get the info. My question is, which blog to you prefer? My niche will be online dating - nothing pornographic.

Thanks,
Pickoshe

If you're asking about blogging platforms, wordpress is one of the best. It is what I use for all of my sites.

I you use Wordpress, make sure you buy your own domain name and hosting and install Wordpress there.

DON'T use the free Wordpress.com - they don't allow commercial blogs.

As the others said, Blogspot is also excellent - it's free and they do allow commercial blogs.

There are lots of other free blogs, including weebly, hubpages, squidoo, webs.

Wordpress. Wordpress without a doubt. Get yourself a hostgator account for $10 a month and build some wordpress sites.

It's SEO friendly, free and has tons of add ons you can use. It really is a gift to those starting out.

Just to clarify one point for newbies. A few posters have said "blogspot" - this is found at www.blogger.com and creates free sites that are yoursite . blogspot . com

These are ok to get started but Google can and does close these without warning so hosted Wordpress gives you complete control

Best reason for using Wordpress is the range of plug-ins. You can make your blog work like a forum, like a shopping cart, like a directory, etc. You just have a lot more flexibility to change things as you go along.

I wouldn't go for Blogger - if I want to start a serious blog that my income will depend on. It's so easy to flag and report your blog to Blogger/Google and you're basically done. It's not worth going through the hassle of re-storing the access to your now deleted blog.

I've had several not spammy blogs there and without any reason they were taken down. So you can avoid this... self hosted blogs. And preferrably WP blogs.

    Hi,

Currently, I am using Blogger, but I am working on self hosting blogs on one domain. When I am ready, all my Blogger sites will be moved.

    Example: (Not a real site)
http://www.mysite.info--this will be used as a directory for all the blogs
    http://dating.mysite.info
    http://looseweightfast.mysite.info
    etc.

This is just an experiment to see how it works. I'm hoping it works well. After all, ezinearticles and blogger had to start somewhere.

The most flexible is your own copy of wordpress on your own server. Dont go for things like wordpress.com as they will just delete your account when they see commercial content. Other providers do allow commercial content, but if in doubt ask before commiting time to creating an account.

      Everyone,

Thank you all for so much information. It's a really nice breath of fresh air coming to this forum. I'm certainly not used to so many helpful people! I appreciate it very much ;D.

I have another couple of questions now though .

For forums, there are things like Poweredby mybb, phpbb, vbulletin etc. Is WordPress a pre-made blog type of template, working similar to the BBs I mentioned above?

I already have a hostgator account, it comes with cpanel, but they have limitations on what type of material I can have on my site. I'm afraid I don't know anything about being a host of my own site D:, though I'm very interested in this. I imagine it would be a nightmare without cpanel though, am I wrong?

      Thanks again!

    Hi pickoshe,

Focus on ONE thing at a time.

Get your blog done. Then move to the next - your forum. Don't try to understand and do everything in the same time. You will end up not doing any of them
    ===============

Is WordPress a pre-made blog type of template, working similar to the BBs I mentioned above?
Sorry, this just doesn't make sense. Forums and blog are different things.
WordPress is a script (software?), a blogging tool. In a broader sense: it is a CMS - content management system.

You install the script on your host (you can use a tool called Fantastico - look around in your cPanel!) and it will install it for you. Once installed, you can start blogging right away.

      Istvan,

What I mean by wordpress is similar to BBs is that they are pre-made platforms that can be uploaded to a cpanel using a host like host gator. Do I have the wrong idea?

Also, I'm getting confused by phrases like "Host it yourself". That to me means I need another computer (server to host my site(s)) and buy expensive firewalls etc to prevent ddos attacks and other black hat methods people use to hack sites. If I am hosting it myself, does that mean hosting through an online hosting company (like host gator) or does it mean actually having the set up and purchase a server/firewall etc?

Sorry to be nit picky, I just want to be clear

      Thanks,
      Pickoshe

Can anyone explain the difference between a Wordpress free blog (wordpress.org?) that is hosted on your own host with your own domain and wordpressdirect.com (also with own hosting and domain) which is what I used for 30 DC? I think I can only have 3 free blogs through wordpressdirect (I've quite liked that format, though) and need to put up two more sites.

Does the back end look the same as what I would be used to with WPD? With plugins etc.

Edit: Istvan - I think your suggestions will help me, also. Thanks

wordpress.org = the site from where you download the stand alone WP script to be installed on your own host (some hosts will offer to be done via a program called Fantastico: it installs the same script as you would download)

wordpress.com = the site which offers free hosted blogs. No commercial, affiliate etc. blogs allowed. A service much like blogger...

wpdirect - I am not really familiar with it but it seems like a commercial enterprise that makes money:
      - by referring you to a host through their affiliate link
      - offering services for lazy people

If you need their services, go ahead. On the other hand, you can install and change the theme on your WP blog as many times as you want; most themes are good for SEO, you can install zillion of plugins, exactly the ones you need not what others think you would need... you can add content to your blog or you can use some autoblogging gizmo if you don't want to write. So, what is it that you cannot do yourself, only through their services?

Thanks for the information. Regarding your last sentence, from what I can tell and know so far the answer is "nothing". As you say it seems very much like a service (perhaps to get noobs quickly through the setup stage of themes and plug-ins etc?) and was very much affiliated with the whole 30DC. As I was a total noob last September, I just went with what was suggested.

I am hosted with Hostgator and I've noticed Fantastico in cpanel so I will go for hosting a wordpress script through that. I'm sure I can handle it, now. Again, thanks for clearing up some of my confusion over the 3 different Wordpress's in my brain.

          LOL, make it 4...
there is also the wordpress MU (=multi user) - the script that allows you to set up many, many blogs in one place. It is used, actually, at the wordpress.com site, where all the new blogs are on a subdomain:
          something.wordpress.com
          example.wordpress.com
          etc.

It is also used by other (blogging) service providers, like edublogs, for example:
Edublogs - teacher and student blogs

That script is also downloadable for free and can be used on your own server.
WordPress MU › Blog Tool and Publishing Platform

Note. If everything goes by the plans, in the next big version of WP (v3) the two scripts will be merged!

Wordpress.org is the way to go. If you are limited financially, and want to go with a free blogging platform, then blogger is the best one. Other platforms have been mentioned, and they are all good. Just make sure you follow the TOS for each platform. Squidoo has a long list of forbidden topics. But that one and hubpages can be rewarding.

            @DPM70
I agree with Istvan about WPD. You can do everything from your cpanel. In fact, you will probably find out that you can do much more. As mentioned, if you want auto blogging plugins, those are available.

I played around with a trial of WPdirect and I agree that most people are much better off just getting hosting and setting up their own WordPress blogs.

"Your own host" generally means you have a hosting account with Hostgator, Bluehost, or some other hosting service and install your websites on their server.

If you have a domain it must be hosted by a hosting company to be visible on the internet.

There are thousands of hosting companies, a few were even mentioned above. You pay them a monthly/yearly fee for the "web space" they provide on their servers.

Whichever company you pick - that's your own host.

Hostgator, Linksky, TheBlogHotel, Bluehost... + just do a search for hosting, hosts, best host and similar keywords.

        Hope this helps.

No, Wordpress plugins do not work on Blogger. Blogger has its own ways of doing things, and some are very easy -- but Wordpress is the best way to go for all of the options that you have.

            From the blog post...

I decided to host an important video there over the weekend, and when I mailed it out to my subscribers, hostgator decided to shut it down.

The reason I was given by their support staff was that it was using up too much CPU power.

Blogspot.com : Owned by google. Chances of ranking high in search engines are little higher than wordpress.com. It's FREE.

Wordpress.com : No promotional content. Putting promotional content will get your blog removed. The site is great for content publishing, especially for backlinks (PR9). It's FREE.

Self-hosted wordpress blog : Arguably the best choice. Freedom of doing anything. Limitless plug ins to suit your needs. Amazingly quick indexing if the right keywords are used in the right way. A variety of templates. Good for creating blogs with reputation and brand in your niche. It's PAID (only for the domain and hosting, installation done from cPanel for FREE). It's THE BEST.

    Hope that helps.
